Pink Floyd's Richard Wright, 65, dies of cancer

Davidgilmourroger_watersnickmasonri

Pink Floyd founder Richard Wright died today at his home in England. He was 65.

A spokesman for the band confirmed that Wright had been battling cancer, the AP reports.

Wright met Pink Floyd members Roger Waters and Nick Mason at school and joined his friends' early band Sigma 6, which was to be the precursor to Pink Floyd.

Wright wrote and sang some of the band's most memorable songs, such as "The Great Gig in the Sky," and "Us and Them" on the 1973 album "The Dark Side of the Moon."

Wright left Pink Floyd in the early 1980s to form his own band. But he rejoined the band for its 1987 album "A Momentary Lapse of Reason."

What an incredibly sad thing. I've had over forty years of enjoyment from his music and frankly I'm grateful that I have been alive at the same time that Pink Floyd existed. I guess that's definitely it for the Floyd. There's no way the band could really continue without him and his brilliant vocal harmonies. Goodbye Rick and thanks.

devastating! some we lose to insanity, some we lose to drugs, but onerous cancer consumes another factor in our mindless pursuit of existence...

so sorry to hear this news. feel like a major part of my growing up has been taken away. my thoughts go out to his family and friends. shine on!

Better check your captions on the above photo, that's Waters, Syd Barret, Nick Mason and Richard Wright.

I am so sad right now! Pink Floyd is one of my favorite bands! RIP, Rick Wright!

But this one hurts.
