E.P. Katie Jacobs Talks About 'House's' Emmy Noms, Plus What's To Come For Cameron & Chase
With two past Emmy nominations already under the show's belt, you might think House executive producer Katie Jacobs would sleep soundly through this morning, totally over the whole nom announcement process. Not so. "The funny thing is, I'm getting older," she told me. "I woke up at 6:11 and thought, well, I guess we didn't get nominated. Usually the show publicist will call, and I hadn't heard from anyone, so I thought that was it. Turns out I'd read the clock wrong. It was actually 4:11! I got the call about an hour and a half later."
Though the nomination wasn't unexpected, Jacobs explains that it still means a great deal to them: "There's a lot of anxiety, given the fact that we've had previous nominations, because you don't know whether or not you're going to fall [out of contention]. And it's even more exciting in a way, for a show that's been on the air for some time, to know that the Academy voters are still happy with what we're doing."
As for star Hugh Laurie's nod, Jacobs told me she was not surprised at all: "It was more of a surprise two years ago when he did not get nominated." As of 9 a.m. today, she had not yet spoken to Mr. Laurie, but said they were all due on set within the half hour and she was looking forward to seeing him and getting his reaction.
She hadn't yet connected with fellow E.P. David Shore or director Greg Yaitanes -- who got a directing nomination for season four's penultimate episode, 'House's Head' -- either. "This is the sign of a fifth year show," Jacobs explained. "[In years past], I used to get my phone and quietly go outside, so I wouldn't wake my family, and call everyone."
Still, the whole House fam will be celebrating today. With champagne?, I asked. "Probably, she said. But I'm not supposed to do that sort of thing, so no!" But the party won't last too long since they've got a full day's work ahead of them. They are currently shooting the season's sixth episode and Jacobs tells me it's an hour that will focus on... wait for it... Cameron and Chase: "Cameron will have a case, and through that storyline, we'll be able to explore Cameron and Chase's relationship and where they're at right now. We have sort of an embarrassment of riches with so many talented cast members, and it wasn't like we were trying to ignore any of our characters, but I think we are doing a better job of utilizing all their talents this year. At least I hope we are."
What? Cameron and Chase in the spotlight? That's the most promising thing I've heard in a very long time. They should be embarrassed for ignoring Jesse Spencer and Jennifer Morrison's characters and the talented actors who play them. I hope that means that next season will see some balance and that this isn't just a bone being thrown to the Chase and Cameron fans who have stuck out the nonsense of Season 4. They're the ones who kept saying that Chase and Cameron would be "back" and "significant." I hope they keep their word (finally) and deliver.
Finally Cameron and Chase get some screentime instead of just focusing on the BORING(hear that KJ?)new people. But please tell me they're not going to be together because it's just as crazy as House and Cuddy getting together.
Glad the show got nominated. Now Hugh HAS to win.
ada | Jul 17, 2008 12:18:33 PM | #Maybe Cameron and Chase will decide that in order for their relationship to survive, Cameron must get over her ridiculous crush on House and, thus, she should work at another hospital instead of at PPTH.
MochaKitovna | Jul 17, 2008 12:46:41 PM | #I'm not buying anything that Katie Jacobs promises anymore, shame on her. All I hope is that this episode is not Cameron and Chase's screentime quota for the season but the fact that we have to wait till episode 6th into the season to watch Cameron and Chase have a storyline of their own tells me that season 5 is going to be a repeat of last year's. Thank you so much Korbi for giving us a spoiler about Cameron and Chase, this is the first spoiler we get about them in over a year.
| Jul 17, 2008 1:55:57 PM | #"and it wasn't like we were trying to ignore any of our characters"
does she think we are idiots? of course they didn't try it, they simply did it in spite of our complains about the lack of Cameron and Chase in season 4. And they did nothing to reassure fans that they would be back. It was a lie after another lie. What a hypocrite she is.
Sea | Jul 17, 2008 2:02:07 PM | #Wow, alot of anger here...
But really, I am glad to hear a little more about Cameron and Chase and I hope they find a way to fit them back in on a more regular basis. Even if it weren't in a medical way, like say if Kutner and Chase became friends or 13 having a thing for Chase or maybe that is who Wilson turns to now that he is clearly angry with House...
It is nice to hear that Chase and Cameron will get a little focus. Now, please make that focus not hinge on Cameron's crush on House. I'd like to see a little of Chase and Cameron's relationship. I like them together. I like the new team just fine and just would like to see Chase and Cameron have a little more organic reason to be in a storyline.
jackie | Jul 17, 2008 2:34:45 PM | #Did Katie Jacobs' nose grow while she was telling you this? Did you check to see if her pants were on fire? Can we really believe her this time? I hope so. I am already sick of hearing about Thirteen's upcoming storylines, so this will give me something to look forward to in the new season. I don't expect it to be about Cameron's "crush" at all. That's been over for a long time. But I share the same worry as one of the previous posters and hope that this will not be the first time we see them in Season 5.
Roxi | Jul 17, 2008 3:01:30 PM | #Gosh. I feel like I should print this article and put it in a gold frame. It's the first spoiler that hasn't revolved around Hilson, Huddy , or that horrible Thirteen character in over a year.
It will be interesting to get a glimpse of their relationship, since we haven't gotten to see much of it. I hope and pray Cam doesn't spend the entire ep obsessing over House.
michelle | Jul 17, 2008 3:07:56 PM | #Seriously...the show is called HOUSE for a reason. All that really matters is how much screen time Hugh Laurie gets. With two exceptions,(Wilson and Cuddy) I think they can forget about ALL the other characters...give them spin-offs or just send them packing. The House/Wilson and House/Cuddy relationships are the heart, soul and cornerstone of the show. The rest of the characters are just distractions.
Nina | Jul 17, 2008 3:47:55 PM | #More Cameron?! Did I read that correctly? YESSS!!! I've missed her a great deal.
Sabrina S. | Jul 17, 2008 4:38:39 PM | #Korbi, you have a thankless task. Thank you for trying, but seriously, no one believes a word Katie Jacob utters & you should tell her that. She's lied consistently in the past about Cameron & Chase's role on the show & there's no reason to believe she's telling the truth now. All she's doing (yet again) is stringing along the fans who miss C&C & also can't stand her precious 13, who has to rank as the most boring & cliched character on TV right now.
Ecka | Jul 17, 2008 4:56:18 PM | #oh yes...more cameron but I don't want to see cameron in love with chase!! This is ilogical and out of her character...
| Jul 17, 2008 4:58:58 PM | #This is the best news I've heard about this show in a long time! I will never understand why they replaced the brilliance of Chase and Cameron with the blandness of the new team. I've given this season a chance and been sorely disappointed; I'll only give an episode or two a chance next season. If it's as bad as S4, I'll stop watching.
londonbridge | Jul 17, 2008 5:40:46 PM | #Im starting to think I should stop reading comments, cause till I read these, I didnt know Katie J. was a liar. All I knew was I like Cameron & Chase, but figured its House's show..so....one thing I wonder about is how humiliating it must be for Foreman..which begs the question..why dont they give him a romance with 13? that'd fry House, right? I still love the show, but it is unbalanced considering all the available talent..I miss the bad cop too...what happened to him? people, fill me in!!
lizouttavegas | Jul 17, 2008 5:56:17 PM | #Unfortunately, I no longer believe a word Katie Jacobs says. She's lied too many times in the past.
If it's true that there is an episode dealing with Cameron and Chase, it's very good news because the show has been poorer for the lack of those characters. There are so many unanswered questions about them still, not the least being what is happening in their lives.
I wish I could believe her this time because I am so tired of the Huddy and the House/Wilson estrangements that they do every year and I am especially tired of Thirteen. But I've been burned by Shore and Jacobs too many times already.
Until I hear differently, this feels like yet another tease to keep Cameron and Chase fans from turning to other channels at the start of the season. Sorry, Katie, but you've fooled me too many times before.
Kate | Jul 17, 2008 6:43:14 PM | #FINALLY a ChaseCam plot... I just hope they don't completely murder the couple and make them break up. I want them to be happy and for this to build the relationship and make it stronger.
Casie ann | Jul 17, 2008 6:45:33 PM | #OMG, YES PLEASE!!!! Cameron and Chase in the spotlight! Very nice.
Even if it means House and Cuddy get to hang out separately ))
Naika | Jul 17, 2008 7:02:20 PM | #CONGRATULATIONS to HOUSE and especially to HUGH LAURIE, one of the most AMAZING actors I've ever had the pleasure of watching.
I don't care for the new team but it doesn't really matter. I only watch the show for House and Wilson.
I hope they make up soon.
Oh...I DO wish 13 would go away. Maybe bring the older guy who wasn't really a doctor back. He was a HOOT!!
Don't put ALL the work on Hugh.
And STOP wasting Chase!
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.
I seriously hope that this isn't going to be the same deal as it was last season. Didn't I read last time that Katie Jacobs had said that by the 8th or so episode, Cameron and Chase would be back in full capacity? Well I'm hoping that this little teaser that she slipped out isn't going to be one those things she says to keep Cameron and Chase fans watching because they will only be there for a few minutes.
Like other people have mentioned above, this better not be the only episode that they are in where they have actual storylines. One episode does not absolve the disaster of a season that was season 4. There's still a hell of a lot of making up to do for these characters and their fanbases. Let's hope that this is a start of a very long future.
FINALLY a storyline that's not about Huddy or stupid boring Thirteen. I've never disliked a character so much until they created Thirteen. Worst character. EVER!
Yay for Cameron and Chase! Now THAT episode I will definitely watch!
I think Katie Jacobs is a sweetheart and it seems like she really cares about the show, I don't understand why everyone's hatin!
P | Jul 18, 2008 2:28:44 AM | #P, because she's a lying liar who lies and thinks we're stupid enough to believe her. That comment about C&C being back in "full force by ep 8" - that was for LAST SEASON. And we all know how that turned out.
"We weren't trying to ignore any of the characters'? - she's also an idiot. Because it was completely obvious to anyone that's exactly what they DID. Why do you think they brought back Amber? Because the new team & 13 in particular is a disaster & this is a last ditch effort to make sure the huge number of C&C fans actually watch the show this season.
| Jul 18, 2008 3:08:31 AM | #I'll admit to feeling very burned by Season 4 and the number of misleading statements about Cam and Chase returning in "full capacity", however, the fact that this a spoiler a specific episode gives me cautious optimism- at least for this episode.
Now if KJ and DS would just realize that Thirteen is a most annoying and cliche character and kindly drop her off the nearest cliff, then all would be well with House world.
Michelle | Jul 18, 2008 6:20:55 AM | #I have a real hard time believing anything coming out of this woman's mouth. They're once again pandering to fans by doing one episode that focuses on Chase and Cameron. Then it's back to boring old 13. Why anyone would want to watch that whiny little beyotch is beyond me.
My personal opinion is that Hugh knows the writing is crap and has already packed his bags to go back home.
I hold Katie personally responsible for the downfall of this once-great show.
