Watch Joaquin Phoenix's bizarro behavior on 'David Letterman'!

What was up with Joaquin Phoenix on David Letterman's show Wednesday night?

It's painful -- but painfully funny -- to watch a clearly uncomfortable Phoenix wriggling in his hot seat on Letterman's show.

Letterman starts off by grilling him about his beard, then asks, "Can you tell us about your days with the Unabomber?"

When Joaquin winces, Dave says, "It was just a little joke," adding that it's his hope that after taking some time off ("and I think you are taking some time off tonight") that Joaquin will reconsider and come back to acting.

Joaquin then asks about Dave's thumb, which he explains as a cuticle injury.

And when the audience titters about his hip-hop music career, Joaquin asks Dave, "What do you have them on? What do you gas them up with?"

Dave responds: "The kid in the front is drunk on warm Pepsi."

Oh, no, there's more.

When Joaquin says he would love to come on the show and do his music, Dave says, "You know, that seems unlikely."

When Dave ends the interview by saying, "Joaquin, I'm sorry you couldn't be here tonight," Joaquin perks up and says to the audience, "He's funny. He's a funny dude."

Not as funny as you are, Joaquin. Not as funny as you are.

this has got to be a really lame, painful PR stunt on Joaquin's part.

i cant imagine what would bring this on, but it sucks.

either that, or he needs to go to a nice "health resort" for a while...

C'mon Joaquin, you are one person who does not need to pull this crap out of your bag.

what is he on?

I would really like to know the combination of drugs (legal and illegal) that put him into such a coma during this show. What a joke.... Even in the clip they showed he looked just as messed up with same tendencies and the whole chewing gun deal. Figure it out man, your on the way down to a deep pit of drug abuse.

Its obvious that he is a talented actor. You cannot dispute his work in films like The Gladiator, ( he was stunning as the emperor Commodus. And he was superb in his portrayal of Johnny Cash.

It was simply a coincidence that I caught his appearance last night on Letterman. I don't watch the show that much anymore. He is either involved in a well created stunt to make a film/ documentary about an actor who pursues a career as a hip hop artist, or he is in a downward spiral of drug or alcohol abuse.

If it is actually the latter there must be many people in hollywood who can provide the support system needed to help Joaquin end his downward spiral.

If he isn't on drugs, then there may be a brain disorder. It's a shame because he really is a good actor. I don't think David Letterman was the least bit funny, either. He showed great disrespect, regardless of his guest's behavior.

O Joaquin é uma das razões da minha vida. O que ele quizer fazer eu apoio. Nada disso me importa. Queria ver qualquer um sendo rejeitado na escolha que fez. Estou com ele e pronto.Joaquin l love you -Brasil

he's ok.

Has anyone considered that he may just be serious about a change in lifestyle? I understand that drug abuse is possible. It's not like there hasn't ever been an actor with a coke problem, I know. But who are we to sit and judge a person we've never met? Sure, he's acting a bit strange, but how much have we seen of him outside of movies? Maybe he's just a unique dude.

this is obviously a comedy act of him! first i thought he's on drugs too, but the second time i saw it i realized he is acting. it's so obvious. whatever his reasons are, he is a great actor. people obviously believe him and his "bizarre" behavior!
