David Letterman grills John McCain: 'I screwed up!'
Republican presidential candidate John McCain appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman last night, and had to face an inquisition about his recent last-minute cancellation.
McCain cancelled the Letterman appearance Sept. 24, claiming he had to fly back to Washington to help fix the economic crisis. Nice try. Actually, the candidate was later revealed to have been interviewing with Katie Couric. Last week, Letterman called McCain, "squirrely" for lying about rushing back to D.C., adding, "I just don't know that we can trust him."
Letterman immediately lit into McCain last night, asking him when he sat down, "Can you stay?" Then he asked, "What exactly happened? "
"I screwed up. What can I say? What can I say?" was the clearly uncomfortable candidate's reply.
Then Letterman mentioned VP candidate Sarah Palin's claims that Barack Obama "pals around with terrorists."
Letterman compared Obama's fundraiser friendship with former SDS founder Bill Ayers to McCain's friendship with Watergate dirty trickster G. Gordon Liddy, a convicted conspirator.
McCain admitted he knows Liddy but that Liddy had paid his debt to society for his crimes, adding that he was "not embarrassed to know Liddy" or his son.
Although McCain kept repeating that Obama "palled around" with Ayers, Letterman mocked this, saying that they only attended a fundraiser together, adding, "Obama was 8 and Ayers was 29 but they palled around?"
Did you watch the show? (If you missed it, check out the video above.) What do you think of the interview?
Did Letterman go too far? Or not far enough? Should he have brought out the waterboard?

Letterman should stick to entertaining like every other "entertainer" out there. His bias is a little too obvious. Stick to the funny stuff and leave the reporting and journalism to someone like O'Reilly.
He didnt go far enough, an eight year old has NO control over his surroundings. Its rediculous.
I personally think David Letterman is a jerk, so I am sure that he used his show to publically harrass John McCain because he can.Letterman doesn't want to hear the answers, so he talks over Sen. McCain. What an outrage!!!I wouldn't watch his show again, if it was the only show on the air.
Liddy paid his debt to society, but Liddy never killed or maimed anyone, either. Ayers is unrepented, and because of a screw up by prosecuters, never paid his debt. Shame on the school boards that allow him to teach, shame, shame, shame.
Redistribution of wealth platform by McCain is the same policy middle class had to endure for 8 years (socialist program for the rich) -- do we want to continue the redistribution of wealth to CEOs, oil companies, the wealthy under McCain? Under Bush we had redistribution of wealth from the top down putting more money in the pockets of the wealthy and less money in the pockets of middle class -- it didn't work then and it won't work for McCain. We have the current economic crisis as proof that eight more years of McCain's Top Down Redistribution of wealth policy doesn't work. If that is the type of administration you want (which I'm sure the wealthy do), than vote McCain.
What a 1 sided post this.
ESNEAD, did you step outside for a smoke during Letterman or did Obama pay you for this posting?
This is a sad posting by a very bitter person.
He went way too far with his interrogation of J. McCain. He is not a "White House Committee" who is supposed to ferrett out J. McCain's association with J.Gordon Liddy.
He is soooo out of line.
McCain CAN; he is one of the best we have. Letterman did a fine job just as did McCain.
I trust McCain to do the Job. McCain is our only hope.
Regretfully, Obama is a tool in the hand of radical Islamist, Communists and American haters. Vote McCain if you care about America.
Anyone who votes Obama is handing the rope to those who wish to hang America in no time given the chance.
This election is not about Republicans or Democrats but about the free world current vicious war against the Islamomaniacs et al. I am a registered democrats but with the capacity to discern between evil and good. The Democratic Party was hijacked and the Republican Party collapsed...McCain is wise. I pray that Americans would see the light and the truth.
Get real! McCain is the Man!
America Wake Up!
I think Letterman was right to voice his concerns and ask McCain the tough questions. Somebody has to ask these questions and clearly McCain was uncomfortable answering some fo them. McCain defeats his own argument when he says Obama doesn't have experience. Look at his own VP pick; its outraqgeous that a VP candidate has so little knowledge on issues that matter. Its just a shame, really.
I thought David did our Country a service by playfully shaming Senator McCain into a corner with respect to this less than ethical GOP campaign tactic of trying to suggest Senator Obama "pals around with Terrorists". As Senator Obama says, these campaign tactics say more about the candidate approving these than the subject of his attack. It's embarrassing for all of us in America.
