First Lady Michelle Obama's inaugural outfit by Cuban-born Isabel Toledo

A yellow dress by Cuban-born designer Isabel Toledo was chosen by First Lady Michelle Obama to wear on this historic Inauguration Day

Inaug_dish_kds4zpnc_400 "I wasn't surprised at all that she [Michelle] chose Isabel Toledo," Patricia Mears, deputy director of the Museum at New York City's Fashion Institute of Technology, tells Life & Style.  "Mrs. Obama is an unusual woman with great fashion instincts and innate style. And she has always supported lesser-known designers like Thakoon, Narciso Rodriguez and Isabel Toledo."

Michelle accessorized the dress with unusual green gloves from J. Crew and green shoes.

Necessary considerations for her inaugural outfit:

(A) It had to be warm. The upper part of the coat and the back of the sleeve are lined with a pashmina for extra warmth.

(B) Sophistication counts. The fabric and color are also very sophisticated with a layer of lace over wool. The color is called lemongrass.

(C) It's not a suit, unlike most of the other first ladies' outfits.  Mrs. Obama chose a sheath, a style that that skims and flatters the body.

First Daughters Sasha and Malia wore coats from J. Crew.

Ten-year-old Malia wore a double-breasted periwinkle coat with a blue-ribbon bow at the waist, and Sasha, 7, wore a pink coat, orange scarf and satin belt, a coral-colored dress peeking out at the hem.

What do you think of the first lady's first official fashion choice?

I thought the sheath dress and matching coat was very striking- but..... the shoes and gloves lookked so off basew color wise.

From the TV it looked like her gloves were Olive, her shoes- emerald green and the dress pale yellow green??? It is an odd color but pretty.

Verdict: Part she got right-

Accessories: Dump them!!

I was underwhelmed by her choice. It was both inappropriate for the magnitude of the event and unflattering to her skin color. The green gloves were jarring. I hope any comparisons between her and Jackie Kennedy end today. The former First Lady would roll over in her grave if she even thought there were similarities.

The dress color did not flatter her skin; the crocheted effect was too "spring-like" and the bejeweled collar was too "cocktail party". Nothing worked.

I would have dressed her in winter white and had her wear pearls.

The First Lady looked exquisite!!! The First Daughters were absolutely beautiful!

How come whem she dresses in designer clothes ot's cool and when Palin dress in designer clothes it's wrong. answer: liberal suck

YIKES!!! SO SCAREY!!! Is she a man?

The dress and gloves were great - I think TV may have distorted the color a bit -- the shoes, not so great. On the whole, she looked wonderful, and the girls did as well. The guys just put on a black suit and a nice tie, and they look superb, women have to work so much harder! Michelle is a lovely woman, and I am excited to have her as first lady -- she's already given J Crew a big boost, and whatever company's or designer's clothing she wears will benefit! Good for the economy!!

baaaaaad color. maybe tablecloth-like??????

Oh my God, it is so tasteless .

Poor choice. She outshone her husband. Not! Wrong choice for a noon-time event. Poor choice of color, it drowns her out. This lady will learn, they all do--even Hillary ended up with style!

Did not care for the jeweled neck of dress; agreed, too cocktail-ish.

She wore a cardigan at the luncheon. She will get praise/boo's whatever she does.
