'Lost': New Season 5 trailer breakdown
There's nothing I love more than catching sight of new Lost footage. It's just the bestest, y'all. Even when we're forced to watch said footage through an excruciating video featuring the sonic assault of The Fray. Good gravy. I didn't like the song that accompanies this footage the first time I heard it, and now that I've spent the better part of 3 hours poring over it, I'm pretty much ready to kick a kitten. I'm lost and insecure...just kill me! Just kill me!
Honestly, people, find yourself a better song to listen to while viewing. The clip is 2:50 long, so find something in your iTunes that fits that length and groove along that way. My personal options that fit this length? Tom Petty's "I'll Feel a Lot Lot Better," which is ironic, since the entire premise of Season 4 seems to be that NO ONE feels better with the Oceanic 6 gone. I also have Bob Dylan's "She Belongs to Me," which would be better suited for a montage from the episode "The Other Woman." There's also a lovely Nirvana song that lasts that long, albeit with an unprintable title. If you know your Nirvana, you know which one I'm talking about.
But this isn't a music blog: it's a Lost blog! And we're here to talk new footage. I discussed the original trailer here, and with one exception, I've omitted any discussion of existing footage below. If it aired in that trailer, or in any existing episode of the show, I've ignored it. For one thing, it's redundant. For another, it spares us all a few seconds of listening to that song. Win win!

0:24: Hurley solemnly prays in the house he bought for his mother with the lottery winnings. Looks like he's just been broken out of the mental ward by Sayid. Notice his mother's favorite icon, The Virgin Mary, located in the back.
0:25: New shot of Kate with Aaron, in what looks like Kate's kitchen. Who is she looking at? Jack? Probably not. Ben? Possibly. Mrs. Butterworth? We can only dream.
0:33: Shirtless Sawyer! This happens a lot in this clip. When the sky goes people, men with beards find themselves mysteriously without clothes. The lady fans of Lost say, "Thank you, frozen donkey wheel."
0:50: Close-up of what looks like Locke, opening his eye in shock. Traces of blood can be seen past his right eye. A victim of time travel, or something else?
0:51 – 0:53: Camera pans back on Locke, laying on the ground. The tall grass around him suggests that he's fallen into that spot. A shot later in the trailer seems to confirm this.
0:58: Juliet leads Charlotte and Miles through the jungle. Note her leadership position in this shot. Also note that these three people combined know quite a bit about the Island's mysterious nature.
0:59 – 1:00: An unseen man holds two things: a gun and a compass. That man? John Locke. Anyone remember where they've seen that compass before? The big question: to where does that compass point?
1:00 – 1:02: Daniel Faraday is trying to ensure that a man in a hazmat suit emerging from a metallic door doesn't shoot him. Unclear which hatch this is, as the logo is obscured by the open door. My best guess? It's the Swan Station, especially considering what pops up later in this promo. But wait, you say, the Swan exploded/imploded! It's no more! It's passed on! It's shuffled off its mortal coil! It's ceased to be! This...is an ex-hatch! All true...in our time. But where the Island-based people are, well, it's fully intact. Pre-Incident as well, I'll wager.
1:11: "Sayid! So nice to djhfgdhjjshd....dude, why are you choking me?" Why indeed, Sayid? Don't you know every girl's crazy 'bout a sharp dressed Shephard? Does Sayid blame Jack for Nadia's death? Or is this just Sayid's natural reaction now every time that he hears Jack has a plan?
1:32 – 1:35: Miles observes two men (red shirts, perhaps) in the near distance. He gets a puzzled look on his face, notices a landmine nearby, ducks, and holy moly, when you freezeframe is just right around 1:34, the black smoke that emits from the explosion looks awfully, awfully familiar. But right before that explosion: look close. See that? It's a logo for Ajira Airways. And wouldn't ya know, "Ajira" is Hindi for "island." And wouldn't ya know, there's already a website produced by ABC for Ajira Airlines. New ARG? The Sun/Widmore endeavor? Discuss!
1:36: Oh, hi there, fellas in what look like military outfits. Nice bows and arrows you're brandishing there. Why don't you have guns, like good army guys that set landmines? Oh wait, you're not really army guys? But maybe Hostiles, loyal followers of technology-hating Jacob, looking to defend the Island from outsiders? That attacked and killed the initial military folk that helped terraform the Island for Dharma Initiative use? Just maybe?
1:37: Hey, look, it's "Call of Duty: Craphole Island!"
1:42: Just wanna point out that gun in Juliet's hand looks a LOT like the one at 1:37. Not sure what to make of that, though I'd wager Julie disarmed the previous owner before assuming she'd turn on Charlotte and Faraday. (Unless it's a triple-cross, and...oh look, my brains' leaking out of my ears again. Damn you, Lost.)
1:44: Locke, in the rain, brandishing a knife. Eventually you'll learn no good comes from that knife, John. Nothing good at all.
1:51: It's good to know that not only humans, but Virgin Mary statues filled with heroin, can travel back in time.
1:53 – 1:59: The POV suggests that Sayid's dead, but I'd sooner believe that Frogurt=Jacob before I believed he's dead. More likely, they're holed up at Hurley's house for the night, each taking shifts watching for intruders.
2:03: Sawyer, seriously, it's OK. People wore shirts in the 70's. I promise you.
2:04: Juliet digs up what looks like the same area Locke and Boone excavated back in Season 1: namely, the top of the Swan. The only other hatch I know that has an entry point underground is the Pearl, but compare this shot to this and see what you think. I assume this is happening while Faraday has a look up front, as show earlier in the trailer.
2:06 – 2:08: "No way, I totally just started leading the Others! Bad first impression!" One has to think that Season 5 involved shaking Locke's faith to the point that it will make Season 2 Locke look like a freakin' zealot by comparison. The image of the compass (a sign of Island leadership) drenched in Locke's blood is incredibly powerful.
2:09 – 2:13: Flaming arrow attack! Gotta think this is the first night after the donkey wheel incident, after a scene we see later in the promo (at 2:34) in which everyone stands around wondering why their beachfront property is no longer there at ALL. Also, is it wrong that I kinda love the shot of Sawyer grabbing Juliet's hand and helping her run to safety?
2:16 – 2:17: A torch-wielding Alpert approaches Locke. I can't tell if the initial shot is Locke looking through the jungle or from inside some type of bunker/hut. Maybe he's in ensconced inside the Others camp when the fit hits the shan that first night?
2:20: I prefer my Charlotte sans-bloody nose. It's just my personal preference. Also? I don't like it when people start bleeding from the nose on this show. Why? Exhibit A. Hopefully, she finds her constant on-Island, in the form of her birth parents. Otherwise, we're gonna have a super sad Faraday on our hands. Then again, remember the first time we ever saw Faraday off-Island? He's watching the wreckage of Oceanic 815 being discovered, and he's crying inconsolably. Is it possible that scene happens AFTER everything we'll see this year? Nothing's really impossible anymore. Except "Hurley beats Miles in the 400 yard dash." That ain't happenin'.
2:23: "I see John Locke falling from such great heights/Lay down, John/They'll say." Locke's a pretty outdoorsy type, so I'm guess he didn't fall so much as get pushed. Interesting how this happens in front of a banyan tree: throughout the show, those trees have been used as refuge from Smokey, polar bears, and exploding Arzts.
2:30: Hurley nearly drives off the road, sleep-deprived. That's a big car. Wonder if he's got something in the back. Say, an ex-Republican Guard torturer? (Also? Gotta love that the license plate is bookended by a 4 and 8.)
2:34: The aforementioned shot in which the remaining people on the Island realize their carefully erected mini-city is missing. Now, the Orchid video insisted that nothing inorganic go into the chamber when exploiting the dark matter to move objects through time. However, I'm not even going to try and explain how their clothing went back with them, but not their camp. If you go back to 2:12, you can see a flaming arrow shoot into what looks like a makeshift pillow, indicating they made do on their first day until finding themselves under attack. So I'll wager this is the first time we'll see the Lostaways in Season 5.
2:40: Jack, in the same outfit he wears while getting choked by Sayid, tells someone offscreen (most likely Ben), "Let's go get 'em." Amen, Jack. Amen.

Good recap of the video, but I agree: Lost and The Fray go together like asparagus and grape jelly on white bread. I'd have preferred the original version of Mad World sung by Tears For Fears back in 1980/81, but eh.
Lots of guns, I see. You'd think with all of Locke's knives, there'd be more blades, but noooooooo. (I collect blades, prefer them to bullet-laden stuff.) A scimitar battle between Sayid and Benjamin? I'd pay to watch that. :P

I think the thing that intrigues me the most is, are the Others and the Lostaways feuding again and if so, why hasn't Locke done anything to stop it? Or even can he? Or, are the Lostaways and Locke and the Others caught in the conflict between the Old Others and the Dharma Initiative?
I change my earlier viewpoint, I think that is the Swan that Faraday and Juliette are investigating. Perchance Hazmat suit man is Radzinsky?!
So, it seems Widmore's goons are still searching for the Oceanic 6 and especially Hurley (considering he's in the Jacob Likes Me club). What I don't get is why, since the Island has moved geographically and more-than-likely temporally, so even the 06 don't know where it is. Although since "they have to go back!", they may be the ONLY way to find it and Widmore probably knows this. Or else he doesn't, but still pursues them thinking they're the key...
Anyway, so many questions, January can't come soon enough.

- the closeup and zoome out of Locke laying in the grass is from the beginning of season 3.
- the rifle in the FPS view and the one Juliette is holding are two different guns. The FPS gun is a US M1 Carbine, whereas the one Juliette is holding is a US M1 Garand. Both are WWII-era rifles.
- Locke is in what appears to be Jacob's cabin, looking out of the cracked porch window at Richard coming towards him with a torch.
- I think Locke falling out of the tree is due to being shot while climbing it, not pushed.
- check out http://spoilerslost.blogspot.com/2008/11/little-new-footage-in-3rd-fray-teaser.html. There are a couple more teasing shots, most importantly a bright white flash that blinds everyone... Incident?!

Seeing Juliet apparently dig up the Swan brings even more questions. Obviously, they knew the Swan existed and where it was, but why leave Des by himself, especially with the whole Ben/Widmore connection?
Can't wait for January.

I was freaked out by the missing camp. To me, that confirms the time shift more than anything. Unless someone stole the camp while the rest of the survivors were playing ping-pong.
I'm not sure that Sayid was fighting with Jack. They showed Sayid fighting with some other dude in the first trailer, and I assumed they edited this one to make it look that way. I don't know why Sayid would be strangling Jack, especially since in the finale Jack said he didn't even know where Sayid was.
No Ryan, I said "Aww" when Sawyer grabbed Juliet's hand too. I guess they're BFFs now. I just hope the producers don't try to convince us that they're a couple now. I would believe that one about as much as Jack and Ana Lucia.
I guess Kate's new wardrobe for the entire season will be business casual.
Sappy song and lots of shirtless Sawyer...ABC you could have saved some advertising space and just aired subliminal messages during the actual Grey's Anatomy show telling people to watch Lost and accomplished your goal that way. Still, always happy for new footage.

Natalie | Nov 23, 2008 4:25:29 PM | #Because Yemi's plane is present on the island, I fear this season may take place post-Incident, which will be a shame. I say that because there is no way he departed in the late 70's, which is when the Incident occured.
Unless he left Africa in the 90's but crashed on the island in the 70's. But that hasn't been the case for anyone else (Desmond, Oceanic 815). Even the Freighter Doctor's body traveled forward in time, not backwards. Not sure how it is going to work, but I really want to see the Incident, so I hope I am wrong and there is a way to explain it.
Any thoughts are more than welcome.
The time travelling theory is totally confirmed in my mind after this. I think Other Sean is right, the Lostaways are caught in the middle of the Purge.
I think Sayid is choking Jack in front of Hurley, because Jack must have found out where they were and went to convince them to return. And maybe Sayid is KO'ed because Hurley hit him with the gun, to help Jack (because there's no way Jack won a fair fist fight with Sayid. I mean, the guy beat Keamy, who is maybe 6"9.).

As far as re-appearing Swans, I can readily accept that the Swan, Flame, etc. are back because the date is in the past. So, maybe 'moving the island' is another metaphor. The Island doesn't necessarily move as much as the people move. Or the people and some things. Or...maybe I'll just wait until January 21st, 2009.
Any new footage of Lost is worth whatever I have to do to watch it, but listening to that song pushes at the seams a bit. I need to remember for future viewings that once the song starts there isn't much Lost audio, and none that absolutely has to be heard. Also, I'm sure LostPedia has a transcript already.
I am seriously jonesing for new episodes. It's like the NFL. You have to wait like 7 months between seasons, but it's totally worth it. I'd like new episodes after 4 months like CSI or Survivor, but it's nice knowing that for the 16 or 17 weeks it airs, every week brings a new Lost. I can think of plenty of reasons Sayid is choking Jack (I was never able to pause the promo with pinpoint accuracy. Is it definitely Jack?), but I'd like to tell him that his efforts are futile. Jack can't die until he's done with his 'work'. Or maybe Sayid knows and is counting on that, so he can choke Jack out multiple times for screwing everyone over by leaving the Island.
James and Juliet looking a little friendlier makes a lot of sense. As far as they know, the helicopter and all hands aboard were probably on the frieghter when it exploded. They may think that Jack and crew are all dead. Oh well. Some will be answered in S5.
And to Thorny - Awesome 70's TV reference! I was a total freak for Land of the Lost, and I had nightmares about the Sleestaks when I was a kid. Land of the Lost isn't in Lost's league as far as quality, but it would be worth it to see Locke find a Pylon or have a scene between Sawyer and Chaka.

So I was at the movies this past weekend, and I saw this same season 3 trailer on the big screen and I just got so pumped. I'm not going to read too much into anything until we see what actually happens. We should know by now that trailers are full of things that are out of context.

I do not think that is Jack that Sayid is choking, the fight between Sayid and whoever that is has apurple shirt on...
What about that underwater person breaking the glass? What is that from?

What if that threw the (transporter?) out of wack and they are jumping around in time. This would explain why we see the old Dharma group, Yemmi's new looking plane, and the uncovering of the swan. The island traveled back but is jumping around in time so they are always at a different point. Ben did this so Widmore would never be able to find it.
