Timothy Shriver sez ban 'Tropic Thunder' but hasn't seen it?

Timothy Shriver, chairman of the Special Olympics, admits to NPR that he actually didn't see "Tropic Thunder."

But he's calling for a boycott of the Ben Stiller film -- the one he hasn't seen -- because its use of the word "retard" causes "suffering, injustice and exclusion."

"I don't feel any special need to see it myself," he says on NPR. In the interview for "All Things Considered," Shriver admits that he very much wanted to see it in the last 10 days, but that the studio wasn't able to arrange it with him.

But that's OK. He says he has seen several of the scenes in question that feature the dreaded R-word.

"I've seen enough of it on TV and on the Internet."

Really? That's like banning a book when you've only read a few chapters, isn't it?

Or is it?

What do you think?

Ironic, ain't it, that a film that sets out to satirize the film industry and its stereotypes and clichés, ends up being a film that uses and entertains the audience with these very same stereotypes and clichés. And best of all, the audience gets to congratulate itself for being in on the joke, all the while laughing at retard jokes.

I don't need Mr. Shriver to tell me to stay away from this movie. The commercials I've seen have already convinced me of that.

I'm fairly sure that every movie ever made offends some one or some group. Should we ban or boycott all movies?

RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD

OMG you just said the R word? tomk you are what is wrong with america. (dripping with sarcasm)

this seems like something we should get congress involved with. stat people, STAT!

Sounds like Shriver's campaign for a boycott has been slowed. Almost like it's been... hmm... what's that word?

You have got to be kidding me. I heard about the protests and the boycotts, but seriously guys, see the damned movie first.

Otherwise you just sound like you're full of BS.

There are more important things going on in the world than another outrageously wasteful million-dollar Hollywood movie that's here today and gone tomorrow. Anyone who really gives a @#% needs to recheck their priorities.

Hasn't seen it? What a maroon! It's a movie! If you think it will offend, don't go see it! Will retards be upset? No, they're retards!

tomk, that isn't irony. that's what satire is. you can't satirize something without showing it. since I haven't seen the film yet, I won't pass judgment on whether or not it works or is well done in this case.

But, for instance, the target of this satire is apparently such dreadful Oscar bait as 'I Am Sam.' what made me cringe about the scenes I saw from that, and what I mock about that film, was not the depiction of a handicapped person; it was the blatant arrogance and condescension of Sean Penn in the role. And that is at least the *intended* point of Tropic Thunder, which (to me) means these protests are missing the point rather completely and increase my interest in the film.
