Too many fans, too little time

Disney Studio's publicity department had a very full Monday morning, fielding questions about Saturday's "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" PR nightmare at Disneyland.

Disney's head of publicity Dennis Rice was busy making amends to disenchanted print, internet, radio and TV press who'd waited for five hours on the premiere red carpet and never got to interview the film's main star, Johnny Depp.

"I had a big fallout with the press and I'm prepared to deal with it today," Rice confirmed.

What Disney was simply not prepared for was the overwhelming number of fans who bought tickets to the park to see their favorite stars arrive for Saturday's premiere.

"We knew Johnny Depp had a huge fan base but we were simply not prepared for the number of fans who showed up," Rice admitted. "And for Johnny, it's all about the fans."
Johnnydepp_charb_9185037_600According to Disneyland sources, five thousand fans camped out Friday night outside the park in order to get in at 6:30 a.m. to stake out spots on the carpet so they could see – and possible shake hands with - the "Pirates" star.

"Unlike some stars, Johnny Depp is very appreciative of and loyal to his fans and he always makes time for them at his public appearances," says a Depp source. "They all know this and that's why they show up in droves. He started signing autographs for fans in the front of the park around 6:45 and spent two hours doing it. He didn't even do his first interview with ET until 8:45."

Unfortunately, his two hours of devotion to his fans up front left scant time for the countless others lining the carpet further inside the park. Or the patiently waiting reporters further down the line who were not told until after 9 p.m. that Depp would not have time to talk.

But the tremendous turn-out is proof that Depp's popularity with fans of all ages and both genders has now hit superstar status. And he didn't even have to jump on Oprah's couch to get up there.

And it turns out that Depp had an even fuller plate on Saturday than most people knew. He arrived at the park at noon with his family to do press photos on the updated Pirates of the Caribbean ride.

Then, according to inside sources, he spent several hours more on a "personal obligation" that Disney has refused to confirm or comment on in order to respect the actor's privacy.

But a Hollywood Bytes investigation has uncovered that Depp's time-consuming "obligation" was actually an unpublicized lengthy lunch/meeting with several children with life-threatening illnesses whose dream was to meet the actor. Depp's publicist Robin Baum's office confirmed the  report. Depp has worked with the Make-A-Wish Foundation since his days on the late 80's TV series "21 Jump Street."

Well, this totally defuses any annoyance about Depp's subsequent truncated time on the red carpet. Choosing to make seriously ill kids happy over inane pointless press interviews? Hard to argue with that.

Thank you for updating us on the situation. I thought you unfairly criticized Johnny in your previous article but am glad the read what the true story was.

Autograph Collector magazine didn't name Johnny top autograph signer again this year for nothing. With Johnny, it's all about the fan and he has said many times they are his employer. Who can help being crazy about a superstar with this philosophy? I'm just sorry I couldn't be there to make it 5,001 fans camping out all night.

I was at the premiere on Saturday. Me and my mom actually waited since 4 in the morning for the best spot on the red carpet. We waited 14 hours for the stars, but I believe it was all worth it. Johnny is the greatest guy. He signed autographs for everyone and let us take pictures of him. Orlando is my fave and the sight of him made cry, he came over to me and we took a picture together. Well it was a really long day and my point was the stars were all really appreciative. It was pretty awesome!!

Although I am on the other side of the world (Asia, that is), I just want to say Johnny Depp is a very down-to-earth actor who has his priorities right unlike other Hollywood stars. He is definitely my (& million others') superstar!

I begged my mom to take me to LA for the premere since we live only about 1hour away, by plane that is. But I went to my fav orlando site (www.theorlandobloomfiles.com) and got to watch the whole premere online. It was to cool. There is a woman and two guys hosting the event and she talks to alot of stars that were at the premere but were not in the film. And she also talks to Kyra Knightly , Johnny Depp and my favorite Orlando Bloom. Check it out.

I was not there because i live far away... But i am just so in Love with Johnny Depp. He is the most understanding person i have ever seen in my life. He trash all his interviews with the media for people less fortunate. He misses his interviews to stay with his beloved fans. I don't know man but this guy is the best ever! He was the best signer this year... and he should be voted the best one every year. No one can beat him, He loves his fans too much to take a second place at signing!! I LOVE JOHNNY DEPP!!!

Johnny Depp was so wonderful to our Make-A-Wish families! As Wish Grantors for one of the Wish Kids, we heard all about how generous and caring Mr. Depp was to all of them. He made such wonderful and unforgettable memories for them and their families, and that's what MAW is all about! Disney is also very generous to MAW and we can't thank either enough! Sorry to the press and other fans, but thanks to Johnny Depp and Disney, these Wishes were truly priceless!

johnny is a great actor. i like him so much i look all of his movies.. he is a great man
