Drew Barrymore hated wearing 'cheese' on her arms in 'Grey Gardens'
Drew Barrymore, looking sleek in vintage-inspired Andrew Gn, talked at Thursday night's "Grey Gardens" premiere about having to wear a latex fat suit, including on her arms, to portray the reclusive eccentric socialite Edith "Little Edie" Bouvier Beale in "Grey Gardens."
Not surprisingly, having to transform into a 50-year-old recluse's body made her get back into working and staying in shape.
"When I got that cheese taken off my arms each night I was like, oh, thank god!! So good to know where it's headed! So I appreciate this time. I started weight training and roller jogging for 'Whip It' and then I got really in shape and I was like, oh, I better keep this up -- it makes me feel good.
"I do yoga, Pilates, weights -- sort of a combination. But I don't take it too far. I eat what I want. I enjoy. I exercise. I try and be healthy. I can't follow all this obsessive ... [behavior], sorry!" We had to edit out Drew's last word so please forgive the choppy ending.
But there were bigger challenges than fat suits in making "Grey Gardens" -- understanding Edie's culture, her mind, the time period, not to mention aging from a girl of 18 to a woman of 58, as Drew explains in the next video.

Drew Barrymore gave a
macificent performance in
Grey Gardens.
She deserves two Emmys.
Jessica Lange also gave a great performance but Drew Barrymore stole the movie.
Congratulations Drew.
Just watched the movie and I'm not a big Drew fan, but man did she do an amazing job with that one. Wow. Too bad it was only on HBO because that was oscar worthy.
Knowing the backstory already, I actually expected much more from this film. I thought Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore did wonderfully in their roles. Drew turned out a high caliber performance. Again tho, with the time it took to complete this film and the fact it was felt worth doing... I expected so much more than what we already know, far more depth. In that sense, I felt, why did HBO bother?
Edie's neice, I think, is marketing a limited edition of family pictures of the Beale sisters on her website only. Only 2000 autographed copies will be sold. I ordered mine immediately having been a fan of the original documentaries from the 1970s by the Maysle brothers. I suspect it will become immensely colletible.
I thought Drew was absolutely the worst part of HBO's Grey Gardens. She is a horrible actress, and trys WAY too hard all the time in every role. Yuck.
Both Barrymore and Lange had award worthy performances.
I loved the documentaries, and the Broadway show. This was, in some ways, even better. Congrats to all involved.
Drew Barrymore has been my favorite actress my whole life, and after seeing Grey Gardens tonight, i truly see why. She is stunning! And Jessica Lang is remarkable! They moved me to tears more than once. This film is extraordinarily spectacular and these actresses deserve Oscar gold!!! A true artistic smash indeed! Women today in hollywood have a lot to live up to, after these two women have done what they've done. Everyone should see this film! It has made me appreciate my life more. Congrats from your biggest fan in Denver!
Drew finally was given a part that showed her true grit as a "Barrymore"! What a delight to see REAL acting courtesy of Ms. Barrymore, Ms. Lange and the rest of the ensemble. Thank you.
Wake up Hollywood-Jennifer Aniston
is not an actress.
I do not understand why it was necessary to "indicate" that Drew had used foul language by saying: "We had to edit out Drew's last word so please forgive the choppy ending."
First, why are you telling us this? Second, the next time you do this, just write:
"I can't follow all this obsessive ... [behavior], sorry!"
Can't we ascertain on our own what she said? Besides, which, who cares? I find it fascinating that the author of this article actually thought people cared enough about what this actress said that she had to ask our forgiveness for "sloppy editing."
Just write the story, put in your ellipses, and we'll get the message. Really. We will.
I hope the new movie brings some attention to the original Grey Gardens documentary by the Maysle brothers (1975). If you want a Real picture of these 2 women, see this truly excellent film
