'Lost': Been there, done that
We all know what happened at the end of Season 4 of Lost. If you don't, dear Lord, why are you reading a Lost blog? That just doesn't make any sense. In any case, we saw what the Oceanic 6 saw: the Island "moving." That left us, like those aboard the chopper, plenty confused. Moreover, it left us wondering not only if/when we'd see those still on the Island again, but also if/when we'd learn some of the secrets still contained on the Island.
Take one Charlotte Lewis, for example. We learned quite the bombshell in the season finale: apparently, Charlotte believes that she was born on the Island. Pretty crazy stuff, and stuff that deserves further exploration in the episodes to come. But why wait until then? Already I can hear Charlotte being interrogated by Daniel (don't worry, the Island moved him and those aboard the Zodiac) and resident Island ghostbuster/sarcasm dispenser, Miles.
***
Miles: Well, look who finally decided to come back ashore.
Charlotte: Daniel, are you OK?
Daniel: Looks like 305 isn't going to work for us anymore. Stupid secondary protocol.
Miles: So, we're stuck here, right? Looks like Red here gets to finally check out her crib without Captain Wet Blanket running things around here.
Charlotte: Jack only did what he thought was best. I'm fine with still being here.
Daniel: Yea, about that, Char? That whole..."I was born on the Island" thing? You weren't...serious about that, right? I mean, that's pretty...weird.
Miles: Hey, Ellipsis Boy, those pauses get real old, real fast. Let's just let the lady explain herself.
Charlotte: What do you mean?
Miles: What DO I mean?
Charlotte: You've already said that. Get a new line.
Daniel: Guys, guys, look: the Island's moved, we probably don't have any way off this Island, and I just lost my constant. It's been a pretty rough day already. Let's just, you know, let Charlotte explain exactly what she meant.
Charlotte: Thank you, Daniel.
Daniel: I love you.
Charlotte: What?
Daniel: Did you hear something? I think it was the Smoke Monster. Definitely not me.
Charlotte: Well, I didn't definitely say I was born on this Island. I said, "Would it make any sense if I told you I was still looking for where I was born?" Which it didn't, because no one actually speaks anything but in the most oblique manner possible on this Island.
Miles: I've noticed that. I used to be able to construct clear, declarative sentences. But since I got here, something's...happened.
Daniel: What?
Miles: The Island won't let me answer. Anywho, Charlotte's talking.
Charlotte: Well, crazy thing is, I'm not sure I was literally born here, but I've felt a calling, if you will, for a long time. And it's led me all across the world, including Tunisia.
Daniel: What does...Tunisia...have to do with this Island?
Charlotte: That's just the thing: I don't know. But I knew, almost as if guided there, to go to Tunisia. I needed to go there, before I could come here. As if I had to go all the way around the world just to end up at the place at which I started.
Miles: Sounds like a lot of mumbo jumbo to me. Then again, I can talk to dead people and apparently read minds, so you might have a point there. Daniel, what on earth are you doing? Are you sketching Charlotte's face into your notebook?
Daniel: No, no, this is, um, this is an equation that just happened to look like her eyes. So let me get this straight: that Abaddon guy, he recruited you because you've already...been here before?
Charlotte: Maybe. I don't know for sure. It's not like I have a clear recollection of things. But at the same time, it feels familiar, you know? Almost as if I've experienced this in another lifetime.
Daniel: Scientifically speaking, that's impossible. Einstein said...
Miles: Forget what Einstein said, Braniac. Think Einstein's laws hold true here? You said it yourself: light scatters here funny. Things are DIFFERENT. I've been hearing the voice of some incredibly lame guy keep telling this equally lame chick that he's sorry he hid the diamonds. I don't even know what that MEANS, but I'm not ready to rule out Shirley MacLaine over here.
Charlotte: I mean, guys, look around. Think we're remotely the first ones here? Did you see that freaky statue from the files Widmore provided us? Think this is the first time this so-called "secondary protocol" has been used? Of course not. This is just one thin slice, one small chapter in the ongoing history of this Island.
Daniel: This is hotter than the laws of thermodynamics.
Miles: Gross. Put your pants back on, and listen up. She's just getting to the good part.
Charlotte: So what's to say that we're simply part of this one slice? What if there are several people part of several, if not all, slices? What if this iteration is in fact a repetition, an ongoing struggle in which balance is never truly achieved, using and reusing not only similar elements, but similar entities, over and over again?
Miles: So it's Groundhog Day with smoke monsters.
Charlotte: I'd go for The Dark Tower with moving cabins, but same principle, yes.
Daniel: I was watching some episodes of Battlestar: Galactica on my laptop while coming over on the Kahana, and Miles, stop acting like you're all surprised, you creepy mindreading ball of snark. Also? Thank God Netflix has no late fees. Anyways, several characters on the show, especially the Cylons, keep uttering the phrase, "All this has happened before and will happen again." Is that what's going on here? If so, are we just interchangeable numbers in a constant equation, always spitting out the wrong answer? I wish my constant were here to hold me.
Charlotte: Honestly, I don't know the answer. Maybe we're here to change things this time. Maybe the people that just left were the keys to changing it. But I can't help but feeling like this time...this time it'll be different.
Miles: You're not going to bring up tuklu orphans, are you? Because there's this blogger out there that keeps ranting about them, and I don't know what in the blippin' hell he's talking about.
Daniel: I'm an orphan...
Charlotte: Boys, boys, boys. Look, for now, we have to sit tight, wait for rescue, and hope John Locke doesn't screw things up too terribly in Jack's absence...
Miles: Wouldn't bet on it.
Charlotte: ...but I still think something's in the air, something different, that called me back to be right here, right now, to help affect the change that's been perhaps centuries in the making. What do you think, Daniel? Daniel? Where did Daniel go?
Miles: He's off carving "DF+CL=4 EVA!" into that tree over there. Should I get him?
Charlotte: No, that's quite alright.

sin laden | Jun 4, 2008 6:22:22 PM | #So, if this viscious circle has been happening for centuries and centuries (perhaps since the dawn of man), what is its end-game? If its balance the Island needs, what will it accomplish? Is this perhaps a test for all of mankind? Once the Island achieves this balance, what's next for everyone involved? Do they all go back to living their mundane lives?
My point is (and may be pointed out by them playing Risk in New Otherton) maybe the Island is the key to the world. Maybe there is more symbolism to Adam & Eve then we first thought. Perhaps once the balance is fully achieved on the Island, it causes the entire world to reset.
I am probably way off, but I was just trying to figure out how they can possibly end the show in the course it is currently in.
Shaggysteve | Jun 4, 2008 6:57:18 PM | #S.Steve-
the end game is: there is no end game. so it's The Groundhog Tower. they will end at the beginning, possibly with the next iterations of Jack, Locke, Ben, etc.
mri | Jun 4, 2008 7:11:17 PM | #Oh, I don't know...eventually, the FDW (Frozen Donkey Wheel) is going to do what all machinery does and break down, thus rendering the hamster wheel that is The Island null and void. Would seriously suck, though, if that happened while the FDW was half-way through its rotation...then whatever version of Jack exists at that point would probably be standing on some other bridge, yelling to that version of Kate, "We have to go baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa...." ad infinitum. Wonder how long Jack can hold his breath? :P
Dark Disciple | Jun 4, 2008 7:21:17 PM | #Hee-hee-hee...broke the page again. :O
Dark Disciple | Jun 4, 2008 7:21:49 PM | #Ha, I was reading this script (by the way, how did you already get an advanced copy??) and was wondering why the whole page was white...
I really want to know how Charlotte fits into the island and am leaning toward her to being an original Dharma member. Could she have born on the island a la Aaron, and if so, who is her mother. Also, by the way that scene plays out, it looks like the island will still have its Jack/Kate/Sawyer love triangle next season.
The Tunisia connection may turn out to be very important. When Ben gets teleported, he tells the hotel clerk that he has a standing account there. If Ben has been there so many times, what makes Tunisia so vital. I doubt that he moves the island everytime he wants a desert vacation, so what is he studying there or checking up on?
A-Rob | Jun 4, 2008 8:24:27 PM | #A-Rob, I said the same thing on a previous post of Ryan's about the Tunisia connection. I believe that Tunisia is the other side of the wormhole to the Island, or rather the place where all of the energy from the Orchid's secret tunnel teleports whomever it sends to. I hope that Darlton touches on this in the first few episodes.
Mark O. Estes | Jun 4, 2008 10:51:46 PM | #Really? Don't waste our time just cause it's summer!
Ugh!
this is stupid | Jun 5, 2008 12:28:48 AM | #Maybe Miles replaces Locke as island leader since he has psyhic powers and he can tell the difference between not christian and Jacob. He could sort out the living from the dead since he recognized Claire as a DWCB (Dead woman carrying a baabee). He has not seen Alpert yet and he probably failed the test by grabbing something expensive instead of the book of laws.
Harry | Jun 5, 2008 6:41:10 AM | #Yea, I don't get how Ben and Mr. Friendly, Ethan, Richard....etc. can come and go from the island so easily but, it takes an ancient frozen donkey wheel to move the island. Why can't Ben come back this time? He's obviously been off the island enough times to create aliases in the real world. Richard went to see John, Tom went to see Michael so, where do they teleport to? Do they all end up in Tunisia and have to travel to get to their destination in (oh, say NY or Portland)?
Chris | Jun 5, 2008 7:04:29 AM | #Also, I've said this before on the Zap2it forums about Charlotte; what if she was the last successful conception that lead to an actual birth on the island?
Who are her parents? Were they Dharma or did they preceed Dharma? She could be a Hanso or a Widmore or the daughter of some Workman. Hey, maybe Ben's drunk dad had an on-island affair!!!! Nah, that would be too soapoperaesque.
"this is stupid", please, tell me you're being sarcastic. How can a blog posting right after the end of a season possibly waste your time? We've got nothing BUT time!
Jeff | Jun 5, 2008 7:11:18 AM | #Chris-
"General Lost-pital?" :-)
mri | Jun 5, 2008 8:04:46 AM | #Okay, so I don't quite know if this is the best place to bring out my theory, but since today's entry is about Charlotte, I might as well.
Ryan, you mentioned that the frozen donkey wheel was part of a ritual that the original civilization on the Island practiced. Maybe it was something akin to how some tribes send their elders out into the wild when they are ready to die. Only in this case, the elder is responsible for turning the wheel and never able to return to the Island.
So that got me thinking; what if Charlotte was one of these people? Granted, she's not an elder, but maybe something happened that led to her being chosen to leave or she did it without their consent. Or maybe she's just the reincarnation of an elder. And because of leaving, either consciously or unconsciously, she has been seeking a way to return to the Island for years, which is why she became an anthropologist and why she knew exactly what was up with that polar bear in Tunisia.
Now here's even more of a stretch; what if Charles Widmore was once an inhabitant of the Island too? Either he was an elder in that ancient civiliation and was forced to leave, but didn't want to, which is why he's tried so hard to return. Or, more realistically, what if Charles Widmore was part of the Dharma Initiative OR the original leader of the Others?
He said to Ben "everything you have you stole from me." If Charles was Dharma, maybe he helped Ben plan the Purge, but then Ben tricked him into turning the wheel, thus taking the Island away from him. If Charles was the original leader of the Others, then Ben could've still tricked him into turning the wheel, and then he "stole" the Others from him. Whatever the case, it's been strongly hinted at many times that Charles Widmore was once on the Island, long enough to get detailed info on it's geography and protocols.
Other Sean | Jun 5, 2008 11:21:06 AM | #Hey "this is stupid"-
I think it's great Ryan continues to give us things to think about over the summer. And all these thories about Charlotte are really interesting.
Just wanted to post this link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1E5TPafClzo
It's a clip of The Daily Show from the other night. There was a comic on who was supposed to be talking about the democratic primaries but he would not stop talking about Lost. Two words: Hillary Widmore. Enjoy!
Hmm...now the link's not working. Sorry. Anyway, the guy's name is Wyatt Cenac, so if you can find it, you should watch it.
Natalie | Jun 5, 2008 12:02:49 PM | #Okay, last post, I promise.
Here's the link to the clip on The Daily Show's website.

Natalie | Jun 5, 2008 12:07:11 PM | #Thx for the vote of confidence, Natalie! Come back tonight: I've got something else planned for y'all during this long break.
Other Sean: while you might be right about Charlotte and Widmore themselves having been on the Island before, I think we also need to get past thinking about these people as individuals as much as shells: just different looks for the same soul/lifeforce/consciousness that gets regenerated over and over again.
Ryan | Jun 5, 2008 12:58:17 PM | #I certainly think we see that "shell" application with notChristian. Others may be more subtle.
Totally off topic (of Charlotte): I saw an image of Sayid on Facebook with a reference to "pwnsauce." Totally made me think of Ryan's comment two months ago about "is being butterworthed the new version of pwnd?" to which I responded by stripping all the vowels out of butterworth and so on and so forth....
...all of which made me think of btrwrth being Lost's/Sayid's pwnsauce.
(And yes, I like using ellipses which means I like Faraday....)
And Ryan, I liked your tongue in cheek dialog in your write up. Nice to change it up every once in a while. Thanks for trying to keep things fresh. Although can you and the wife do some podcasts during the break so I can line up my drinking games...?
djc | Jun 5, 2008 1:23:36 PM | #btw, anyone else suffering shakes and other symptoms of withdrawal in anticipation (dread) of nothing to do tonight at 10pm?
djc | Jun 5, 2008 1:36:25 PM | #i plan on trying to be very far away from my TV at 10. which means i'll probably be under my bed with a book, a flashlight and a bottle or three of wine. :-)
Ryan - as always, both enlightening and entertaining: my favorite combination.
mri | Jun 5, 2008 1:55:01 PM | #Withdrawal? What withdrawal? *shivers* *drools* *btrwths self* :P
Dark Disciple | Jun 5, 2008 2:31:11 PM | #Shells?...Vessels?...I like it. It makes a lot of sense. Perhaps Miles was able to tap into Charlotte's past life, or something to that effect.
Being here on his blog (as well as forums I visit) really help with my LOST-addiction. Thank you all for helping me get my daily fix. There's enough to go around. We just need to stick together and we'll get through this.
Shaggysteve | Jun 5, 2008 2:50:06 PM | #I think Tunisia is possibly the only destination one can travel to from the Island — at least via whatever technology is at work. When Ben asks at the hotel what the date is, it's apparent there isn't a lot of certainty where in time one will end up. But in space, it may be only Tunisia. He has been a frequent visitor to this hotel possibly; but it's also possible that every traveler from the island has used the same alias when checking in. [Question; the hotel was in Tunisia, right? Or was that later when he was in Iraq looking for Sayid?]
I really think Charlotte is Widmore's daughter (other daughter?)--Penny's sister or half-sister similar to Claire and Jack's relationship. She just doesn't know it yet. Who's the mom in either case? Do we know who Penny's mom is?
Barb | Jun 5, 2008 2:54:00 PM | #If she is Penny's sister, Widmore must not be aware of it. I can't imagine him sending his daughter to the island, knowing that Kreamy was licensed to kill indiscriminately.
William Robinson | Jun 5, 2008 3:03:00 PM | #I'm not sure it's entirely limited to Tunisia, but rather Africa as a whole. Both Ben and the polar bear ended up in the desert, but remember that Yemi's plane also took off from Nigeria and ended up on the Island, assumed to be in the South Pacific, which is thousands of miles away from how far a small plane like that could travel. Also, the journal from the Black Rock was found with the remains of pirates on an island near Madagascar, itself an island off the eastern coast of Africa.
Other Sean | Jun 5, 2008 3:07:23 PM | #lots to ponder about ...
we know that the donkey wheel ben used, transported him into the future ... october 2005 ... but can this donkey wheel be used to go back to the past?
Erwin | Jun 5, 2008 5:35:22 PM | #Widmore might not be aware that Charlotte is his daughter if the mom kept it secret--much like Claire's mom did in the beginning.
Miles, Danielle, & Charlotte don't really appear to be working for Widmore at this point. They seem to be conducting experiments of their own so I don't think Kreamy really figures into that.
Barb | Jun 5, 2008 5:37:15 PM | #Ellipsis Boy. Hoot! One of the rejected powers for the Legion of Super-Heroes.
As I've developed...a tendency to...use ellipses myself, I'd better watch it.
Shaggysteve, my husband also thinks that Risk game was trying to tell us something, but he's focused on "Australia is key." Not so much in that the plane took off from Australia but that Australia is "home" to the Dreamtime. Not sure how that could be tied into all the current Dharma experimentation/donkey wheel manipulation.
meggins | Jun 6, 2008 7:51:57 AM | #I couldn't stop laughing at the script! Then I started to read the comments, and Shaggysteve almost killed me by saying "Maybe there is more symbolism to Adam & Eve then (sic) we first thought." IS IT POSSIBLE for anything to be MORE symbolic than postulated anywhere on this blog?? Methinks not. Maple syrup, people. I do love it here.
SoddenSeraphim | Jun 6, 2008 11:29:45 AM | #As a writer and English tutor has anyone ever heard of "misdirection" and "reversal?"
Aristotle used reversals in his plays to bring his audience to the brink of believing they had everything figured out and Bam! A character or event turns the entire plot around and reveals the catharsis that was always there...the audience just had to wait for the play to disclose its "truth."
Sound familiar?
The writers of LOST are obviously formally trained in fiction writing as I was expecting a large reversal aspect to the last episode of the season.
But like any good "formula" The writers have left a few cliff hangers and of course just enough plot and story to keep us panting for more.
I just hope that like "Twin Peaks" these writers have a bit of mercy and compassion for us ... the audience and NOT add misdirected misdirections. For example; the log lady in "Twin Peaks," she had nothing whatsoever to add to the clues in figuring out who killed Laura Palmer. The writers just tossed in a few characters and events to keep watchers off balance and guess as to who would murder such a sweet and "innocent" High School girl. If you don't know the ending to Twin Peaks...rent the Movie. It's horrible, tacky and in incredible poor taste. Borders on porn and depicts sexual toture to the point of causing Californians afraid to travel past Sacramento. Ha! Ha!
As far as LOST goes I think there is some misdirection. Info or flash backs that have no connection to the story whatsoever.
As far as the reincarnation theory...the writers wouldn't chose such a non universal theme as the Hindu belief in reincarnation.
The tribal suggestion has merit. The character who wooed Juliet to the Island was ageless as seen in the episode of John Lock as a boy having an interview with him but rejecting him...almost out of fear than incombatibility.
That may be a ligetimate clue.
How did Clair die?
Dark Smoke Monster?
Does anyone know?
I did like the reversal of Jack being Aaron's Uncle rather than just a could-be Dad.
This will probably give Jack the conscience to kidnap Aaron after Kate makes it clear that her and Aaron are NOT going back to that Island.
Then of course Kath will track Jack to get Aaron back. Anyone can see that story line coming.
However, John Lock dying NOT on the Island?
That was a surprise as well as a good cliff hanger.
But why bring a dead body back to the Island?
Oh not to change the subject, but does anyone remember when Ben & his people raided the camp on the beach and ended up with three hostages Sayide, Jin and Bernard?
Well, someone shot Tom.
And yet he shows up alive in another scene. Oops? or Not Oops?
To tired to think of much more, but I will definetly be back to check this blog.
It's very interesting, fun and helps me not feel so isolated as a LOST fan.
Bye for now.
Linda
