Forget gas: Chiffon shortage threatens!

There will probably be more fabulous gowns at the June 26 Black Entertainment Awards than at the last Oscars. And it's all Diana Ross's fault.

Monique_alber_4953728_600The legendary singer/fashion icon will recieve the Lifetime Achievement Award during the BET Awards televised at 8 p.m. (ET) on June 26.

In honor of "The Boss," host/comedienne Mo'Nique - author of "Skinny Women are Evil," plans to change clothes for each category during the show. And there are 15 categories so that's a lot of frocks. Frankly, given Mo' Nique's super-size, this stunt may cause a chiffon shortage that could impact the next Oscars.

Nominees for the BET Awards include Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Hudson, John Legend, Gnarls Barkley, Diddy, Jay-Z, Ludacris, Angela Bassett, Jamie Foxx, Will Smith, Forest Whitaker, Eddie Murphy, Kerry Washington, Tiger Woods, Serena Williams, Chandra Williams, and more.

Also, 50 Cent's new album "Curtis" will be released the day of the awards and fans will be able to vote online at bet.com to decide which song he sings on the show. Right now, you can also vote for the Viewers Choice Award on the site.

Photo Credits: Miss Ross still wows the crowd with stunning gowns at her recent concert in London. But is there enough Lycra in the universe for Mo' Nique's 15 BET frocks? You'll just have to check out the show to find out.

Diana Ross has achieved and sustained a remarkable career. The unique sound of what she has been able to put down on record, and this amazing ability to do so many types of music, is vastly under rated at this stage of the game for her. As much as I love the visual of Diana (the ebony goddess) perform, I think it makes her an easy target for critics, who forget that she has this tremendous catalogue of music that she has recorded and which remains as a musical treasure to the listener. Diana's sound is one that so many times embodies the voice of love.
More recognition should be bestowed on this talented musical icon, and I am appreciative she is receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award on BET.

This is well deserved and there should be more tributes and recognition for the talented woman. She is an international icon whose career spans five decades. This in an incrediable feat and the mere fact that she can still sell records and have a soldout concert tour in America and Europe says it all. I do beleive it is safe to say tha Diana opened the door for many of the young women in music she there were defiantely those before her. etal waters. lena horne doorthy dandridge, bessie smith... and she continued the legacy by succeeding in music, film ,televison, broadway and of course the world concert stage....and besides to looklkike she does and still be as glamorous and exciting is a testament within itself... take note . young ones....this is how it's done..there are very few REAL superstars and she is definately one of them... no matter what people think of her ..her international success speaks voulumes.....

Frankly, I do not understand the point of this article. If this was a tribute to Diana Ross, why mention Moniques size? I just think that was uncalled for and quite stupid to be honest. Both these women are talented and Monique should not be made fun of just because of her size.

It really is special to see Ms. Ross honored for her work. Thanks to BET for doing what the Kennedy Center Honors and Grammy Awards reps cannot bring themselves to do--give Diana Ross recognition or her work. I believe it is true that part of the reason she isn't held in such high esteem as she should among so-called "industry" people, is that they cannot get pass the "personna" issue with Diana Ross. Forget knowing who Ms. Ross is privately and focus on the music. There are many talented Diva's amongst us, but Dians Ross has transcended "titles"; she loves her work and it shows in her product, the music.

She is truly a national treasure, too bad the American public is so easily swaped to a particular mindset or she would be recognized as such, like Aretha Franklin whose talent is grand, but it doesn't mean better; just different, but certainly, Diana Ross has shown herself to be an artist and performer of rare form and well deserving of this BET honor.

Peace

BET does a service to the public by honoring "The Boss" with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Diana Ross deserves this, and so much more. She is one of the great African American pioneers, and I think that we really do forget a lot of the "firsts" that she accomplished. KUDOs to BET

All I have to say is Bravo...Bravo..Bravo BET. It is about time. Also, I think The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, should step-up to the plate and honor this very special entertainer as well. I have followed Miss Ross' career since I was about 12 years old. Yes, 5 decades. I listen to her music every chance I get. Even today, I marvell at how fresh and up to date her music is. How true to life the words to her music are. She is the consumated entertainer. Someone mentioned her unique voice. I think this is why her music is so fresh sounding....She is like no one else. Her voice is like on one elses....Yes, it is unique. It really makes you feel good, because it is the music of LOVE. Many have under-estimated her saying that her voice was weak, it doesn't have any range, she cannot hit the high notes, etc. etc. These are her detractors. One cannot say that this woman is not talented. You simply cannot stay on the international scene, without having talent, for as long as Miss Ross has. I have always believed that the test of anything is time. Miss Ross music has withstood this critical test. She is an indication of what hard work can do. If you remain true to your music/fan base,...You will survive.....Many of her detractors are always comparing her to other singers. She isn't as good as: Patti, Aretha, Whitney, Mariah..etc. The simple fact is this, she may not exhibit the range that these talent singer exhibit, but she is every bit as talented. Diana Ross does what she does best...She sings...Her music is clean, clear, warm and effective. It surely makes you feel good. In addition she does what her audience expects...When she appears on stage, she is there to entertain. Her fans expect her to change outfits...each outfit being more glamous than the last on....This is also why they come to see her. They are interested in what she is wearing. They come to see how an entertainer should entertain...should put on a show. Long live the Ultimate Diva...Long live Miss Diana Ross.

she is the epitome of every drag queen that ever walked the runway, and lil boys wanting to grow up to put on their mommies dresseses, luv ya girl

All I can say is... IT'S ABOUT TIME! And to think she's never been honored with a single Grammy Award. 18 Number 1 Hits, an Oscar nomination, a Golden Globe, a Tony, and an Emmy - YES. A Grammy Win of her own? - NO. It just turns my stomach when I think about the so-called talent that have received such an honor. I definitely have far more respect for the BET Awards now than ever before.
You go Miss Ross!!!!

Shouldn't it be the SUPREMES that are receiving this award? After all, it was the movie "Dreamgirls" that has inspired any recent interest in Diane as a result of her once being a member of this legendary trio. Also, it was her associarion with the SUPREMES that made her a legend and a household name. That association and Berry Gordy's determination to make her a solo star are what established her as "Diana" Ross and extended her career. I guess I have problems with the fact that, as a solo act, she is merely a knock-off of the original trio. Ironically, it is her legacy that is being celebrated instead of THE SUPREMES. I would rather see their legacy being celebrated with her solo career included as an extension. That's really the way it is despite the fact that Diane and her "solo act fans" aren't old enough to remember the impact and magic of The Supremes. Oh, well......The BET Awards are not that important. At least, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame had enough insight to induct the original SUPREMES as the legend. They were even very insistent that the brief "Diana Ross and The Supremes" period as well as Diane's subsequent solo career not be specifically celebrated. The legendary SUPREMES are immortalized forever as they should be. Diane's solo career should be included as a by- product of the SUPREMES' legend.
