Sam & Ruby, Dean & Castiel & 7-Foot Teddy Bears: What's In Store on 'Supernatural'
Supernatural is on a tear this year. There's so much going on and yet, we need to know more, no? I set my girl Marisa Roffman up with writer/producer Sera Gamble, so we could get some answers...
Speaking of the premiere, Sam was in a bad place while Dean
was in Hell. Are we going to be seeing any flashbacks that deal with Sam’s life
while Dean was dead?
And how about Dean? He and Castiel seemed to almost have a
semi-bonding moment at the end of the last episode. Will that lead to Dean
being more open to what the angels have to say?
Lately, it seems like there have been a lot of television
shows adapted into movies. Do you think there's any chance of seeing Supernatural on the big
screen at some point?Anything else you want to share about upcoming episodes?
The episode we have coming up [tonight] is hilarious. Ben
Edlund wrote this episode where a wishing well starts to work. The important
information is that a girl’s teddy bear comes to life. There’s a seven-foot
teddy bear -- like a drunk, existentialist teddy bear -- wondering why he’s been
brought to life. It’s probably one of my favorite scenes I’ve ever seen,
period.
I'm very interested in finding out what Sam was up to. Something indicates he's had a hell of a time (and not in a good way either). I'm just wondering if we'll find out how Ruby came back, since Lilith indicated that she had been sent far, far away. We can only assume she meant Hell. So how did Ruby come back? Was that Sam's doing? And how exactly did he plan on opening the hell gate without the colt? Just a lot of fun questions we would love some answers for. Whatever the writers have planned, I'm there for the duration. This season rocks!
cathy1967 | Nov 6, 2008 7:51:04 AM | #Hello Sera , pop over to Buddy tv and see what 2 and 2 people are putting together over Sams/Rubys relationship?
I would thank you but not really much to thank you or the show for where Sam is concerned.
The 7ft teddy looks good though.
Thanks for the interview Korbi and Sera. Very well done. I'm interested in what Sam did as well, during the four months Dean was gone. I'm also interested in the Dean and Castiel relationship and how Sera mentioned that Dean won't submit easily, if at all, and that the angels will be working with Dean for a long time, maybe the rest of his life. That speaks volumes and thank you Sera and Kripke for adding such wonderful characters and such a fantastic storyline to the show. Castiel and Uriel are both awesome and I can't wait to see Castiel becoming Deanized. :D
smellynelly | Nov 6, 2008 8:08:41 AM | #Thanks for posting the interview. I always thought this show was great from the beginning, but this year it is by far the best thing on TV. As Dean would say, "Awesome".
Kathy B | Nov 6, 2008 8:10:32 AM | #By being cagey about Sam, what it's doing is pissing off a lot of viewers who see this turning into the Dean Show and aren't happy about the back seat that Sam seems to have been stuck in.
Deej1957 | Nov 6, 2008 8:15:14 AM | #Thanks for the great interview, Korbi! I'm loving Supernatural this season. Can't wait to find out what's been REALLY going on with Sam and Ruby.
Rod | Nov 6, 2008 8:30:11 AM | #I'm not interested in the Sam-Ruby relationship and I'm certainly not interested in the Dean and Castiel show. Please just focus on exploring the richness of the Sam and Dean bond.I'm tired of recurring characters taking time and focus away from Sam.
stephanie | Nov 6, 2008 8:48:30 AM | #Great interview, thank you! It sounds like there's a lot of exciting stuff coming up for the boys, and I'm absolutely astonished (in the best possible way) by how well the angel plot has been accomplished this season. Wow. This is a really great season so far, and it seems like the awesome is only going to continue. Keep up the great work, guys!
Ali | Nov 6, 2008 8:49:07 AM | #I find it hard to be excited about Sam's story here because it has Ruby in it. I really don't care what Ruby did or what her purpose is and I'm really afraid of where they are taking this. I don't understand why they just can't clear this whole Sam/Ruby mess up. I will be glad to find out about Dean's time in hell. And tonight's episode looks like it may be very funny.
Meg | Nov 6, 2008 9:27:02 AM | #Loved the interview, Korbi. I'm enjoying Supernatural this season, I love Dean and Sam being back together, I like Dean and Castiael as wel as the fact that the actress who played Kris on Wildfire now plays Ruby. I'm not so sure I like the upcoming apocolypse though and the whole Sam and Dean on oppisite sides part.
Also, I know this isn't Supernatural related, but *please* tell me we haven't seen the end of Carmalita on Dirty, Sexy, Money. She's one of my favourite characters!
I am glad to hear that we will be seeing and hearing more about Sam.
Show is doing a great job this season, but I've missed Sam and it will be nice to get some insight into him finally and to see what went on in those four months.
Great Job, Marisa! Good interview.
KJ | Nov 6, 2008 9:55:09 AM | #Thanks for the great interview. I love this bit, "Cas is being changed a little bit by Dean as well". I love the Dean and Castiel relationship.
Looking forward to seeing what happened to Sam. I can't stand Ruby though. I really hope nothing sexual happened between them otherwise that's gonna turn me right off. No way would I watch that.
Linda | Nov 6, 2008 10:13:09 AM | #Hoooooray! Sam's point of view at last. I've missed Sam so so much, so I'm really looking forward to those months without his brother.
Jenna | Nov 6, 2008 11:06:59 AM | #I love what they are doing this season even the Sam and Ruby stuff though I would have preferred if they had kept the same actress for Ruby as she had more of a screen presence. Bring back the old Ruby!
Daren | Nov 6, 2008 11:15:36 AM | #Well, I would like to say that this interview made me feel better about the lack of Sam this season, but it didn't. In fact the comment Sera made regarding the two-parter has made me very apprehensive. I am not really looking forward to another episode that is going to have fans arguing and more divided than they already are.
I am happy that the writers are enjoying exploring the rich chemistry and relationship between "Cas" and Dean, but I have to wonder, who is Sam supposed to have a similar dynamic with?
Sera Gamble has always seemed to me to be the one writer who has supported the character of Sam. I understand her desire not to spoil the surprises the show has planned for the character, but I just hope that the writing and story is good enough to redeem Sam in the eyes of many fans who have already written him off.
I will wait patiently for the promised Sam exploration in episodes 9 and 10, but I don't want to expect too much, especially since there are 2 new characters being introduced along with Dean revealing what happened while he was in hell. I've also read the spoilers for the episode following the two parter, and it seems to me the focus returns right back to Dean.
I really hope I am worrying for nothing and that Sera and the show will prove me wrong.
MaryW | Nov 6, 2008 11:50:00 AM | #While I am happy Sam gets some focas and I have been hopeing to see what is up with him, just because some of the focas is shifting to Sam does not mean you should skip over Dean BEING IN HELL. That was a major SL that quite frankly is far more important then Castiel and the angels and Ruby the wonder demon. It feels like a show of balance between Sam and Dean with their relationship is being replaced for the Castiel/Dean and Sam/Ruby show and I am not intrested in watching that.
We keep getting hints that Dean did something in hell, which is bad enough but we need to see more of PTSD and POW Dean and what he suffered and was tortured there or this entire arc looses it's impact and it is possible to focas on both brother's arc at the same time and less time on Ruby and Castiel.
Katie | Nov 6, 2008 11:59:20 AM | #"It feels like a show of balance between Sam and Dean with their relationship is being replaced for the Castiel/Dean and Sam/Ruby show and I am not intrested in watching that."
Katie-I am not interested in watching that either.
Thanks Marisa and Korbi! Supernatural is my show!!
Dennis | Nov 6, 2008 12:08:12 PM | #I love SPN, I love this season, I love the angels, I love it all, BUT they had better NOT make Sam a rapist which is exactly what he would be if he had sex with Ruby. It would be totally out of character for him to do that, grieving or not. I will be heartbroken if he slept with her thereby raping her 'vessel'. Meg was right, he should have sent Ruby back to hell. I don't care what she did to help him. There's still a girl in there that needs to be free.
carebear | Nov 6, 2008 12:23:15 PM | #I really dislike the rabid fanbase of Supernatural. Sam and Dean are good characters and I agree that this is their show, but we've now seen a TON of good supporting actresses come and go because the "fanatics" can't deal with Sam or Dean having a potential female equal.
I can't remember their character names at the moment, but Alona Tal and her mother, Ruby, Bella and there have been 3 or 4 others that have really brought a unique perspective to the show and all of them are written out because the vocal MINORITY wants to have their Sam and Dean show.
It takes a lot away from the show when you know any recurring guest stars (especially females) have no chance of lasting more than a few episodes.
Brian | Nov 6, 2008 1:01:34 PM | #Brian, I appreciate guest stars, and I really loved Jo and Ellen (still sorry they're gone) I'm not even opposed to love interests for the boys, (except Sam/Ruby I have a problem with because of the whole rape thing I mentioned above) However, Supernatural has always been and will always be the Sam and Dean show. It's not because of the 'rabid fanbase'. It's because that's the way Kripke has scripted it right from the start. It's never been an ensemble show. It's a show about the brothers, their relationship, and their fight...and that's it. Even John wasn't a regular, neither is Bobby. I can see why you might like to have a regular female character, but that won't ever happen. There will never be any other regular characters besides Dean and Sam, male or female.
carebear | Nov 6, 2008 1:40:33 PM | #other than Alona Tai and her mom, i didn't like any of the female characters they introduced. The simple fact is the show is better when it keeps it simple and they don't need any long-term romantic stories weighing them down. Bella was hot, but it felt like they were trying way too hard to force her into the story.
steve | Nov 6, 2008 2:33:04 PM | #This show would have millions more people watching if it were aired on a different day or time slot.
Way too much competition on Thursday's at 9pm. So much so that it's borderline ridicules.
I'm so not appreciative of the fact that Kripke & Co. are purposely shoving Sam aside and calling it being "cagey." It's not being cagey - it's bad storytelling. It's basically relegating Sam to nothing but a sidekick while Saint Dean's storyline, of course, unravels full speed with not a hidden spoiler or hold period in sight, complete with little press releases from Kripke on how wonderful Dean is and how important his secrets are. Sam's story has NOT been appropriately addressed. It's barely been addressed at all with the exception of a few action scenes. Once again, Dean angsts and emos his way through every episode, and Sam does nothing. What's even worse is that while Dean has a great character like Castiel as a platform for his storyline, Sam has Ruby - who is the suckiest character who ever sucked on television. She is awful, and by refusing to tell her and Sam's story, it makes her even more awful because she seems even more useless than usual. If there's so much going on with the character, for the love of God, SHOW IT. Don't have it all happen in your little heads or offscreen and then expect us to feel fulfillfed. Giving Sam a couple tiny flashback scenes almost halfway through he season sucks, frankly. The way Sam has been handled on this show is awful - his "plot" line has been dragged out, discontinued, abandoned, and now it's being hidden from viewers entirely!
