Casey Cartwright is Greek's top goddess with the majority of the show's drama  revolving around her. And though she's a fan favorite now, she wasn't always the sweetest sorority sister on Greek row. Spencer Grammer, the girl behind Casey, was kind enough to talk with me about her character's growth and what she's got going on this season. Peruse the interview and press play on the clip below for more one-on-one time with Greek's reigning queen...

And don't forget, Greek season two premieres tonight on ABC Family at 9 p.m.

Casey is really the center of the show in many ways. She wasn’t necessarily the most likeable character when Greek first began, but she's evolved quite a bit.
Yeah, my character has definitely had a lot of sides. Starting with the pilot, I did some bad things and that was the hardest part about playing Casey, especially since, you know, I had just met everyone. I got cast the week before they began to film, so I kinda got thrown into it. Making a character likeable when she cheats on her boyfriend, then gets back together with him and doesn’t really like her brother is kind of hard to pull off, I guess. But as the season progressed, I think we see there’s a human aspect to her. Like most people, you can try to be good. I think what's great about our show is that there are good characters who do bad sometimes and bad characters who do good things, and that’s kind of just the way the world works. Nothing is really black and white.

Do you enjoy playing Casey?
I just love playing Casey. It’s an awesome experience for me. So much has happened. For me, I think Casey was much more vulnerable in the beginning, much more unsure of herself and unsure of where she was, she was sort of looking. She thought she had goals and then they all changed. She wanted to be president and now that she is president, I find that the character is more confident and I’m more confident in the character also. Sometimes art and life imitate each other.

Some of it comes second nature to you now?
I mean, at first when I started having to do all those speeches, which I wasn’t used to, I was like [exasperated groan]. But now I do speeches all the time, like, ah, whatever. Speech here, speech there. I’m just talking all the time. It was hard learning that, but you do get used to it.

Do you think Casey will hold on to her post as ZBZ president this season?

I think everyone in the sorority is eventually going to be president. [Laughs] I think my term is ending eventually. That’s just bound to happen. It makes good television. Lots of drama. Who knows?

I did hear you're going to be having elections again.
Oh yeah!

And Frannie will go head-to-head with you to reclaim the presidency.

That’ll be good, yeah. You know, the rift between Casey and Frannie gets worse, because Frannie and Evan have started dating, so that’s a big thing for this second season, sort of learning to accept that. [Laughs] Or not accept it. Acceptance and forgiveness are two important things that everyone deals with in their early 20s. Like, how do you handle situations like that? I think it’s true to what happens in college, learning to make your own choices as individuals and whatnot.

But the show is also so much fun.
Yes, I get to laugh a lot. I love doing our show. We have a really talented cast and [the writers give us]  some really good stuff. [The second episode of this season] is really comedic. You were at the table read, right?

Yeah, I laughed a lot too. And Casey and Ashleigh (Amber Stevens) sort of butt heads in that episode.

Yeah, it's going to be really fun, because Amber is just such a great actress to work off of. She does her thing so well.

And we meet your new love interest in that second hour as well, although we don't necessarily know that he's going to be your new guy just yet. Are you happy about having a fresh face or--?
Oh, yeah!

So you weren't hoping that Casey and Cappie would be together, following that season finale Spring Break kiss?
No, I think if Casey and Cappie get together it’s almost the end of the show. You have to save that, because I think Casey and Cappie are meant to be together in the end. [The show] is sort of the journey they go on to try and find each other, and the journey they go on individually, which affects whether or not they will rekindle that love that you saw in the beginning. So I think it’s good to have Casey [looking elsewhere]. I’m like, thank God Casey is having a boyfriend because I want to do some happy, flirting scenes, instead of always fighting with the girls. It’ll be a nice change and I look forward to it. I mean, he’s really great, Michael [Rady]. I did a chemistry read with all the guys [who were auditioning for the role] -- it was really fun -- and he did a great job. So I’m happy he’s on the show. He seems like a really nice guy.

Did you have any say in who got cast?
No. I mean, I was like, that guy’s cute. And they’re like, that’s great, Spencer. We’re going to turn it over to network now. But he’ll be fun, I think. He seems really sweet and perfect for the conflict that is going to arise.

Yes, I hear Cappie is going to get a little jealous.
Oh, good! In the last script I got, I was like wow, Rebecca and Cappie are fighting all the time. That sounds unfun for everyone. But Rebecca just keeps getting hit with punches, so she’s got all that dramatic stuff working for her now, it’s tough.

It seems like Rebecca and Casey may become a little bit closer this season.
As friends, yeah, for sure. And I think that will be an interesting character arc and an interesting transition for everyone. I'm actually looking forward to that. But then we’re going to have to find a new nemesis for Casey
, because your protagonist is only as good as your antagonist. Frannie will probably take that role.

Frannie will fill that void well, I’m sure.

[Laughs] There's some good drama to come.

Korbi, I was such a big, big fan of your quickies at E! I miss them so much, but happy to find you at Zap2it, I love this site, thank u for covering Greek so great! It's such a good show, I can't wait for tonight's episode, this show doesn't get enough love, you are the only one who's been on top of it since the beginning!

Oh, and I like Casey but Cappie is better with Rebecca Logan.

Spencer's adorable. And I think it'll be nice for Rebecca and Casey to become a little closer. Lord, I hope we don't have to wait till the last season for Cappie and Casey. I mean, I don't want them to get together and then break up, but I also don't want a 'Wildfire' where we get them for 6 episodes and then it's done.
