Jorgegarcia The wait is finally over, my friends. Lost returns tonight with a two-hour premiere that will turn the Island on its head. When you realize what happened as a result of Ben moving the old Isle, I do suspect you'll be a bit blown away ...but I won't say anymore on that subject, as I don't want to ruin the "whaaa--?!" for you. What I will say is that the Oceanic 6 are pretty much where we left them last Spring and our pal Hugo "Hurley" Reyes is no exception. I had the chance to talk to the guy behind Hurley, Mr. Jorge Garcia, who was nice enough to b.s. with me on what we've already seen and what's to come in season 5...

With the Oceanic 6 off the Island and Sawyer and company left behind, do you think the two groups will be separated for most of the season?
This season does appear to be a long ride towards returning to the Island. That's what Ben's telling Jack we have to do. As to how we tell that story, with the jumps in time, I mean you may not know how certain things happen, but we may know that things have already happened or will certainly happen. For example, we ended season three with the Oceanic 6 off the Island. But we started season 4 not knowing how they got there. And then in season 4, we find out, we ended season 4 finally knowing. And I think there might be a lot to that, in a way. There's a lot of jumping around. That stuff is starting to come to a head in what we're shooting now.

What episode are you on right now?
We're a little over halfway through. And so far, that's the goal, getting back [to the Island]. And it's all about the logistics of it.

Ha, the whole thing is a bit confusing, isn't it?
Yeah. This year especially. [The season premiere] script was the craziest one. I would read stuff and I was like, hold on a second, let me read that again. There [is] definitely some really crazy stuff happening in this episode. It's huge.

So last year on the Island, Hurley seemed to become more comfortable in his own skin. He was willing to stand up for what he believed in a little more, making the decision to go with Locke instead of Jack. And even with Locke, he drew limits as to what he was willing to do. Now in season 5, Hurley's situation is obviously different, being off the Island, but will he continue to speak his mind and make his own decisions?
Great question. Definitely. I can think of some examples as I'm going through what I've shot so far and there are definitely moments where Hurley is still standing up for what he believes in. He doesn't always get what he wants now, but he's definitely trying to stick with where his personal moral grounds are and stuff like that.

But he's not necessarily getting what he wants?
There are certain things he might be opposed to that he kind of has to go with the group on. But early in the season, he certainly has his input and say.

So the group may not be taking him seriously? Does that have anything to do with his perceived mental state?
It does seem to be in his way with certain people. We've already seen with Jack, that what [Hurley] tells him, it doesn't seem like he attaches as much weight to it as before. And I would say all of this is based on his history of being in Santa Rosa...

Can you give an example of him not getting his way?
Remember last season on the boat when Hurley and Sayid are up above and they're looking down saying, why are we doing this? Why are we keeping up a lie? You can see where [Hurley]'s not happy with it, but [has to accept that] this is how we're going to do it and this is how it's going to be. And then there's the scene where Jack comes to visit him to see if he's going to tell the truth and fess up to what they've been trying to hide.

Since we're on the subject of last season, remember when Hurley went to visit Sun and he said that it was--

Good that no one else was there?

Yeah. Is there a reason that he's not seemingly upset with Sun, but he's upset with the others?
I don't really have too much more information than you do on that. I mean, remember there was also an episode where we all went to Jack's dad's memorial and we knew Sun wasn't coming? There's definitely a strong falling out with Sun and the rest of them, but it's mostly focused on Jack, I think. If I was going to guess, I'm pretty sure it stems from Jin being left on the boat and the boat exploding and not being able to go back. And then she had that whole thing where she went and found Widmore, that's still something that has to be played out.

And I know we're going to learn pretty early on exactly why Sun went to Widmore, but do you know at this point why Hurley was the only one who went to see her when the baby was born?
No. Not explicitly. It wasn't clear-cut that this is exactly why Hurley went and why so-and-so couldn't go. Although I think it sews together as the season goes on, why it wasn't as easy for other people to go.

Okay, on to Sayid. At the end of last season, when we saw him breaking Hurley out of the hospital, he said he would take Hurley somewhere safe. Do you think Hurley trusts Sayid? I know that he does learn about Sayid's connection to Ben not long after Sayid breaks him out...
I think Hurley does trust Sayid. The episode [tonight] picks up right where last season left off, from the moment [Hurley] is sprung from the hospital and Sayid kills that guy in the parking lot. And [Hurley] definitely is sticking with Sayid in the beginning, staying in Sayid's dangerous world with guns and bad people.

I hear you're going through quite a few costume changes in the season's early episodes.
Yeah, I go through a great deal of wardrobe changes. More than I've ever done on the show, it seems like. Some more flattering than others. But there is definitely a bit of a costume craze at the start.

Any one that you particularly liked?
There is one I particularly liked, which I'm still waiting to see why I was in a particular outfit. We didn't expand on that. They like to leave blanks to be filled in later. And there's a moment where you see Hurley in one of my personal favorite costume pieces ever, but it's not clear how he got from that spot to that position. Does that make any sense?

Sort of.
We've got to talk in riddles, pretty much.

Well I'm assuming he is in these costumes because Sayid is trying to take him somewhere safe, or something like that, maybe you're hiding. That's what I'm guessing.
[Laughs] That's not a bad guess.

I have to ask you about Libby. People are still talking about the Hurley/Libby romance. Do you think we'll ever see the two of them interact again? He is talking to dead people, so it could go there, right?
I don't know. There is a hint [this season] that it's going to happen, but so far, nothing's shown up [in the scripts]. It hasn't occurred.

But we are going to see Hurley talking to more familiar dead faces this season.
Yeah. I'd say he's not through seeing dead people. Some familiar faces will definitely pop up...
