'Lost': Show me the way to go home

Via_domus_dialogue_scene I wanted to try and drop a review of the Lost video game Via Domus by the time you all started your work week, but the ending quite frankly gave me pause. Pause in a good way, mind you, but pause all the same. So rather than rush my review, I'm giving myself a bit more time to think about it.

Now, should you rush out and buy the game? Absolutely not. I can't recommend it, unless you already own a Playstation 3, XBOX 360, or appropriately souped up PC and get it as a loaner or a rental. I can't say I'm mad I played it, but were I not a professional Lost blogger, I'm not sure I could look you straight in the eye and say, "Aye, verily, it was well worth the $60." I mean, the game isn't always as awful as this, but I can't exactly herald it as a great game, either.

That being said...

The ending, if it's to be believed, sheds ENORMOUS light on what's going on in the show. Or, more accurately, calls everything into question. I didn't remotely expect the ending, and as such, I'm combing through the game in order to put it in proper context. After ridiculous gameplay, after shoddy controls, after the complete ignorance of crucial elements of continuity, the game threw an ending at me that may in fact relate to last week's incredible episode, "The Constant." So it merits further discussion. (If you want to be spoiled on this ending, check out my weekly podcast. And if you want to see the ending for yourself, go here. And yes, that's actually the voice they use for Locke. I can't rationally speak about it at this point.)

Speaking of "The Constant," I didn't want to say this in my recap, but three days have done nothing to dull my initial opinion: this was the third best episode ever aired. I'd rate it only below my Number 1 choice, "Through the Looking Glass," and my Number 2, "Walkabout." "The Constant" stands above everything else that's ever aired. I'm willing to duel with you over pistols rather than yield that point. Unless you're like, really good at dueling with pistols, in which case, my list is wicked negotiable and stuff.

But hey, that's only my opinion. So as I gather my thoughts on Via Domus and its relation to "The Constant," list your Top 3 Lost episodes of all time. If that proves too difficult, just list your favorite!

But Ryan, I read that Via Domus was not canon... Is this some other type of trick by Darlton? And yes "The Constant" is highly up there in the top three of my own (Exodus and Through The Looking Gl*** being my top two), I just wonder how they are going to follow up with this week's episode. I really can't wait...

Ya Ryan, I liked it too but something has been bugging the heck outta me. Maybe I missed something in that episode. You see, I want to put "The Constant" in with my favorite episodes of LOST, especially since it had such a Twilight Zone feel to it... but with all that Sayid's been through, the getting shot, the torturing, the getting tortured, the watching his new girl friend die blah blah blah... when he finally gets to make one phone call to the "real world" he doesn't call, say, 911... he says, ur right Des, lets call your girlfriend. I know that Desmond was very very aggressive with his desire to call his girlfriend but I am struggling with the ease of which Sayid allowed the one and only phone call to go to Penny. You see, Desmond (and we the viewers) knew how important it was that Desmond make contact with his constant but Sayid doesnt know any of this. Up until now, he has been the true pessimist. He believes and trusts virtually no one. He has shown such cunning instincts and has been such a pivotal player in making sure there is a back up plan to the back up plan. Does that sound like the kind of guy who would let the one and only phone call (for rescue) go to his buddy's fiance. I don't know, I might have to borrow a phrase from Randy Jackson, "it was just ahright for me Dawg. It was a little pitchy in places but it worked for me in the end". lol

By the way, great blog Ryan. I always look forward to reading it.

Mark O. Estes- You're right, the game is not canon. But the ending of the game was written (or suggested, I guess) by Damon Lindelof himself. This, at the very least, gives us a peek into how his mind works and maybe a hint to how he wants to end the actual show. Maybe.

I'm with Ryan on this one, don't buy the game, just rent it. I rented it on Friday night and had it beat by late Sa****ay night. Total playtime was maybe around 5 hours. Some of the fuze puzzles were actually pretty fun but everything else was more frustrating than anything.

I bought the Windows version ($30) but after waiting for the whole thing to load, I still have to update my video card. I like "point and click" games mostly (Myst, Syberia, etc.) so I don't own any other gaming system.

It will be at least a week until I'm able to get and install the new card (I figure I could probably use it anyway), so I am going to avoid this chat until then - and I am looking forward to seeing the end of the game.

My top three:

1. Through the Looking Gl***

2. The Constant

3. Pilot

Okay, can't resist:

"...I'm tired and I wanna go to bed, I had a little drink about an hour ago, and it went straight to my head!"

Here's to swimmin with bow-legged women!

Top three:

1. Walkabout

2. The Constant

3. Through the Looking Gl***

If anyone can find evidence, either way, of Darlton's view of the end of the game, please send them my way, as I'm working on an entry about that ending for later this week. So far, I'm finding nothing, but that obviously doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

So yall (yes I am country, in Knoxville, TN to be exact ;) ) are saying that the game has NO replay value whatsoever? I am sure this will drop down to 20 dollars quicker than the second Buffy video game did...
