'Lost': Before we wrap up Season 2...
We're almost at the end of Stage 2 of the We Have to Go Back project. I know, wicked exciting and stuff. I'm sure your sleep habits have suffered as we've approached the return of Desmond Hume into the Lost universe. But if you'll indulge me briefly before the end of this leg of the journey, I'd be much obliged. But don't worry: it's not like I'm going to pull a Season 2 on you and post a rerun of an old entry. That would be straight up cruel of me.
I do, however, have two small requests, both of which are less painful than having blood samples drawn by Pickett.
The Facebook group. We're at 157 right now over at our Facebook group, and I'd like to push that up a tick. I'd love to have it around 200 by year's end, but that's a long-term goal. Right now, I'm aiming for 175. Not only does that feel like a manageable number, but it's also a product of The Numbers (108+42+15). Sure, 108 is merely the product of all six primary Numbers, but did you really want me to type all that out? Exactly. (Update: Yea, math's not my strong suit. But the goal remains the same.)
It's a fun group that can always use new blood. We have an active comment board and at least 2-3 extra discussion threads a week. If you're a high school or college-aged reader, you're already on FB 10 hours a day. If you're older, you need not feel like Chris Hanson's watching you. I encourage those already on the group to either leave some positive feedback about the group below or recruit some new members.
The podcast. Another season down, another podcast. That's right, the wife and I will be taking a look back at Season 2 this week, and rather than pose my own questions, I want yours! Leave any and all questions you want answered in the podcast below: just make sure they are Season 2-centric. They can certainly touch upon events before and after, but should have their roots in Season 2. I've spent the better part of the last two months rehashing the season: now it's your turn to let me know whatcha want, whatcha really really want.
If you haven't subscribed to my podcast, dear God, get on it! Go here, and either listen to individual podcasts or click the "Subscribe" button along the top right to always get the latest and greatest podcasts delivered to your computer.
Until next time, namaste, and...leave your questions and comments below!
Ryan also posts every 108 minutes over at Boob Tube Dude, then peruses Zap2It's Guide to Lost Facebook group. He also encourages you to leave questions for the producers and cast of Lost here.
As a member of the Facebook group since the first day, I can say it's a lot of fun. There's always something to talk about. We all try to keep everyone up-to-date with the latest news and information concerning LOST. The discussion board is full of all sorts of stuff. Believe it or not, we don't always just discuss LOST. The group's wall can be a great place to introduce yourself and get to know some of the other members. Give it a try. We don't bite (unless you ask us nicely).

As to the Facebook group, please join. It's one of the more active groups I am in but not as active as it could be. And there is an Introduction discussion topic that can let us know your comment name here compared to your Facebook name.
Blue Sean | Oct 13, 2008 6:42:33 AM | #I have been a member of the facebook group since there were maybe 5 people in it. I don't usually post there because I have no free time right now. But it's nice to see how many people joined the group (some of them never posting here on the blog, though).
As for my question, I'd like you Ryan, to explain as scientifically as possible what happened after Desmond turned the failsafe key at the end of the season.
sin laden | Oct 13, 2008 8:11:27 AM | #On the topic of Desmond from Season II, I would like to have some more insight on his voyage in his boat to escape the island. Also where did he park his boat for three years that the Others didn't take it?
Jacoby | Oct 13, 2008 11:24:51 AM | #Well, here's my question, and it relates not only to Season 2 of Lost but also to Season 2 and alot of Season 3 on Heroes:
"Do you think Lost experienced a similar sophomore slump, much like Heroes did in S2, where they had an overaching storyline/a game plan for the season and realized, through fan feedback and ratings that it just wasn't working? And that they then had to switch gears dramatically? If so, can you elaborate on some specific examples that showed the turning points of this within the season?"
Personally, I'm asking this because I've been watching Heroes this season and it's blatantly obvious that they were ill-prepared for Season 2 to have been cut short, and alot of Season 3 seems scattered because they're trying to create a new dish using the ingredients they alread took out of the fridge and laid out previously...
And I get the feeling that Lost in Season 2 did the same thing; they brought in the Tailies (among other story arcs), tried to go one direction with them, and found it wasn't working so they made drastic narrative changes. It also makes me wonder if some of the core elements of Lost were always part of a larger plan, or have the writers just been stumbling along all this time?
Other Sean | Oct 13, 2008 11:58:33 PM | #Short answer, Other Sean:
Yep.
Revenant | Oct 14, 2008 12:11:31 PM | #"Other Sean", my answer to the question you posed is that the creators' giant scope and ultimate ending to the show has always been in place, but when they were creating the show during Season 2 and Season 3 -- not knowing how long they were going to be on the air -- they had to find ways to stretch things out while slowly putting the major elements in place. I think the most telling comment came out when they signed the deal to lock in the three final seasons. Lindelof said setting the end date was liberating and they were no longer stalling. Now that they have X amount of episodes left, all the filler (for the most part) should be gone.
Bob | Oct 14, 2008 12:42:16 PM | #In no way was the Lost slip as bad as the Heroes slip. Season 2 of Heroes is horrifically awful. Not that Mohinder as the bastard child of Peter Parker and Jeff Goldblum is any better, but at least now I've adjusted my expectations.
Ryan | Oct 14, 2008 12:55:51 PM | #The fact that I am even considering joining Facebook (where I have never even visited) solely because of this blog is a testimony of how great you guys are.
Still wavering.....
Ryan, Love your comments in the forum and read them faithfully although I am often way behind. Still have a beef with your choice of formats for your podcasts. What ever format you are using just will not play on my Linux platform and that makes me very sad. I can watch Youtube videos, all the network videos, CNN, etc. Not sure what format you are using by would you consider mp3, Quicktime, or something more universally compatible? Or perhaps in season 6 will we discover that the true power behind the island belongs to Bill Gates and Microsoft?
