'Weeds' Justin Kirk Talks Candidly About What's To Come

Justinkirk Last night, Weeds wrapped it fourth season with a finale (up 31% over last year's finale ratings, btw) that didn't include any actual fires, but certainly set a few new story lines ablaze. Two in particular will set the scene for next year's action and the hilarious Justin Kirk (El Andy) was cool enough to discuss a couple possibilities with me...

You guys are killin' it.
It was a good year, right? I'll go as far as to say it was our finest season.

Being out of Agrestic and in a whole new environment, do you feel like it's a different show?
Well, I think that it's progressed in a way that made it great. That's the thing, it's still following the same people obviously, but if you're lucky enough to be around for awhile, I think you have to make it new. I think [the changes have] really energized the writers room, and the new location has given us more to do. I mean, come on, me and Doug as coyotes? There's comedy gold in that.

Yeah, how much fun did you have with that material?
[Laughs] So much fun. I'm looking right now at the El Andy velvet painting, which I managed to procure. They gave it to me, and they're going to have someone from the company that does our official Weeds merchandise come over to take pictures of it, so there will be an El Andy t-shirt.

Nice! Now, we need to talk about the finale, specifically about the moment where Doug accuses Andy of being in love with Nancy.
You know, I was bummed because it was a long episode and there was so much great stuff, so a couple scenes where I was really doing the 'I'm in love with Nancy' shtick got cut for time. I quite enjoy playing that storyline. I find it hilarious. And not difficult to pretend to be enamored with Mary-Louise Parker.

So, what's the deal? He seemed surprised by the notion at first, but then confused, and definitely considering the possibility.
Well that's the thing -- I tried to modulate my story arc [during] that episode -- there was first discovery, and then I had a scene with Silas in the Cheese Shop where I can't stop thinking about it, so that by the time she gets home, I can barely even sit next to her. [Laughs] And then we have that bathroom scene, which was really a lot of fun.

I can imagine. You think Andy really is in love with Nancy?
Well... I don't know. I do like that there's a name for what we would be, which of course is "Nandy." But, yeah, I think that everything that was expressed in this episode is real, but where that ends up going next season, I couldn't tell ya. But I thought it was a fun way to end [the year].

I'm trying to entertain the possibility of Nancy having romantic feelings for Andy.
It seems-- Alright, let me tell you something, you better take it easy before you offend me! [Laughs] No, I always thought it would be ridiculous and not appropriate for those two characters to have anything of that nature, but I guess the longer you stay around, new things become clear and who knows. I mean, I guess in the long run, I'd probably be pretty good for her compared to all the crazy people she's been involved with before.

You've always been there for her.
I'm in the house, I take care of the kids. Of course I may just be deeply in character and speaking from Andy's point of view. [Laughs] So yeah, I don't know what it is, but I certainly get a kick out of playing that story.

I'd like to see it.
Right, why not? You know, we had that scene on the beach a few episodes ago where Andy's like, why don't I have a girlfriend? Andy's getting a little soft as the seasons go by.

There was no S&M this year.
There's wasn't. What was the most horrible thing that went down? Well, he slept with Mermex. That was a tough one because Andy, I do believe, has a strong moral code, and she wasn't exactly together with Doug, but it was tricky.

It wasn't Andy's fault.
You're okay with it?

She seduced you.
She seduced me! The wily Mermex.

Too bad she's out of the picture already, but now Nancy's pregnant, so...
Maybe it's mine.

The thought did cross my mind.
Maybe we didn't have sex, but my semen is so powerful, that it was left somewhere in the house, somehow crawled up there and fertilized her eggs. I think it's a possibility...

I really do hope they bring it back in nine months so we can see what has progressed and how Nancy is dealing with her current situation.

Thanks D
