Obamas' new puppy is related to the Kennedy dogs. Cool or creepy?
Happy Easter, Sasha and Malia Obama!
Next Tuesday, the First Pooch will take its first official walk around the White House grounds and sniff out its new turf, maybe get to know some security guards and FBI agents. Oh, and Sasha and Malia too
According to TMZ, the 6-month-old puppy is coming from a prominent Texas kennel, thanks to Sen. Ted Kennedy's family.
The black male pup was sold to someone who gave it back to the breeder, as commonly happens with reputable breeders. It is usually part of a breeder contract that if the owner cannot keep the dog, it must be returned to the breeder for a new home.
The kennel is now "re-homing" the dog to the Obamas. Not a bad gig if you can get it!
But the Kennedy connection is interesting. And somewhat provocative. The kennel has sold three Portuguese Water Dogs to the Kennedy clan over the years, all from the same lineage.
That means that dog the Obamas are getting is from the same line as the Kennedy dogs. Isn't that interesting? In a way, it's kinda cool.
But in another way, it feels kinda calculated. Or are we being paranoid?
The Kennedy family will be presenting the new dog to the Obamas, but according to TMZ, it's really coming from the kennel.
The fact that the pup is being re-homed makes it kind of a rescue, doesn't it?

What a huge disapointment that the Obama's didn't bother trying to find a dog from a shelter, as they said they would. President Obama, aren't the shelter dogs good enough for you? While thousands of innocent dogs continue to die, Obama let's us down. There are portugese water dogs in shelters. Adopting a returned breeders dog is the same as coming from a breeder.
It is NOT a rescue dog. If this transpires, he is breaking his promise and putting politics before doing what is right. He will make himself look like a typical Washington insider rather than a force for change. It will be a big mistake.
Why in the world is this creepy? Ted Kennedy probably told the Obamas how much they love PWD's. Then Ted gave them info about their long time breeder and the Obamas liked what they saw. Obviously the families are close. Seems kinda simple to me.

Getting a dog from a reputable breeder is exactly the right thing to do, and sets the best example. If every breeder took back the dogs that didn't work out in their new homes, there would be no shelter dogs.
The Obamas can't get a shelter dog. The President made it clear at the outset that while he liked the idea of a shelter dog, they needed one whose breeding they could count on so they could be sure it was one of the hypoallergenic breeds, and most shelter dogs don't have a clear ancestry. How would it look if they got a shelter dog supposed to be, say, a poodle, and then had to return it after a few months because it turned out to have a coat like a collies and his daughter couldn't be in the same room with it?
Leanne - Your comments are very naive.
There will always be shelter dogs, and getting a dog from a shelter is the right thing to do and sets the best example. It's the difference between saving a life and treating a dog as a commodity similar to a new flat-screen TV or iPod. I guess we now know which camp the Obamas fall into. Very, very disappointing.
I hope they enjoy their new blueblood Kennedy pup while mixed breed dogs (and purebreds) are being killed in shelters.
I applaud the Obama's for their choice. A purebred dog gives the best odds of knowing personality and physical characteristics. I would also like to respond to a prior post. The vast majority of shelter dogs are not purebred; they are mixed breeds. Further, many shelters are now importing dogs from other locations.
Bravo for Obamas getting the dog they want. Getting a non or minimal shedding dog with the personality/characteristics/temperament they want from a shelter is a crap shoot. Ya see any PWD's in your local shetter? Didn't think so! Dogs are not and should not be political statements.
I can't believe they didn't adopt and save a dog from a shelter. It would've set such a good example and given a homeless dog a good life.
