Nadya Suleman spawns fertility clinic regulation! About time

Nadyaradarmug Nadya Suleman may have done one good thing by giving birth to 14 IVF babies.

She may have spawned new laws to stop other women from ending up in the same situation.

One month after Suleman, a single, unemployed  mom on food stamps from Whittier, Calif., gave birth to eight premature IVF babies, a California lawmaker has introduced a bill that will regulate California's fertility clinics.

According to People, Sen. Gloria Negrete McLeod says fertility clinics operate largely without state supervision. She says the clinic used by Suleman implanted six embryos even though Nadya already had six other IVF children. It's been reported that one of the implanted embryos subsequently divided, producing twins.

"It is alarming that the State of California has no one watching out for patients," said McLeod, a Democrat from Chino.

The bill, which also introduces regulations for plastic surgery centers, was originally inspired by the November 2007 death of Donda West, Kanye West's mother, who died of heart disease following liposuction and breast reduction surgery.

About time!

What do you think? Should California pass laws that regulate fertility clinics? And plastic surgery centers?

Maybe this will stop more Nadya Suleman multiple births and more Nadya Suleman rubbery lip enhancements.

Would you vote for regulation?

This woman makes me "sick, sick, sick!!!" She is a pathological liar!!! Did anyone see the video "diary" she released on RadarOnline.com where she is jumping on a trampoline while holding 2 children? Um... wasn't she drawing "disability" payments for a back injury she incurred in 1999 up until last year? Has anyone seen the "growing up" pictures with children riding her like a pony?? What "injured" person who is drawing disability is able to do that? Can we say "Workers Compensation FRAUD!?"

And this is the pathological liar who said she is raising her children without government assistance. Um... food stamps, SSI (for your CHILD who has never paid a cent into the system), student loans, and disability payments for yourself are ALL government assistance programs.

How REALLY did she pay for the IVF procedures and plastic surgery (and don't even try to defend her here... that's SO obvious.. look at the pictures... drastic change starts after her 2nd child and her facial expressions every time she's asked about it screams "LIAR")??? Her mom says she did not contribute towards the mortgage, food, or any type of support for her children (other than toys). But let's see, she's received $50K+ in student loans (not all of that went to the school, I'd bet the majority went into her pocket for "living expenses"), $165K+ in "disability / workers comp payments," estimated $2400/mo. for her 3 "disabled" children (when was ADD determined to be a "disability"), $500/mo. for food stamps (which I'm curious how she qualified for that if she had $100K in "savings" from working all that overtime for babies when she was working [let's just say it... she's always been "able" to work]). Come on folks... the math doesn't add up here.... the woman is a LIAR!!!

I hope NO ONE is dumb enough to give this woman a DIME (or her irresponsible, enabling parents either for that matter). WILL SOMEONE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE FILE CONSERVATORSHIP PAPERS WITH THE PROBATE COURTS???? This would put an end to this money grubber's mad-dash for handouts!! It would place a court appointed Guardian Ad Litem in charge of any taxpayers money she receives, private contributions, or $$ she's earning through the tabloids by EXPLOITING her children. She is incapable, incompetent, and a danger to her children. She should NOT be allowed to profit from her irresponsibility and any $$ that her, her parents, or anyone else in that family is allowed to make off of selling their stories to the media should be placed in trust with the courts to provide for the innocent children who are a victim of this HISTRIONIC PERSONALITY DISORDER mother and her enabling family.

Okay, deep breath.... rant off!

First, lumping fertility clinics and plastic surgery centers together is idiotic. Surgery to look good vs. procedures to try to make a desperate, infertile woman a mother? Please.

Second, Suleman's case is about as far from a typical IVF case as can possibly be and should NOT be used as an example to pen legislation. The vast majority of IVF patients will never conceive 14 children. We'd be lucky to conceive just one. We don't need legislation getting in the way of choices we make in consultation with our doctors. We don't need another obstacle to getting pregnant.

A more sensible law would mandate infertility insurance coverage for every woman, as is the case in many first-world countries. That way, women wouldn't have to face the possibility of going bankrupt trying to pay for a single all-or-nothing cycle, in which they might be tempted to transfer more than a couple of embryos. Insurance would mean women could get two or three attempts at IVF, increasing their odds of success and reducing the chance of multiple births.

In some cases, such as poor egg quality, it may be sensible for a woman under 35 to transfer three embryos instead of two to give her a better chance at getting pregnant.

Any rumblings about limiting embryo transfers are really about backlash against Suleman and "welfare moms," as well as underhanded attempts to limit what women can do with their own bodies.

I'd like to see who is willing to take away a woman's chance at becoming a mother.

TRo, Hear! Hear! ... I'm burning out on this story, but at least someone is listening closely. This is a great bill, this should never happen again. And where is her doctor? Is he going to come out and speak?

I would definitely vote for the regulation. A single Mom with a good career should ONLY have 2 kids. The state should sue her for fraud: Worker's Compensation, Welfare and lying on TV for stating she's not on any government assistance. She didn't know food stamps was considered Government Assistance, YEAH RIGHT!!! The bank whoever leant her the student loans should start asking her to prepay it back. Her kids should be taken from her. She won't be a good role model to them. Her kids will just end up repeating her mistakes, if their mom was able to work the system, why can't they. Take the kids away from her. Give them the chance to have close to a normal life. They'll end up reuniting with each other as adults by the internet anyways.

Social Security disability automatically is granted to any baby with a birth weight under 2 Lb 10 oz so she just got 8 more kids on disability. They are kept on SS disability indefinately.

To frogmountain: Insurance should NOT cover infertility treatment or IVF.....it is not medically necessary to have a kid!!! If you WANT one so bad then pay for it out of pocket. This planet does not need more humans......not to mention the thousands of kids waiting to be adopted!

So. I have a question. If she doesn't have internet access (as she said in one of the Radaronline interviews) how is she managing her website and paypal donations? She also said in an earlier interview that she didn't own a television yet two televisions were seen in her home on the "house tour" video. Lie much Nadya?

So let me get this straight: A democratic lawmaker is proposing a law restricting a woman's right to choose, inserting the hand of government between a woman and her doctor? Talk about inconsistent......

Why anyone would be against regulating the number of embryos that can be implanted at one time is beyond me. Unless those persons who are against regulating it have the same hare-brained get rich quick scheme though processes that Nadya Suleman so obviously had-breed a litter of kids for income and all the freebies she could get so she would never have to work again.

Insurance should never cover an elective procedure like fertility treatments anymore than it covers elective treatments like cosmetic surgery. Our health insurance premiums are high enough. Why should everyone be forced to pay higher premiums because someone makes a medically unnecessary personal choice to get pregnant?

Sorry folks, but having no limits on the number of embryos inplanted at one time only encourages the Nadya Suleman's and Dr. Kamrava's of this world to continue to make irresponsible choices endangering both the lives of babies and expectant mothers.

If our bodies were intended by nature to carry large numbers of babies at one time, it would already be happening naturally without medical intervention.

This is not an infertility issue it's a moral one. Whether or not a woman chooses to pursue IVF is her RIGHT. Lumping it in as an "elective" is not fair to woman who are physically unable to become pregnant without ART. For them, infertility is a medical condition.

But regulation is needed for all ART proceedures. Statistics PROVE that IVF success rates do not improve after more than 3 embryos are transferred. Doctors need to remember that births of multiples put both mom and babies at incredible risk. Where is the sense in that risk?

So where was the conscience of this clinic? Of her doctor? And better yet, of Nadya herself? As a mother myself (through adoption) and an unsuccessful IVF veteran, there was NEVER a point where I was willing to negotiate the health of my potential child and my clinic agreed. Our maximum embryo transfer was 2 - period, end of story.

Regulation is needed, I agree. But tread lightly - for a country that prides itself on having rights and freedoms, such laws will need to be well thought out. But I do agree, the end result will hopefully result in no more babies being born to a situation such as this.
