Amy Adams, Anne Hathaway, Angelina Jolie: fashion's A-listers nominated for Golden Globes!
After last year's writers-struck faux Globes, where the most exciting fashion moment at the star-less reading of the winners was Mary Hart's red Oscar de la Renta frock, anything would be an improvement.
But I just came from the 2009 Golden Globes nomination announcements at the Beverly Hilton and things are already looking up.
Read Susan King's Globes nod story!
The movie nominee list guarantees that the Jan. 11 awards show (and parties, let's not forget the parties!) will be one for the fashion history books.
Given the list of fashion world darlings -- double nominee for "The Reader" and "Revolutionary Road" Kate Winslet, "Changeling's" Angelina Jolie, "When Rachel got Married's" Anne Hathaway, "I've Loved You So Long's" Kristen Scott Thomas, "Doubt's" Amy Adams, "Vicky Cristina Barcelona's" Penelope Cruz and "The Wrestler's" Marisa Tomei -- the Globes are going to be a very competitive red carpet.
It may even surpass the 2007 fashion parade. Who could forget Angelina's gray St. John's gown, Salma Hayek's Dior white satin sheet, Jessica Biel's Valentino gown that got Justin Timberlake's attention (and kept it!), freshly single Reese Witherspoon's tart lemon Nina Ricci frock and Cameron Diaz's heinous "Swan Lake" disaster

Will it equal the 2006 fashion highlights? Remember Charlize Theron's sheer, black Dior frock; Heath Ledger's and Michelle Williams' coordinated purple outfits and Reese Witherspoon's scandalous, worn-again vintage Chanel, which had been previously worn by Kirsten Dunst to a 2005 Globes party (ouch!). And we may never recover from Scarlett Johansson's aerodynamic crimson Valentino gown with cleavage so spectacular that it made E! carpet seer Isaac Mizrahi reach out and touch her bosom. On camera.

Scarlett may turn up again for "Vicky Cristina Barcelona," nominated for best motion picture comedy or musical. Her best-actress-nominated costar, British actress Rebecca Hall, who also appeared in "Frost/Nixon," definitely will.
Horrifingly, Cate Blanchett was not nominated for her lead role in "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," (Why? WHY!?) but she may turn up because the film is nominated for best motion picture drama. More Balenciaga, anyone?

Thankfully, Bruce Willis' daughter, Rumer Willis, who didn't get a chance to do her official Miss Golden Globes duty in 2008, will get to reprise her role in 2009. Bet she gets herself a fresher fashion statement too.
Did we mention that teenage trend-setter Miley Cyrus is nominated for her "Bolt" song?
The announcements of nominations for stylin' dudes Brad Pitt, Colin Farrell, Mickey Rourke, Javier Bardem, James Franco, Tom Cruise (which also means Katie Holmes), Robert Downey Jr. and Ralph Fiennes means that menswear will also be major.
Let's just hope these guys do something more exciting than (yawn) Armani or (snore) Tom Ford.
We're counting on "In Bruges" star Farrell and "Wrestler" nominee Rourke to give dapper Downey a run for his sartorial splendor.
Some style seers say that the 2009 awards season fashion scene may be scaled down because of the recession. I say, damn the recession, full fashion speed ahead. And bring out yer bling!
It's in hard times like these that we all need some fashion fantasy and fairy tales.
Who are you most looking forward to seeing on the Golden Globes carpet?
