A pregnant question on 'Lost'
Question for you, Lost fans: How much does a holy-crap final scene like the one we had Wednesday night make up for an otherwise fairly uninspired episode, like the one we had Wednesday night?
I'm half-inclined to go along with Hurley and be shocked at the final utterance of the Woman Who Fell to Earth (and good thing she finally got around to speaking English). Another part of me is thinking, "Oh, come on. Do you really want to write yourself into that corner too?"
But let's assume the Woman Who Fell to Earth (ABC tells me her name is Naomi) isn't delirious from her loss of blood and is actually speaking the truth. What does it mean? (And yeah, here it comes, so now would be a good time to click away if you haven't watched yet.)
What does it mean for our crash survivors if, as Naomi says, there weren't any survivors of Flight 815? Where did the people from the outside world find the plane? Where the hell is everyone then?
The purgatory theory is still out, both because the show's creators say so and because contact with the outside world is possible from the island. I suppose it could mean that our paralyzed man-healing, sperm count-boosting, pregnant woman-killing and one-eyed Russian-reviving island is in some sort of South Pacific version of the Bermuda Triangle, where weird stuff just happens, though that's not an overly satisfying explanation either.
I'd be curious to hear everyone else's thoughts on the subject, because I suppose I really should discuss the rest of the episode.
Yes, one-eyed Mikhail is still alive, even though he looked good and dead after Locke pushed him through the Running Man fence a few episodes back (he made an oblique reference to the island's healing powers, so maybe it's not just Locke). Conveniently, he happens upon the Desmond party and uses his Soviet army medical skills to help stabilize Naomi, then tries to steal her satellite phone before Desmond lets him go, because he gave Mikhail his word that we would.
I'm with Charlie here -- not much can be gained by letting Mikhail go. Killing the guy might have been a little harsh, given the help he provided, but couldn't they have at least lashed the guy to a tree or something?
The night's ostensible A-story involved Sun's pregnancy, with the primary information being that she did, in fact, conceive on the island, thanks to its magical sperm-boosting powers making Jin suddenly fertile. Ironic, that: The island apparently cures impotence but kills pregnant women.
The writers also managed to find a bit of new information in the Sun/Jin flashback, as we learned a little more about his upbringing, why he tried to hide it, and how he came under the direct employ of Sun's father (paying off the debt, unbeknownst to him, for his mother's hush money). With Sun carrying that much guilt already, to say nothing of her affair and her pre-flight plan to run from her husband, her relief at the baby being Jin's is that much sweeter for her.
And, no surprise here, Juliet's trip back into the medical station to "cover her tracks" was a way to leave information for Ben. The only question here is why the Others need "samples" from all the women in the survivors' camp.
Which brings us back around to that final scene. There's a lot to chew on there, and I'm sure it will be a conversation-starter.
So, let's start conversing: What did you think of tonight's Lost? Do you forgive a so-so episode that ends like that?

Someone so set up a fake crash site, maybe stole the real black box from the island. Widmore or Hanso or whoever's behind it all, they don't want people looking for the 815 survivors, so they set this up to make the rest of the world think they all died.
they were all drugged, taken off the plane, implanted with fake memories, and dropped onto the island with a different plane wreck.
Or, they're all Dharma clones who were waiting to be organ donors until they got loose (with fake implanted memories).
Or, walt's autistic and he dreamed the whole thing.
I completely agree. That's what I was thinking, it's some sort of set up/fake crash site to make people stop looking for these survivors.
If all the p***enger's on flight 815 are dead. Didn't Michael and Walt get sent back?? they would be proof to the outside world that there were survivor's. Or did Ben lie to them as well? It appears Ben has some payback coming...
DD... I think you need to pay a little more attention. Ben doesn't have payback coming. Locke wants Sawyer to kill his father, that's who he kidnapped. Also, Michael and Walt are not back in the real world. Ben said so after they left that they couldn't get back. They'll find their way back to the island before long. Great ending tonight though.
when did Ben say Michael and Walt cannot go back? Isn't he as he claims a man of his word? I thought the communications were down so the submarine cannot come back only?
I think helping Sun stay alive will be Juliet's ticket off the island as Ben told her the job was not finished yet as why she could not leave before.
It's entirely possible the wreckage (which as we know, all but the front section of the plane ended up in the ocean) washed up somewhere away from the island's sphere of influence. How it escaped it is up in the air (the purple sky event?), but it's not impossible. I doubt it'd be that mundane, given the fact we still don't know why the Others refuse to just ***ist the survivors in getting home.
My current second theory matches up with the parallel Earth notion so hot lately. The finale title, "Through the Looking Gl***" makes me notice how, much like sicknesses reverse themselves on the island, could the mystery virus actually come about to people who weren't sick to begin with? The place is like a mirror universe in that regard. Heck, look at relationships. If you're preexisting in your couplage (Rose/Bernard, Jin/Sun), you're safe. In fact, things go your way to get you back together. If you only hook up on the island (Hurley/Libby, Sayid/Shannon), one of you will die as a result. Hence why Kate's love triangle angle is actually KEEPING her alive, and why Charlie's romance with Claire has so often involved him nearly dying.
Actually I really liked this episode as a whole, it had a consistent and interesting back story, which is what we can only ask from the 5th or 6th sun/jin flashback and we were also able to see some good acting from Yunjin Kim. The story on the island was also captivating and hd a great end. Not that many questions were answered and some new ones poped up, but that's how Lost has always been from the beginning. In other words great episode.
Frank Rook brings up some interesting stuff about on island relationships. Additionally, I find it interesting how many of the characters have stories with their fathers, another father, or no father. Sun's story last night reminded me of how many of the other islanders have past father ties.
i liked the fact that people were asking questions, sun asked about the women and children of the island even though she got half answers. and hurley and charlie knew of patchy! which means the losties actually talked about their respective adventures for once, i loved the episode as a whole - two big shocks with patchy and the ending - did the woman who fell to earth say they found the bodies or just the plane, and they were no survivours?
