'Lost': Matters of the heart

Joshholloway_lost_240Wednesday's clue-heavy Lost offered up a lot to digest, with its tumors and submarines and other islands and possibly fake pacemakers. But here's what's sticking in my mind:

Sawyer was a snitch.

That's the biggest flashback revelation we've had in some time, and it took me somewhat aback. As Sawyer was working Javier for information, I was figuring that, at worst, he had some kind of under-the-table, 50-50 deal with the warden. But for a commuted sentence and a nest egg for his daughter, he sang to the feds about the location of his fellow convict's stolen cash.

We've pretty well always known that Sawyer's a guy with a deep relativist streak. But didn't you at least figure him for an honor-among-thieves kind of guy? And yet. And yet his ratting helped make a good life for a baby he'll never know, and, back in the present day, won't let Ben and Co. subject Kate to whatever it was that happened to him after that big needle jabbed into his chest.

I'm thinking Ben was telling the truth at the end of the episode, when he told Sawyer of his "pacemaker," "The only thing we put in you was doubt" (particularly since, during Jack's emergency surgery on Sun's shooting victim, the medical facility seemed rather under-equipped). Besides, the incision was in the wrong place. And it seemed like a pretty long road to travel just to drive home that Sawyer really was caged -- why not just threaten Kate? (Although, for pure, chilling eeevil, Ben's "We're not killers" line was hard to beat.)

Now, onto the other revelations in "Every Man for Himself":

There's another island. Probably the most important bit of information leading into the final two pre-hiatus episodes. Apparently the Dharma folks had a larger operation, geographically, than we previously thought, and it also explains (at least in part) why Ben was so interested in taking Desmond's boat. It appeared, from Sawyer's view in that final scene, that the area of the main island facing the Hydra station was pretty forbidding terrain, which could explain why no one's discovered it yet.

Ben has a tumor. And, as Jack says, he just happens to be a spinal surgeon. It seems clear that that's the reason why the Others abducted him -- although, this being Lost, I'm hesitant to say so with any certainty.

The Others have a submarine, explaining how the group that stormed Desmond's boat in "The Glass Ballerina" did so without Sayid detecting them.

Desmond built a lightning rod. Yeah, I got nothing here. Anyone else want to take a crack at what he was up to?

Juliet is a fertility doctor. Or so she says, anyway. She did seem to know enough to assist Jack in trying to save Colleen, so it's not farfetched to believe she has some medical training. And if she's telling the truth, does that mean she was the one overseeing the experiments on Claire when she was kidnapped?

So, fellow Losties, were you as surprised as me to see Sawyer snitching? And what of this other landmass? The floor is yours.

The lightning rod... Desmond obviously has some sort of fortune telling skills from the hatch exploding. He was able to see into the future about Locke's speech that he had yet to give. (last week)

This week it started with him trying to get Claire to move away from her home for a day. At the end when the lightning hit the rod it was pretty obvious to me that he built it to save Charlie and Claire from being struck (which would have happened had he not put the lightning rod in place.)

I remember a spoiler from earlier in the season saying that one of the hatch survivors would have a gift similar to that of someone on "Heroe's" The painter on that show is able to see the future, and with the past two episodes as proof, I'd say that Desmond's seeing the not to distant future.

As for Sawyer bein' a snitch, what's so suprising. He is a con man with deep seated problems.
He's a loner and doesn''t seem to have ever run with a gang.
No suprise to me.

Why was it important for Kate to say she loved Sawyer for the guy to stop beating him? Why did Sawyer believe her without a doubt? and Did Kate stay after climbing out of her cage be/c Sawyer said if you love me you'll go? That to me means she loves Jack.

I'm not so sure that the Hydra is on the other island. Is it possible the others could have taken Sawyer to the other island while he was drugged? And the station Jack is being kept in, I think it's underwater between the two islands.

Interesting thought about Jack being underwater. I never thought of that, but now that makes sense. Thanks Jason.

desmond didn't save them. desmond knew his rain experiment would work and wanted to fix their roof because it wouldn't hold the rain out.

I thought the episode was terrible and depressing. I was the #1 fan of this show in the first two seasons, but the writers are really starting to tick me off by not giving us ANY answers, just more questions. FRUSTRATING!!! I'm losing interest, and I never thought I'd say that.

There were so many answers in this episode, FINALLY. I don't know if this means the writers heard the complaining, or were just planning on resolving issues for a change. But finally. WE now know or think we know why the Others kidnap kids. Their fertility doctor has not worked out! Or they could not find a medical solution. We also now know why Jack was kidnapped. He's a spine doctor and Ben or some other Other who happens to be 40 has a tumor hat needs treatment and Julliette's skills are not sufficient to do so. A friend's clues blog is at LostExposed.com clues blog. If they really could get off the island, or islands, as Ben said two weeks ago,why not just go to a doctor on the mainland? That is a whole, or a clue that yet again Ben lies. Maybe he really can't get off the islands. He must get cable or sattelite though. Otherwise he would not have had a tape of the world series to show Jack.

I find it more interesting that Brother seems to be a pre-cog. I don't think he was worried about the rain. He originally asked Claire to move further down the beach for one day. I think the roof thing was a ruse to get her out of her shelter thus avoiding the whole fried-baby-and-mommy incident...

Sawyer a snitch? I never thought about it, but I can't say I'm surprised...

Oh and I also like the Jack's-in-an-underwater-station idea. It was sort of alluded to when he tried to escape...

The importance of Kate's saying she loved Sawyer was to speed up the experiment that is being conducted on them. Col's boyfriend hates the idea of Sawyer being there, blames the Losties for her death. He wants them gone. Kate and Sawyer are in the cages to be made to fall in love, to mate. The Others need/want children, Juliet was revealed to be a fertility doctor, etc. Everything done to Kate and Sawyer is there to allow and quicken their attraction. Col's boyfriend just wanted it over and done with.
