'Lost': It's all related

Damonlindelof_240 It's my firm belief that this blog, while pretty darn tootin' cool, is not the be all and end all of the online Lost universe. I know, I sometimes act that way, and sure, I had that limited edition of "Be All And End All of the Online Lost Universe" baby tees printed, but I blame that all on imbibing too much Dharma boxed wine. Point is this: I'm but one element of the overall body that is the Lost online world, and occasionally I look towards another organ, limb, or capillary in order to get some (non-spoilery) information about the Lost universe.

Now, this one hedges things a bit, as it revolves around a character returning to the scene. A character that I've harped on throughout my tenure here on the blog, but didn't know for sure if I'd ever see again. Well, thanks to Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello, I (and many of you) already know who this character is. If you don't want do know, for the love of Pete, do not click on this link, and do no keep reading. What follows is one tiny bit of casting spoiler action, followed by spoiler-free analysis by yours truly. But the analysis is based on the character in question, coupled with the bombshell dropped by Ausiello. So, you've been warned.

Really warned.

Super duper warned.

Warned 108 times.

Warned enough that hopefully there's no way you could inadvertently move your eyes to the botom of the screen and catch a glimpse of this super secret character.

Is the coast clear? Lord, I hope so. I can't keep this up much longer.

The character in question is none other than Ms. Hawking, jeweler to the unstuck, wearer of a most unusual brooch, and potential key to all things Island-related. The kicker isn't so much that she's coming back, which while cool isn't terribly surprising to learn. After all, we just saw an entire Island move somewhere in time; if anyone might have a clue as to its where/whenabouts, it would be her. But what's fascinating is that apparently she's RELATED, by blood, to a major character who doesn't want to read Our Mutual Friend as the last book of his/her life. Which naturally leads to the question: to whom is she related?

Put on your thinking caps, kids, as I take you through five possible options. Note that these predictions are made with yours truly armed with NO KNOWLEDGE of anything in Season 5, so help me God if you contradict one of my theories using insider information in the comments below. Actually, God help you, as this community loves to stay spoiler-free: you may take our screen names, but you'll never take our FREEDOM!

Here are my five best, off-the-cuff, first attempt, can-totally-claim-I-was-kidding-later guesses. Remember, Ausiello's source eliminated Desmond from contention, so he's out. I am also eliminating anyone related to other major characters on the show, since Ausiello only mentions one character in his scoop as related to her. So Jack, Claire, Penny, and Charles are out, least in my books. You could make a case for any of them, and I highly encourage you do to so if you feel strongly enough about one of those four.

Onto the list!

Ben Linus

The premise: Ms. Hawking sensed Ben's potential, much as Richard Alpert sensed Locke's. She helped cultivate a relationship between Ben's father and the Goodspeeds in order to place Ben on the Island.

The pros: They share the same creepy gene, that's for sure. Also provides a potential ally/adversary for Ben in Season 5.

The cons: Ben works better as a loner, and with his only faux family (Alex) stripped away, Ben is better suited without any emotional ties to compromise his mission.

Miles Straume

The premise: She's Pierre Chang's former wife, who managed to escape the Island pre-Purge.

The pros: Could help explain Miles' ability.

The cons: Doesn't explain why Miles seems to know why Charlotte feels she used to live on the Island, but he has no similar feelings. Walt has an uncanny ability that isn't due to be raised on the Island.

Daniel Faraday

The premise: Either his domineering mother/grandmother, who pushed him into the world of experimental science in order to take his place in the events to come.

The pros: Both know what it's like to experience the flow of time in unusual manners.

The cons: Daniel's fragile state when Oceanic 815 was discovered at the bottom of the Sunda Trench belies such stern preparation. Of course, the way this show's going, I wouldn't be surprised to see that scene be the final one of Season 5, as the show loops around itself.

Libby

The premise: She's Libby's mother, and sent her daughter on various missions on Charles Widmore's behalf.

The pros: Explains Libby's various interactions with Lostaways pre-crash. Also helps to explain Michael's vision in the hospital after his attempted suicide. And hey, we don't know her last name yet!

The cons: Ausiello said "major" character, and while Libby is iconic, she's not a top-tier character.

Charlotte Lewis

The premise: Similar to Miles' situation, with Ms. Hawking fleeing/leaving the Island with her child pre-Purge.

The pros: Connects Ms. Hawking to Charles Widmore in a potential fascinating way. (More below.)

The cons: According to Ben, her mother's name is Jeanette. Then again, John Locke turns into Jeremy Bentham, no?

As for that "fascinating" connection: what if Charles Widmore wasn't the only one from the Island's womb untimely ripped? What if there are a host of people (Widmore, Hawking, Abaddon, Brother Campbell) who exist in our world but no longer feel of our world? And what if this legion knew they couldn't simply saunter back to the Island, but instead painstakingly worked their way into various levels of society: raising funds, looking for signs, employing like-minded individuals...all in the name of returning to the Island? It's just the first kernel of this theory, but I wanted to toss it out there on the interwebs to see what sticks.

In any case: which of these five seem most likely to be related to Ms. Hawking? And what other candidates did I miss? Leave your characters and theories below!

Great googly moogly things are getting exciting around here. We're getting promos, casting updates, filming updates. It's like Christmas and birthday rolled into one. It's definitely wetting my appetite for more.

All 5 people listed are possible. I'd really like for it to be Farday or Libby, but have a feeling it will probably be Charlotte. They seemed to put some emphasis on her being Island-born.

However, I like how they have left us with not knowing Libby's last name. The re-introduction of Ms. Hawking as Libby's mother would be a great way for us to finally get a Libby flashback.

Whichever way this turns out, it is sure to make things rather exciting, to what already looks like an awesome Season 5.

I honestly have no idea. Of the five, here's the order I would put them in of most likely:

1. Charlotte (Maybe Jeanette is her daughter and Charlotte is her granddaughter? I'm not really sure how old Charlotte is supposed to be.)

2. Daniel Faraday

3. Libby (No idea why, it just sounds cool.)

4. Miles (But she seems to be able to see the future, whereas Miles seems to read minds.)

5. Ben (I'm putting him last, so obviously it'll be him, right? I don't know, I just think there's enough to learn about Ben right now as it is.)

I hate that it can't be anyone who's related to anyone else on the show. I thought maybe she could be Charles Widmore's sister who was working with him to make sure that Desmond went to the island. I always liked the idea that Widmore manipulated Desmond to go on that race knowing that it would lead him to the island. Which would lead Penny to go looking for him. Maybe there are certain people who do have the power to find the island, and Penny was one of them.

Wow, I just realized that that's ridiculous, and there's got to be a hundred reasons why it wouldn't work. Feel free to point them out. =)

oh, ryan. this is why i read this blog. LOOOOVE the Shakespeare. hope your turned around 3 times and spat after typing that...

i'm rooting for Daniel Faraday because i think Mrs. Hawking has a dark, twisted side, and i think she'd totally put her child on a path of self-destruction for the "greater good" or whatever.

Yeah, I'm leaning towards Charlotte because A) they're both British, B) they both apparently have a connection to the Island and to Widmore and c) the backstories for the Freighter Four (now Three) got pushed to Season 5 because of the strike, so the odds are in their favor.

Of course, it could be Faraday too, since he seems to be tripping the light fantastic across time and space now, and that's Ms. Hawking's playground.

ok, the British accent thing makes sense for Charlotte, but i'm a big fan of the underdog, so i'm still pulling for Daniel.

I'm definitely leaning towards Daniel.

It just seems to fit. So, in the world of Lost, makes me wrong.

When I saw that Libby was on the list, I thought maybe her too. Anything's possible.

Though I would love to see more Libby.

Ryan you missed one of the biggest playas in the relative-go-round, Jack!

Mayhap she's his granny. Perhaps as a young boy, he sat in her kitchen, stuffing his mouth (self-righteously of course!) with pancakes smothered in Mrs. Butterworth.

Can't Mrs. Hawking be related to Locke? She could have been the one who told him to get off the island, take the name Jeremy Bentham and finally how to find Jack. I didn't actually read the news, so I don't know all the premises.

It just occurred to me that Ausiello never said that it had to be a living character. Perhaps Charlie?

Guess Mr. Eko can be ruled out, eh? :)
