Hugh Laurie & Lisa Edelstein Talk About a House-Cuddy Hookup, Pregnancy & 3 Additional Seasons

By Korbi Ghosh

October 13, 02:58 AM

Hooking up, having a baby and doing House for three more years. Series stars Hugh Laurie and Lisa Edelstein speak...

LisaedelsteinSo, the word is out: we're hearing that House and Cuddy will kiss in this season's 6th episode. Any details?
Lisa Edelstein: I wouldn’t want to ruin anything, but they’re definitely exploring the House-Cuddy relationship further. And they manage to do it without losing that edgy dynamic that exists between them. [Executive Producer] David Shore never writes in a straight line so it’s been a lot of fun.

And it will be a lot of fun for the fans who've been begging to see a "Huddy" hookup for years.
LE: Many of them [have been vocal]. Whenever I date somebody [in real life], that person gets hate mail that I’m not dating Hugh, even though Hugh is married with a litter of children!

Speaking of children, is Cuddy finally going to get pregnant?
LE: That storyline continues this year. The struggle continues. There’s a lot of good Cuddy stuff coming up. It’s been really interesting so far, I’m excited about it.

Hughlaurie And how about House stuff? Are there new dimensions of him that you wish to explore?
Hugh Laurie: It would be impertinent of me to suggest that there are aspects of the character that exist that haven’t been considered by the writers. All actors have to be sufficiently humbled to realize that it begins with what the writers conceive and provide you with. And I think they would say there are layers to go, situations to put him in that will reveal anxiety and desires that he has. In fact, those are the things we have done so far this season. We see House in some pretty unusual situations
in the first half dozen shows, dealing with his own loss: his loss of Wilson, the loss of a parent. [He is] dealing with his own grief and what he thinks of grief, which shows [something] in him that surprises everyone, including House.

We've gotten to know House over the years and it seems that he likes to see his underlings succeed. He acts as if he's sadistic and uncaring, but maybe it's just extreme tough love?
HL: That’s a very good point. For all the enormous cruelty that he’s shown in all sorts of situations, perhaps you’re right, he wants to test people and put them in difficult positions, but he's never actually wanted them to fail. Maybe he’s a big old softie who wants nothing but the best for his children.

Would Cuddy agree?
LE: Yeah. I think if you asked Cuddy, she [would say that she] deeply admires this human being, as much as he’s a pain in the ass. I think she sees the best in him on that level even though he makes her life very, very difficult.

Robertseanleonard And how about House's relationship with Wilson? The term bromance has been tossed around. Is their friendship acting as House's surrogate for a romantic relationship?
HL: There may be some truth in that. [It's sort of like] Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. I mean, there is a kind of intimacy, I suppose, between [House and Wilson]. There is a sharing of knowledge that has a marital aspect to it.

LE: There’s a comfort [between them].

HL: Yeah.

LE: You can be yourself with each other.

HL: At the same time, we’re not similar. We’re complimentary on the most basic level. House wears jeans and a t-shirt, Wilson wears a pocket protector. We’re very different characters, but there is that [familiarity with one another].

Hugh, should we be congratulating you on three more seasons? The trade papers are reporting that you're committed to the show through 2012.
HL: Really?

LE:
Yes. But it doesn’t say the rest of us are [committed].

HL:
Yeah, so watch it. [Lisa laughs] No, I don’t know. I haven’t actually read that. I certainly feel very, very blessed to be doing what I’m doing. This is a character I am still fascinated by, a character I would say I love, actually. And I love the people I’m working with. I would be foolish not to go the distance with the show. And if [2012] is where it takes us, that’s where it takes us. It may all end in a week’s time. I’m always thinking that way.

Strange, I feel as if I have read this before.

Why are you reposting an old intervew?

| Oct 13, 2008 5:48:12 AM | #

Looks new to me... I wonder if the writers were waiting for Lisa to get pregnant in real life before they continued the pregnancy storyline?

KJ | Oct 13, 2008 8:23:07 AM | #

Korbi must have interviewed the whole cast during the season premiere, as every other reporter did, but this is Korbi's interview and it's new.

Thank you for the interview.

I don't get the last line, does it mean that everyone (Hugh, Robert, Jennifer, Jesse, Omar and Lisa) is comitted with the show till 2012?

| Oct 13, 2008 8:41:55 AM | #

I think he's being vague about it on purpose. But he did not deny that he's signed on through 2012, so I bet that means he is.

P | Oct 13, 2008 8:57:44 AM | #

No good idea Huddy, better Hameron!

fight for hameron

Aleki | Oct 13, 2008 9:59:04 AM | #

So fans want Hugh and Lisa together? And the only problem for Lisa is that he's married, but she's not denying she likes him! I can't stop laughing!

GH | Oct 13, 2008 11:44:36 AM | #

I think the reason why this interview seems old is because LE always talks about the same things: Hugh, Cuddy's relationship with House and pregnancies. No one would tell that her character is supposed to be running a hospital.

Sarah | Oct 13, 2008 12:25:53 PM | #

WTF is a Hameron? Is this Gossip Girl or House M.D.?

Jim | Oct 13, 2008 12:43:14 PM | #

I think they ruined Cuddy when they started pushing her as House's love interest at the end of season 2. She's now flaky and House's doormat.

I want this story line over so Cuddy can go back to being strong and capable again.

Jane | Oct 13, 2008 1:17:10 PM | #

I agree with Jane. Cuddy should be the strong woman she started out being. She IS House's doormat. She deserves better. The character Of House may be very intelligent, but Cuddy's character of being so caring couldn't tolerate someone so bitter for very long. She either needs to be given a romance outside of the hospital, maybe even explore one with a woman. They've thrown that hint around somewhat, I've heard House say more than once that 'rumor has it that you're a transexual', or something to that effect! Or maybe Cuddy has been so burned by someone, she doesn't want anyone. I'd like to see them put her in one of her real-life loves: animals! Show her character making some difference there & maybe it will help for real a bit to spread the news of how we treat our animals & how they should be treated. Just my opinion.

Jay | Oct 13, 2008 2:37:19 PM | #

Sarah, ITA, but also because ts the same old recycled story line they've been doing for her for the past three years - "Cuddy wants a baby, Cuddy won't get a baby". It just goes on ad nauseum & the only difference is each time Cuddy just becomes more stupidly hysterical & an even worse doctor.

Amber | Oct 13, 2008 2:41:41 PM | #

Hamerom=House & Cameron!!

Michele | Oct 13, 2008 3:21:59 PM | #

I LOVE the character of Cuddy! My favourite!
Getting a bit sick of people being bashing that character, 99% of the time women! Why can't we support a sexy, smart woman in the workplace ?Double standards, double standards ! Nobody's complaining about House and his actions in the workplace!
Like that is appropriate ! At the end of the day people, it's a tv-show !
Oh and GO HUDDY !! and Lisa can date anyone she wants.. those fans sending her BF hatemail are delusional !

Eve | Oct 13, 2008 3:33:04 PM | #

Eve, I support a sexy, smart character in the workplace and her name is Cameron.

Laura | Oct 13, 2008 3:41:33 PM | #

Of course, I'm happy for LE because she's been lobbying for more attention since the very beginning of the show. But geez!! I do not like the Huddy. I usually TiVo right past it. And the baby arc? Oh please. Ugh!!!
I want MOAR Wilson.

Marsha | Oct 13, 2008 4:10:32 PM | #

Sticking up for Huddy! I love both characters and Cuddy is the only believable female he could hook up with. Their spikey relationship is huge fun, and clearly the writers and actors have fun with it. However, hard to see anyone having a real romance with House. Love him as a character, but he'd be terrible as a boyfriend!

Cath | Oct 13, 2008 4:16:53 PM | #

I hate how he's like "It may all end in a week’s time. I’m always thinking that way" I would just about die if it were to happen like that..

LauriegirlUK | Oct 13, 2008 5:52:34 PM | #

Korbi, who would you rather see House with, Cameron or Cuddy?

mjs | Oct 13, 2008 7:35:06 PM | #

I'd actually like to see him with Mira Sorvino's character. They seem well matched.

AT the end of the day, Cameron has just got too much hero worship going on.

handtalker | Oct 13, 2008 9:23:00 PM | #

It's just going to be one little bitty kiss as far as I know. They are not getting together, but Chase and Cameron are.

Lily | Oct 13, 2008 10:29:30 PM | #

Yeah LE really does say the same thing over and over again, which is pretty much why I feel like I've read this before. Like a few others, I don't like the idea of Huddy, and I can't stand it. Thank goodness for the fast forward button.

Kylie | Oct 13, 2008 11:40:10 PM | #

mjs, i like House with Cuddy. always have... then again, i haven't seen Cameron in a scene with House for so long, i don't really remember if they have chemistry...

korbi_ghosh | Oct 13, 2008 11:51:39 PM | #

Then Korbi, I suggest catching up on reruns, any episode before the Tritter arc will do :)

You're right about Cameron not being in a scene with House for so long, since TPTB start pushing Cuddy up and front (mid season 3), Cameron's barely seen interacting with House. And lately she looks rather annoyed with him.

TPTB want to make believable a relationship between House and Cuddy, I get it, but there's no need to destroy who Cameron is in the process.

| Oct 14, 2008 8:59:28 AM | #

Cameron's character has always been dull and annoying in my opinion. Always. Never saw a tiny hint of chemistry there. She is no match for House AT ALL. The fact that we are seeing less of her just thrills me to no end.

I don't ship anyone, but I do agree with David Shore that Cuddy is the only woman on the show House could have a relationship with.

Dana | Oct 14, 2008 10:38:13 AM | #

I like the idea of House and Cameron. And I agree that they did have chemistry and due to the whole Huddy thing in addition to the new team, they just sent Cameron to the side and that's it. I miss Cameron, she was and still is an integral part of the show and it just sucks that in 3 episodes, she hasn't had one scene. How does that count as "being back" like Katie Jacobs had promised us yet again?

I never liked the idea of Huddy, and I started to dislike Cuddy since season 2. Her character is boring to say the least, and instead of being the boss of a whole hospital, she has puppy eyes for House and let's him get away with everything and only when her job is on the line does she become the big scary boss she's supposed to be every day. I just want Huddy to be over and done with so they can move on to other storylines that don't involve Huddy itself and that damn 13.

Charli | Oct 14, 2008 12:21:19 PM | #

House and Cuddy are the hottest non-couple on television. (And I have nothing but love for Wilson, too.)

Hameron is as boring as day-old toast.

Robin | Oct 14, 2008 7:56:40 PM | #

I love the chemistry between House and Cuddy. It's wonderful to see them scheme and seethe, the whole time knowing what they both really want is sex. Please, DS, give them what they want and make me a happy girl.

Alex | Oct 14, 2008 7:59:52 PM | #

"LE: Many of them [have been vocal]. Whenever I date somebody [in real life], that person gets hate mail that I’m not dating Hugh"

What? That's strange.

House belong with Cameron anyway.

meme | Oct 14, 2008 11:52:54 PM | #

I like Hameron way more than Huddy (mostly cause I'm in love with Jennifer Morrison) but I don't care if Huddy happens. Their ship will pass just as Hameron did and frankly I can't wait cause every interview that LE does now is about Huddy and she's forced to repeat herself over and over cause that's the "most interesting" :P thing that's going on with her character. The some thing happened to JMo when Hameron was the OTP of House.
It would be nice to hear something non-Huddy related for a change!

Megan | Oct 15, 2008 1:29:59 PM | #

I think LE is in love with Hugh and so she isn´t able to talk about anything else^^
*lol*

you don´t want to know my name | Oct 27, 2008 9:48:43 AM | #

THIS IS SUCH A WONDERFUL, COMPLEX SHOW.ALL ACTORS ARE FANTISTIC,,,,AND HUGH LAURIE....GOD THOSE EYES!!!! THE WRITERS MAKE EACH SHOW LEAVING YOU HUNGRY FOR MORE.

KATHY | Oct 27, 2008 12:22:22 PM | #

Huddy fans may want to hold on to that passionate kiss in "Joy" because it's comfirmed that there will be no further love connection between House and Cuddy, and that they will be remaining professional.

As Far as Hameron goes, House never showed feelings for Cameron, and he even shot her down when they went on a "date."

Though in reality Spencer and Morrison are through, Cameron is with Chase for the moment. Their relationship apparently seems to falter in episode 7.

House goes solo, and as long as Wilson plays the "battered best friend" role, so shall he remain. A bitter yet accurate future nonetheless.

CJ | Oct 28, 2008 10:17:48 PM | #

you don´t want to know my name, ITA! *lol* It's sooo obvious!

CJ, I really want to know where it was confirmed that House and Cuddy will remain professionals, because for the look of next episode, that it's not exactly what it's going to happen.

GH | Nov 2, 2008 6:46:40 PM | #

Absolutely love Huddy and I hope that they do develope a long lasting (until the end of the show long lasting) relationship and I hope the show never ends!!! I don't think lisa edelstein says the same thing over and over, and there's nothing wrong with expressing your opinion of how you want your character to be protrayed. I think the ratings would drop with a House/Cameron hookup. I like Cameron much better now that she no longer works for House and I love her and Chase together. I mean really, House could easily be Cameron's father and I doubt that all of you who want House with Cameron would date someone your father's age. And forget Cuddy with a woman, that would definitely ruin the show. If Hugh Laurie or Lisa Edelstein ever left the show, I know I would never watch it again. Hope I'm not rambling, or saying "the same thing over and over" lol

cl | Nov 5, 2008 4:42:58 PM | #

I concur with everything "cl" aforementioned but will add my own sparse bit of creativity...

Let's give House and Cuddy their love child, miscarriage ensues, Wilson comforts Cuddy whilst Cameron brings House solace, Chase has jealousy once more, meanwhile Kutner is fired for some errant mistake and Foreman battle's to save his job since he remembers his own mistakes underneath House, Taub dies somehow (he's disposable sadly), 13 continues battling her Hutchison's, and as a cliffhanger we find that Cameron did in fact seduce House one night and has become pregnant with the baby Cuddy always wanted (leaving everyone bewildered and House MD looking more like an episode of Californication instead - love that show also btw)...of course all this would take about three seasons to accomplish.
