Helen scolds rag-mag editors for emaciated models

Senior sex symbol Helen Mirren knows who to blame for the "horrifically thin" young models who starve themselves and set a dangerously skinny standard for young women.

Women. Specifically, women magazine editors.

"I blame my own sex vehemently on this," Mirren, 62, told the Sunday Telegraph. ''It is women who run the magazines and women who editorialize and women who make the decisions."

Hear that, Anna Wintour? Are you listening, Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Elle, etc.?

The Oscar-winning actress has done her share of provocative nude scenes in her career. But she swept the 2007 awards season for her completely clothed performance of a rather matronly Queen Elizabeth in "The Queen."

So what spurred her anti-magazine editor tirade? Seems she recently took her tall teenage niece, who was curious about modeling, to a few agencies.

"She is a slim, flat-bellied and normal girl. Every modeling agency told her she would have to lose weight and I felt so, so guilty, because she really didn't have to. When she got home I didn't want her to feel like that."

I love Helen Mirren! As far back as Excalibur, to Prime Suspect a few years back and now, more than ever. However, rather than take her niece down that route, why not have taken her to acting workshops in order for perhaps the Mirren effect to perpetuate? Helen Mirren has always been sexy, sultry, provocative in spite of not your standard good looks. I think emphasizing that and bringing that out in her niece would say more for the women of her family. Just a thought. Having modelled myself from a time when no matter what one ate, it burnt off thanks to youth - which, by the way, is an enormous (!) factor in how these girls today ARE thin... but no one's interested if there's no juice to that story... I digress. I'm fuller now at 40 and don't mind it at all. I don't take issue with thinness unless it's sickly, but I can tell the difference between a junkie and a kid who just still happens to be growing. And as far as fashion editors are concerned, they're aliens anyways : )

I knew there was a reason why I adored Helen. She is right on and I hope she speaks out more. I have never seen so many anorexic women than when I was watching the Emmy's. Felicity H and Terri H must have bets with each other on who can get skinnier. They look so unhealthy and it is a very unflattering look. We need more women like Helen to speak out.

Shame on the editors of this article! Instead of simply reporting Ms. Mirren's comments, you editorialized with the unflattering smaller picture of her taking a bite, and the smart alec caption in the photo credits. Fine that you have your opinion, but this is not the place for it.
