Was Jimmy Fallon's 'Late Night' debut embarrassing?

Did anyone stay awake through the entire "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon" last night?

Personally, I fell asleep somewhere after Justin Timberlake, but I did get to see this "Space Train" skit with Robert De Niro, who was only there to plug his Tribeca Film Festival every few minutes.

Viewers' comments on the NBC website haven't exactly been effusive with praise. Some folks already miss Conan. One guy only liked the Roots musical news skit. Another comment compared the show's caliber to a high school production.

I thought the only funny moment was when Timberlake and Jimmy sang a few notes and showed a photo of them doing their classic Barry Gibb talk show "SNL" skit.

Everything else felt forced, amateurish and uncomfortable.

And what was up with that stupid Licking Something for $10 Bucks routine? Complete with a slo-mo replay?

But what did you think?

Should we give Jimmy a chance to get warmed up?

Or do you give him two months before he's off the air?

And is it too late to get Conan back?

Jimmy Fallon was HORRIBLE

I never liked him, I'll admit, but I really wanted to, and intently had an open mind, I liked the first minute or so with Conan.. Then it juts became aggravatingly unfunny. They had months, months to prepare and all they could come up with was some lame jokes and to have the audience lick things.. I started fast forwarding through it the second he starting singing with the roots, continued through the licking segmant, tried to watch deniro and then that was it. This show is lame. It will not last.

Because the show is taped "live" we need to give the show a couple of months to really gage where it can go. It's not like taped dramas or sit-coms, where writers, directors, and actors get second and third takes. So because of that, I think we need to let it run its course for a bit before we start seeing the real "Jimmy Fallon Live" at its potential.

Granted, there are going to be some kinks to work through, but that's to be expected isn't it? Perhaps some folks "catch on" more quickly under a live setting, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're going ot be better at it, consistently, a month down the road, after several showings.

Jimmy was a very poor cast member on SNL. He was always messing up his lines, screwing up the sketch, and laughing at the other members(which was funny the first couple of times, but became increasingly distracting and unprofessional) Last night was uncomfortable and made me nervous watching him. He does not have the same presence as the successful late night hosts, and I don't expect him to hold the position for long.

I think he will get better as time goes on. I believe he was just really nervous for it being his first show.

Remember Conan when he first started? (Well, I don't because I was 2... but anyways). What did you expect?! It's his FIRST SHOW! Can you really fairly compare him with those other guys who have been doing their shows for 10 or more years?

I admit, I don't really know why they picked him. He doesn't really have a... presence. But he's going to grow and evolve. Ten years from now, we'll probably look back at this first episode and laugh/cringe like we do with Conan's.

I think he did a really good job! It took Conan a few years before viewers caught on and he fully found his rythm and look how awesome he is now. We should give Jimmy the same chance.

Extremely awkward!

Conan was very original on his first day, check it out on youtube...classic. Fallon totally sucked ***.

the problem is fallon looks completely at home with this sub-standard fare he is serving up. even if he improves on his delivery he still wont be raising his standards. thats what makes conan such a consummate performer. he never hit a plateau. one look at fallon is all it takes to see that the guy settles for less, just like (gag) leno

Wow what a mess that was. I thought Jimmy Fallon was a comedian. I thought he stood up in front of a live audience and told jokes. I thought he performed live in front of millions every week on SNL. It is almost as if he was just doing a character from SNL. You know the one that competed with Haratio Sanz on who couldn't deliver a line without laughing. His 'cute and cuddly' personality is ok for Disney but not for taking over for Conan??? Where are all the funny people anymore? What does he have to be all nervous about? The check from NBC clears. Thats it. How does a man that knows what he is doing be nervous? NBC will leave him alone but I am saying he will tank. Badly. If he had any balls he would leave and try not to pull a Chevy Chase. What does Fallon do after Late NIght? He didn't leave himself an exit strategy. But lets not get into that.
