'Scrubs' Is Back Tonight with Courteney Cox & Keith Dudemeister

Zachbraff Last May when the Zach Braff-directed "My Princess" episode of Scrubs aired on NBC as the purported "series finale," more than a few fans were up in arms. Unable to enjoy the fairy tale fantasy for what it was, because they felt jilted out of proper endings for the Sacred Heart characters they had grown to love over the last eight years, there was much confusion.

Enter ABC. Swooping in in late Spring as Scrubs' Prince Charming (yes, in this scenario, NBC is the wicked step mother), network president Steve McPherson ordered an eighth season of the show, saving it from the aforementioned unceremonious cancellation. And having screened, spied and snuck scripts for several of this year's episodes, I can tell you that creator Bill Lawrence, his writers, cast and crew have not taken their 11th hour resurrection for granted. Reverting back to more of the heartfelt drama and believable comedy of earlier seasons, I think longtime fans will likely agree that this is one of the best seasons of Scrubs so far.

What can you expect from the first two episodes airing back-to-back tonight?  An introduction to a few of the new interns, whom you may have already gotten to know via abc.com's super webisodes (Ed, played by Aziz Ansari, seems to be a real Lost geek who may or may not spend his spare time trolling for ladies on Lost fan sites)... the welcoming of Sacred Heart's new Chief of Medicine, Dr. Maddox (Courteney Cox), who J.D. describes as "super friendly and soulless" (she and Jordan seem to bond over the whole soulless thing)... the firing of the Janitor... some truly quality chocolate bear/vanilla bear time (though it is kindly shared with A Different World & In Treatment's Glynn Turman who plays a dying patient)... and surprise, surprise, the return of Keith Dudemeister (Travis Schuldt), who seems to still be hurting over Elliot's last minute cancelation of their wedding (tear).

Yes, tear! You might cry tonight. But the blows will be cushioned by solid comedy. Scrubs is back.

Thanks for the scoop as always Korbi!

Especially the part about the Lost geek.

I wasn't planning on tuning in tonight, but I definitely will now.

Wait, does the addition of Courtney Cox mean that Dr. Kelso is gone?

James | Jan 6, 2009 3:50:22 AM | #

This seems like more of a TV Guide episode review.

EW has a more comprehensive review, including an actual interview with Bill Lawrence. Check it out over there.

WOO HOO!! Scrubs is back!!

Thanks Korbi!!

Dr. Kelso is alive, well and busy eating muffins for life in the cafeteria...

Seems too bad they took for granted their time on NBC. The last couple of seasons were really kind of out there.

It was soooo good!! The second episode was amazing and they did what Scrubs does best...made me laugh outloud and had me crying softly at the end! Kudos!!

ABC ruined the show. It was not funny at all. The 2nd episode was way soapy, typical ABC. Barley laughed, they ruined a show by keeping it around. It should have ended last year. Thanks ABC for ruining a good show just for extra sydication money. The show is going to bomb in the ratings, pulling According to Jim numbers...

RIP Scrubs what trash those episodes were

Yeoch! I actually liked these episodes, I mean it is better than yet another reality show, and scripts and actors trump game shows. SCRUBS is better than most CBS comedies (HIMYM excluded) or THE (let's dress up a procedural version #19) MENTALIST. It is better than ACCORDING TO JIM. So there are plenty worse things than some SCRUBS. I'm the guy that thinks January Jones is the weakest link on MAD MEN, so what do I know. Ha ha.

The joke about "Something looks different" when JD pointed at the ABC Logo was pure SCRUBS, the last little bit of the 1st episode laid it on a little thick though.
Second episode was better and I almost wish they could have aired that one first for new viewers, but we had to have the first episode to set up the season.

I have questions! The Janitor!! Please tell me he will be back?
How many episodes is Cox contracted for?

Kellek | Jan 6, 2009 10:07:44 PM | #

I liked both of them

mari | Jan 6, 2009 10:08:57 PM | #

Cox is contracted for 3 eps. And yes, the Janitor will be back!!

James - this blog's tagline is "scoops, spoilers & breaking news" not Full Articles by Korbi. Zap2it has a variety of other columns and let's face it, it has only recently in the past few years grown to be something besides a TV grid (and I'm still raw about them losing the old customizable format and show alerts). Korbi has put out two columns the past few days and is the most sincere and nicest of the TV Spoiler Queens. So you might take that into account before you get all snarky about her column.

Otherwise I guess Korbi should be flattered that she has grown past her building fanbase to include some opinionated looky-loos. Maybe you are plant from TV Guide, who knows.

People who didn't like tonight's episodes clearly aren't Scrubs fans because these episodes put the show back on track. We haven't seen episodes this good since season 3.

Jack | Jan 6, 2009 10:19:27 PM | #

Sorry James - I meant Jason. I also meant EW.

SayWhat | Jan 6, 2009 10:21:37 PM | #

Yeah no problem SayWhat. I agree with what you said as well.

I especially like that korbi responds to questions in the comments. Glad that Kelso is still around!

James | Jan 7, 2009 1:45:38 AM | #

I thought both episodes, but most especially the 2nd were awesome. It's like the Scrubs of old and I was impressed!

Jack: What? shut it, dude. I am a HUGE "Scrubs" fan from the era when it was actually a good show -- think early 2000s! I haven't watched the second episode yet, because the first was so disappointing. But the Dr. Cox/J.D. convo was pretty funny.

aev | Jan 7, 2009 1:44:07 PM | #

Kelleck I agree with you about Scrubs and January Jones! ;)

Kath (canakaty) | Jan 7, 2009 4:26:45 PM | #

SayWhat, thanks for saying so... very kind :)

korbi_ghosh | Jan 7, 2009 8:13:23 PM | #

Courtney Cox will probably give Scrubs a big PR boost, and she's pretty funny as well

I thought the two episodes were lacking the really sharp and quick-witted dialogue between characters, and rehashed things like "The Steak Dance" but it was totally lame, unlike spontaneous dance bits in earlier seasons. I wonder if it'll run a full season? I doubt it, I won't be watching, SCRUBS reruns seen 10x still entertain me more than these two new episodes.
