Are Lois & Clark Falling In Love? 'Smallville's' Erica Durance Spills

Ericadurance Clois fans, I think you're going to like reading this little interview with Smallville's Erica Durance. Sounds like it's going to be a good year for y'all...

I know a lot of Smallville fans are a bit worried, because you're down a couple cast members this season, but I saw the premiere and thought it was good. How are you feeling about what's coming up?
I'm really excited. We have lost a couple great characters, but it's nice to get fresh blood in there and regenerate. It allows the writers to introduce new story lines, and this year is a great growing year for everybody [who has stuck around]. They are all having to accept who they are, and people are going to be very excited to see that Clark comes to terms with his gift and the responsibilities that that entails. He makes a lot more independent choices and you see a lot more strength there.

How will Lois grow? I know that she and Clark are working together at the Daily Planet...
Yes, for Lois, here she is, showing that she really is a talented journalist and she's made her way into the paper and kind of climbed the ranks and proven herself. And then Clark comes in, and she sees him as somewhat dim-witted, thinks she needs to help him out. But something changes. What she has to come to terms with this season is the fact that she really does feel strongly -- much more strongly than she wants to admit -- about Clark. And we'll see how she evades having to deal with that. She’s not ready to admit it. The writers have done such a great job of sprinkling it in there with comedy and drama. And that’s what I’ve really enjoyed about this year. We have a couple episodes that [expose] a very sort of comedic, Moonlighting-esque relationship between Clark and Lois. And that’s been really fun. For example, they have to go undercover to find this bad guy, and they end up [posing] as an engaged couple. So she enjoys making him squirm and just throwing out little things to see how he reacts.

She’s messing with him a little bit?
Just a little bit. I think it’s healthy. No one else does.

Do you think she’ll get jealous when Lana comes back? Or when they introduce Maxima, who is going to be another love interest for Clark?
They have created this great situation where you're going to see Lois worrying about this stuff for the first time. And I know Maxima is an actual character within the comic books, so I think it will be cool to see this girl come in. But Lois does find them in a compromising position and she has to deal with that. And that’s the thing, how she feels about Clark has always been a part of her, but it’s now kind of surprising her how intense it is. And they do have Lana coming back and those will certainly be tough moments for her. I’m not sure how they’re going to do it, but I hope they keep her from being jealous in a petty way. I think that’s too simple for how she really feels, you know? And it kind of dumbs her down a bit, so I’m hoping they deal with it in a very gentle manner.

The producers have been saying Lana will return at a very inopportune moment for Clark and Lois.
I’d love to give you a spoiler, but the producers haven’t even given me that! But I am expecting to see something that hits her like a Mack Truck. That’s what I love about it. I get these moments where I get to be really funny, and have all these weird defense mechanisms, and do all these crazy things. And then, all of a sudden, they’ll put in a small moment where Lois gets to be really vulnerable and something gets in there that hurts, and it’s really fun to play that.

I hear that she still has some residual feelings for Oliver though, no?
Well, it’s not that she’s still in love Oliver, it’s just that she loves him and there’s an episode where she has to face the fact that he may die. And what it has done is create yet another moment for Lois and Clark to have this talk, saying, what’s the deal? I’m not in love with this person, but I do care about them. And it also creates this moment for Clark to tell her about [his experience] with Lana. What I like about it is she's escaped some big love triangle, which is refreshing, because we’ve done that for a few seasons. This year, the focus is on her brain and intellect, and honestly, on her discovery of her feelings for Clark. I want to protect that, especially for the fans. They're very protective of those two and that relationship. And there have been times where I’ve had to say, let’s make sure Lois stays worthy of this relationship and doesn't find herself as some little love toy.

Lois is no one's love toy. She has too much strength.
Yeah, you know, over the course of the show it seems that each character gets powers, so this year, the audience will actually get to see Lois with a power.

With a superpower?
Yeah. I think they're going to take all of Lois’ anger and angst and give her the ability to throw people around. We haven’t shot it yet, but I’m very excited about it.

What else are you hoping to see happen for Lois this year?
You know, up until this season, the big thing that I was campaigning for was the continuation of the Superman mythology. I really wanted her to get in there and do more investigative work and be part of those main story lines. And that’s what they're playing with and I think it's really fun.
She does kind of go off on her own, and she usually ends up in the same place as Clark, but she gets there through her street savvy and he gets there through his superpowers. We play with the whole idea that he may have to come in to save the day and she doesn’t notice. So she’s very involved in the nitty gritty. They are just giving her more intelligence and she’s progressed a lot.

Word is there was supposed to be a kiss between Lois and Clark in the fifth episode, but it was scrapped. What happened there?
It was part of an original draft and it's not uncommon for things to be rewritten, there are so many different revisions. So it got out that that was going to happen, and then it just didn’t end up happening. I think it worked out perfectly, because I want to build to the point where people are really excited about it. It was just too early in the season and we hadn’t [shot] any of those other moments where you see Lois as vulnerable. We hadn't seen much of how they encounter each other, I like to say like two boxers in a ring. There wasn’t enough of that interplay yet.

So a kiss is something we can look forward to in the future.
Oh, yeah!

Are you pumped to see some Clois love, or do you want things to go a different way? Let's discuss in the comments section.

Thanks so much for sharing this with us! I am really looking forward to Lois being more upfront this season and the interaction between Lois and Clark as the season goes on. And I love that Erica seems really excited in being able to do more this season than every before. I think it'll be the best season yet!

Wow Erica's mouth must be dry by now! how many interviews did you give girl?. I think that that's one of the reasons why I love her that much, she is always great with us, her fans, and I love how much she cares for Lois. In all the interviews she did she talk about a lot of things that we are glad to hear. Than you very much Erica and I congratulations for being in more that 13 episodes this year. XOXO Celia.

Pumped!

Finally! The relationship we've all been waiting for. Durance is wonderful. Count me in among the super-excited for this season!!

Oh yeah! Give me more clois any day of the week! Erica is absolutely awesome and I especially love that she fights so hard for us to get what we want, which is a great story about superman and not a poor imitation of him. She really understands who Lois Lane is and how she should be portrayed. She just GETS Lois Lane and for that I give my utmost gratitude. Thanks for the interview!

Thanks for another great interview with a lovely and talented Canadian!

Although I like Clark and Chloe, I am very excited about Clark & Lois because they really are the money couple! (I was not sad to say good-bye to Lana but I am still missing Lex!!)

Kath | Sep 19, 2008 7:37:52 AM | #

"They are just giving her more intelligence and she’s progressed a lot." So...she had a brain transplant? Call me when Lex starts discovering his feelings for Clark, and then I'll tune in.

Thanks Korbi for the great interview!

It's always interesting to hear the actor's views on their character. I'm so glad Erica Durance is trying to make sure there is 'no petty jealousy' and keeping Lois the intelligent, tough woman who has been a role-model for 70-some years.

I wish Tom Welling would give a few interviews, it would be really interesting to hear what he thinks about his character, as he is the show's central character.

I really enjoyed the new direction of the show. I think I just became a full time Smallville fan! The Lois and Clark interaction was a real highlight. They had great banter and chemistry. I loved Clark in that last scene. I don't think I've ever seen him so sure of himself and smiling so often. The Justice League stuff was awesome as well. Nice to see Clark starting to think beyond himself, and at a more global level.

I love the chemistry between the two of them and I'm relieved they're putting an end to the Lana/Clark/Lex triangle they had going on. I want more Lois in season 8, I think Erica Durance is great.

This should be Smallville's last season. The concept of the series, the magic, the quality are gone. Lois' is supposed to be strong, but with her limited acting ability she comes across as a cow in overdrive.

The rating for premiere was very very LOW. alot lower than any previouis clanacentric episodes..so i take it most of fans hate the idia of smallville turned into lois & clark.

ClanaSells | Sep 20, 2008 8:17:36 PM | #

I believe most fans love that smallville is finally turning to a lois and clark story and turning clark into the mild mannered nerdy reporter who finally wants to be the superman that we all know he is destined to become. This is the season that most fanc have been waiting for. I am so glad that Lana is gone. The writers made her personality so undesirable. Lois has so much more class and character than Lana does and is so much more deserving of Clark.

Love Erica with Tom | Sep 21, 2008 9:15:02 PM | #

Lois is a great character and don't get me wrong I loved lana's character to, but how is lois and clark suppose to end up together when she already knows how he looks like. Yes, most fans are happy lois and clark might be getting together, but I bet you everyone loved lana to at one point, that's why this show lasted as long as it has

From Israel, thanks Erica for giving us some excitement and some more details, it's about time, I love the way you care about us fans and about the Lois in the show. good luck!

I don't get everyone saying they've been waiting for Clark and Lois to happen, like it's something new and fresh, when it's already been a very tired part of the mythos for several decades. What an old, stale storyline....doesn't matter how many different actors you get to play the same two characters. I would rather see Clark do some developing toward accepting his DESTINY and forgetting about love interests for a minute. Why not take a little breather from the agonizing triangles that have monopolized the past seven seasons? Please!

I soooooo love CLOIS.. the only reason why I continue to watch the show....

deena | Oct 10, 2008 5:05:33 PM | #

Are you kidding me with the Lana thing?? I thought that was over! I was excited for the most recent episode where Lois had to admit that she loves Clark! But seriously, Lana! Ugh! When will that chapter be over!

Kay | Oct 17, 2008 2:35:49 AM | #

just like in the tv servies lois and clark their was this game with lois and clark which kept it interesting....same thing with smallville...they have a great dynamic those two..love it

I love the idea of Clois!!
I think the reason there were so ratings dropped for premiere of season 8 is because of season 7. I at least didn't find season 7 that interesting, waaaay to much Clana drama. I'm excited to start watching every episode again!!
