'Lost': Juliet is so not the sun

Elizabethmitchell_lost_s3_240And this, folks, is why we don't trust the Others.

To misappropriate Shakespeare on that other famous Juliet, "Alack, there lies more peril in thine eye than twenty of their swords." I'm not really at all surprised that Juliet's presence in the crash survivors' camp on tonight's Lost is yet another scheme orchestrated by Ben, even if there's some possibility that she's playing both sides.

What I can't quite figure out is why the episode spent most of its time building her up as a sympathetic character, only to pull the rug out with that final flashback scene, right on top of Jack declaring Juliet "one of us" (the episode's title). I guess we're supposed to be leery of Juliet's motives too, but weren't we already?

Granted, Juliet sold her part pretty convincingly. The moral high ground card she played with Sayid and Sawyer as she was retrieving the supplies to help Claire worked particularly well, but I have to wonder how much of her narrative about Claire's abduction was really true. Do we, for instance, take her at her word that Ethan really was acting alone when he kidnapped Claire?

And why would Jack not call bull on her when she explained that she was having delayed withdrawal symptoms from Juliet's serum? It's been more than a month in show time since Claire gave birth, and likely about two months since she was abducted and tested. Wouldn't she have shown a symptom or two before now?

The flashbacks did at least answer for me how extensive the Others' connection to the outside world was prior to the hatch implosion: Mikhail had a full bank of monitors at the Hub with news feeds from the outside world, video uplink to Nestor Carbonell at Mittelos Bioscience and access to a whole bunch of databases -- hence, the detailed dossiers on all the survivors.

What Juliet saw on one of those monitors -- her cancer-free sister (courtesy of the mysterious Jacob, Ben tells us) and her healthy boy, Julian -- has got to be what's keeping Juliet tethered to Ben and the Others, even after she's repeatedly been denied permission to leave the island. I would presume, too, that there might be a veiled message in there that her sister can be gotten to if Juliet steps out of line.

I also have to believe that Jack might be in for some bad times, depending on what exactly Ben meant when he told Juliet he'd see her in a week. He put his fellow survivors' trust on the line, and that's not going to be good when the other shoe falls.

What do you think of Juliet now? And of tonight's Lost in general?

I'm not suprise that Ben was the one pulling the strings with Juliet (hey, did we really think that it was Juliet's idea to drag Kate into the jungle?). Way back during Juliet's trial, I had a su****ion that they might be setting things up for Jack to trust her under false cir***stances. I just hope this whole story is resolved this season. One of the top three Lost endings, all time. I cann't wait for the finale.

So thinking back about 6 episodes ago, to Juliet's trial ... was that all staged for Jack's benefit to get him to trust her? Or do only Juliet and Ben know that Juliet is a plant not exiled?

Great episode overall though. Looks to me like its gonna be Kate, Sawyer and Sayid on one side, Jack on the other, with Charlie and Hurley most likely torn because of their loyalty to Jack. FUN!

I find the whole thing very confusing. Just how many layers of the onion are there where Juliet is concerned?

But no matter how this is resolved, or what comes next, Juliet is a much more sympathetic character than she was before this episode. We know that Ben has her on a tether due to her sister, and we know that she really does badly want to leave the island.

My thought is that now, even though she is doing what Ben told her to, she doesn't want to; her sympathies are with the castaways... unless... isn't her lover from the flashback one of the islanders that the castaways killed?

So...will she turn on Ben given the chance? Or will things proceed predictably with her being a puppet to the Others til the end?

excellent episode...love all of them, but this one was especially good

I think that the plan was for Juliet to infiltrate the survivors, but when it is all said and done, she is going to see the type of person Jack is, and turn against Ben and the others...

Just a thought

Here's a big stretch of logic. Have Saiyid and Sawyer confront Juliet. Juliet is able to convince both of them that SHE is the only one who can perform a syrum injection?? It only takes one person to inject medicine. Why couldn't Sawyer give the medicine to Jack and Saiyid torture Juliet?

This was completely lame.

This was one of my favorite episodes of all time. The verbal smackdown that Juliet gave Sayid and Sawyer has to be one of the best Lost moments ever. Neither of them could say a word. It's amazing how they all act so self righteous and demand truth yet none of the losties (Jack, Sawyer, Kate, Sayid, Desmond, etc.) have told anyone else their own back stories.

I think Juliet is playing Ben, not Jack.

The episode was excellent. Right now I don't even know if I can like Juliet or hate her because her story has been fascinating. Her flashback told us so much information we needed to know and yet there is so much more mystery about her. I don't know if she will turn against Ben because I thought she had feelings for Jack but I am confused. That's why Juliet is one of my faves right now, she is beautiful, mysterious and at the same time she can be evil. I can't wait for the next episodes because they are going to rock. I think Sun will be the next victim because she is pregnant. Let's wait and see!

Loved last night's epsiode. Just a thought though. Maybe Jack has su****ions about JUliet and is playing her also. I've always trusted Jack and there was that interchange between Jack and Charlie about trusting him. I think Jack has the same su****ions about JUliet and is pulling her in to the security and safety of the group to form trust and to see why she is really there. Could be as anything is possible on this show!!!!
