Emmy Nods - You, Me & A Few Nominees Sound Off

By Korbi Ghosh

July 17, 01:39 PM

Conniebrittonkylechandler_fridaynig So, the verdict is in, and though the list of nomination finalists announced last month was somewhat heartening, this morning's news left a few of my favorites behind...

First of all, no Friday Night Lights. Fine, I knew it was a long shot, but to leave Connie Britton off the short list and then snub Kyle Chandler and the show as well makes me mad. And though we all love that William Shatner, I was upset to see my boy Blair Blair Underwood omitted from the Best Supporting Actor In A Drama Series race. Tough category, no doubt, but I have to believe Underwood's moving work in In Treatment was more deserving. Also, leaving Battlestar Galactica's Mary McDonnell out of the party is uncool. I mean...

I won't even get into my anger over the lack of Big Love love, and let's not talk about The Wire not making the list.

Tinyfeytinafeyk_s2_240 Still, I'm psyched for repeat nominees Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin, because they are so immensely talented. What up to SNL 's Amy Poehler as well -- very pleasant surprise -- and her hilarious husband, Mr. Will Arnett, who got a nod for his guest role on 30 Rock (the short-robed Devon Banks, oh boy!) Also great to see Rainn Wilson and Neil Patrick Harris' names again. God willing, the second time is a charm for one of them. We can't have the same dude taking that prize home every September.

Michaelchall3_dexter_240 High fives to everyone in the Mad Men and Damages families, though those nods are no surprise. The well-deserved Dexter nomination (yay for Michael C. Hall, too!) also calls for champagne.

Great to see Lost back in contention, and Grey's Anatomy falling by the wayside. I'm not saying Grey's is a bad show, but it should not get Emmy noms year after year just because so many people watch it. Many people watch Deal or No Deal too, doesn't mean Howie Mandel is getting his tux dry-cleaned.

Kristinchenoweth_pushingdaisies_240 What else? I'm thrilled for Ms. Olive Snook, aka Kristin Chenoweth, who is the brightest spot in the already very-bright Pushing Daisies. Always humble, this morning she said, "I feel so honored to be nominated and am so happy for the show and their 12 nominations. I have been trying not to pay attention to the predictions so I was completely shocked and surprised."

Jeansmart_samiam_240 Also exciting is the recognition of Samantha Who's Jean Smart, who, what can I say, I've always had a thing for. Reacting to the news today, she told me, "I'm really happy, incredibly flattered and surprised! I am working out of state right now and forgot they were being announced this morning! I'm especially excited that [my co-star and fellow nominee] Christina [Applegate] and I can go dress hunting together." Christina, who says she's incredibly grateful and honored to be included is a fellow Jean Smart fan: "I'm over the moon for her. She is such a sublime talent."

So, now it's time for you to talk. Any surprises? Snubs that make you sad? Sound off in the comment section on your Emmy feelings...

Sadly, Howie Mandel IS getting that tux dry-cleaned - Outstanding Host Reality/Reality Competition. See? Every category has that "WTF??" nominee!

The surprise I've seen the least reaction to is the snubbing of Phil Keough for reality host. Tom Bergeron instead? Bizarre. I've got my full recap at nomadreader.blogpost.com

John Krasinski was ROBBED!

The Grey's Anatomy season finale was amazing and I am sad that it got snubbed. At least I can still root for Dexter in the Drama category! and for Mary Louise in the Best Actress in a Comedy Category!!!!

According to Jim got a nom for a behind-the-scenes category. (I think.) This constitutes as a WTF? moment.

Hooray!! So glad to read your take on things Korbi because you're not just a reporter but you are a true t.v. fan as well...and speaking of "fans reporting", give any more thought about me helping you out on Emmy Night as a Canadian connection correspondant!? Hmm?!?!! ;)

I'm exceedingly happy for Neil Patrick Harris (who is carrying the flag for the brilliant HIMYM gang) and Rainn Wilson (who is also brilliant and can handle the defeat by NPH...or better yet, be glorious in a tie with him!!!) Also, kudos to Steve Carell, Lee Pace, Kristin Chenoweth, Jean Smart, and Christina Applegate (wow...so many great people in the same catagories...who will I root for?!!) Also big congrats to John Slattery and, yes, I am just going to say it, Jeff Probst!!

I am disappointed to not see any recognition for the INCREDIBLE Eli Stone cast nor anything big for Scrubs or ER.

One last thing, I think that she is deserving of many accolades but how can Amy Poehler be nominated in the "Best Supporting Actress, Comedy" when SNL is up for "Best Musical, Variety, or Comedy"...isn't she in the wrong catagory?!

Oh, and shoutout to Shatner (go Canada!!) but there was a serious error made somewhere when Sarah Chalke didn't get a nod for HIMYM!!!

How can I take these 'awards' seriously when 'The Wire' gets smoked in the Outstanding Drama category? I don't understand.

I am VERY pleased to see both HOUSE and HUGH LAURIE in the mix. If there is a GOD, PLEASE let HUGH win this year. He works so hard on HOUSE what with the accent change, the cane, and being in nearly every scene.
He truly deserves an EMMY for the past four seasons.
CONGRATS to all at HOUSE!!

WE LOVE YOU, HUGH!!

I'm over my anger about The Wire being left out in the cold once again, simply b/c I expected the snub, but how in the world does Cat Deeley not get nominated - let alone being the defacto winner - of the best reality show host category?

Rishi | Jul 18, 2008 12:38:48 AM | #

here here, Rishi. Cat Deeley is EEEEEASILY the best reality TV show host working today. She's a total pro, a natural, lovely to look at AND listen to... both on TV and in person.

I'm so glad that Damages and Glenn Close were both nominated. That series is wonderful and Close is so perfect in the role. I am so so gald that Amazing race got a nod again. IMHO it is the best reality shows hands down. Too bad the snubbed Phil. :( Every year someone has to be snubbed.

YEAH HOUSE AND HUGH! Both deserve to win!

I'm disappointed Robert Sean Leonard and Lisa Edelstein weren't nominated but if House wins best drama - as it should! - I'll get over it.

No WIRE? BULLSHIT

Love seeing Dexter and Mad Men in there, but leaving out David Duchovny for Californication? That's crazy. The man won the Golden Globe for a reason. He is brilliant on that show!

Kate | Jul 19, 2008 9:00:56 AM | #

Glad to see some of the new shows made it.......congrats to Mad Men & Damages. Ted Danson & Glenn Close both were great, both gave chilling performances. The best and most surprising is Bryan Cranston with Breaking Bad, not exactly a popular show, no one I knew watched it. But his amazing performance as the meth-dealing teacher with cancer made you forget the goofy Hal from Malcolm.......and kudos to his bravery of appearing in white underpants!

What pictures does David Kelley have that gets Boston Legal, Spader and Shatner nominated over and over again? It's a decent show, but better shows have been nudged out of noms because of this.
