'Supernatural' To Add New Recurring Characters

By Korbi Ghosh

June 24, 02:10 PM

Katiecassidy_supernatural_240 With the filming of Supernatural's fourth season set to begin soon, producers are now looking to cast a couple of recurring characters that could shake things up a bit.

I'm told that a girl named Kristy -- in her 20s, sexy, snarky and adept at adjusting to any and every situation -- will come aboard in the season premiere and stick around through at least episode five.

Castiel -- a dude in his 30s or 40s, charismatic, calm and very good at getting people's attention -- will also be introduced in the premiere and will probably stick around for some time.

Any thoughts on these new characters? Casting suggestions? Think you'll welcome them more warmly than Bela and Ruby (Katie Cassidy, photo, left)?

I actually liked Ruby. Bela was eh, but Ruby, I liked her and I liked the interactions she had with the brothers. Really sad to see Katie leave the show. As for Kristy...can I volunteer to play her? Not that I'm an actress or anything, lol ;-)

They handled Ruby and Bela totally wrong. Katie Cassidy was totally overacting and one dimensional in her stance and reactions. They should have never had Bela shoot Sam or always one up the guys.
I actually liked Jo so let's hope they write the new characters so we can appreciate them.

I loved Ruby. I know the actress can't come back because that body died in the finale but they should bring the character back. Bela was just not a good fit for some reason

I didn't care for Ruby at first, but she grew on me. I will miss her. Bela, I could take or leave. I miss Henrickson (snarky FBI man) and Gordon, until he went vengeful. The show needs more color. Maybe an African Amer., Puerto Rican, Asian or Latino/Latina unknown. (Bela and Ruby were unknowns, as were Henrickson (?spelling) and Gordon. And they were all enjoyable characters. I trust the show's casting.

Have they learned NOTHING? It seeems very clear that the fans are quite content with the characters they already have ... every time they try to introduce a female recurring character (ostensibly as either a future love interest or protaganist) they have enormous negative fan backlash ... and yet, they have repeatedly done away with the recurring characters we universally DO like .. are the producers or studio *bigwigs* TRYING to destroy the show? We DONT CARE about *new recurring characters* and if anything, it makes us (the fans) LESS excited about the new season ... we want to see a show about Dean and Sam --- not about male fantasy hormone-inspiried cast additions that make the main characters look like bumbling idiots. This is not Guilligan's Island ...

For the most part, agree with SPN Browncoat, although I found the male character with the mullet that was a genius but humerous who they killed off along with almost everyone else in Ellie's(?) bar at the end of the second season very funny. Every show on TV has a seductive female in it. This show is unique in that the 'beauties' are the male leads. Don't ruin it and make it just like almost every other show on TV. Besides, the guys do fine on their own and it's nice to have the story get wrapped up each week.

I hate it when they introduce new characters. I don't like any of the recurring female characters. They need to learn from their mistakes and just keep it like the first season, with just the brothers. I didn't like Ellen or Jo in the second season. And I didn't like Ruby or Bela in the third season. For the fourth season it should just be the brothers and Bobby. Bobby is one of my favorite characters besides the brothers.

I think that we should wait and see what the characters are about before anyone dislikes them. We know that we're supposed to see a supernatural entity that we've never met before...so that means that it should either be the girl or the guy or it could be both.

We also know that Rufus is going to come back. With the budget cuts we're not liable to see anyone else other than Bobby with the boys for most of the season.

I'm going to agree with SPN Browncoat here also. I thought since they let go of Ruby and Bela we'd finally be getting our show back like it was in Season 1 but nope I guess not. After reading spoilers for Kristy it seems to me they are making the same mistake yet again.

Meg | Jun 24, 2008 10:15:21 PM | #

I guess I am going against the crowd here. I liked Ruby and Bela. I wished they would have stayed around for season 4.

David | Jun 24, 2008 10:55:25 PM | #

Bela was a bad character played by a good actress. Ruby was a great character played by a bad actress. Thus neither one worked & I'm glad both are gone. Demon Ruby can easily show up in another body. I agree with much of what SPN Browncoat said. Kripke promised a return to the basics of Season 1, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. After learning from their mistakes with Jo, Bela & Ruby, they certainly can't be repeating those mistakes with Kristy (who sounds a lot like Ruby in the sides). I'll wait and see before making any final judgments. Hopefully they'll be smart and not make Kristy just another Barbie to replace Ruby who replaced Jo. As long as the focus remains on Sam & Dean, then I'm not worried... at least not yet!

I agree with those that are sick and tired of the PTBs deciding that sexy females are a must for this show. This show had Ellen, a strong female character that could have worked, but she wasn't sexy enough, whatever that means. This show has two hot male leads and really, why add to the mix when it's perfect?

Now, I don't mind recurring, as long as they're not recurring in every episode or even every other episode. If they come maybe 6 episodes tops, I don't mind. The story is about Dean and Sam, not the supernatural club. Give us what you promised Kripke, the story of Sam and Dean.

Castiel does sound interesting and of course Kristy is Ruby. As long as they don't take over the show, like Bela and the original Ruby were starting to, I don't mind. And please, this time get an actress who can act to play Ruby! Gina Torres would be great. Now there's a woman that is sexy as well as play badass.

So, Kripke, don't over do it again with the females, or the males for that matter. Remember the KISS principle, it works best.

It would take a lot for me not to watch "Supernatural", and as long as Dean and Sam's chemistry and good writing remains the focus, I'm okay with adding a few new characters here and there. I'm just thrilled that Bela is gone. I just could not stand that girl.

Kerri | Jun 25, 2008 5:28:58 AM | #

female, 20s, and snarky? I'd definitely like to see Kristen Bell - she's got a way with snarky!

AndreaC | Jun 25, 2008 5:48:59 AM | #

Well, if Kristy is "Meg 2.0" from Season 1, then I say GREAT! Meg was the only well-written well-acted evil female Kripke has been able to do. (Though Meg isn't dead, so just bring HER back in another meatsuit). Ruby the demon isn't dead, so they had better resolve that storyline though -without Katie Cassidy's meatsuit is fine with me).

I just hope Kripke doesn't waste his budget on recurring characters and then get his season and episodes cut down from 22 though.

For the new male guest star, I see Alex O
Loughlin in the role. He's smart, sexy and available now.

Sonja Matulka | Jun 25, 2008 7:20:13 AM | #

I must be in the minority here. While I hated Jo because they kept forcing her on Dean, I liked Ruby because she gave us information about Mary's past and in some episodes she appeared like she was seeking redemption. I wish they hadn't killed the female demon from Sin City. I liked her a lot.

I liked Bela because she was just as good, if not better than the guys. The only other hunter as good as the boys was Gordon and he is dead. Every other hunter is written as an idiot. (The couple from the 7 deadly sins) The writers just kept her secret from us way too long, probably because of the writer's strike. Had they begun to hint at it just a little, she would've been even better and probably more sympathetic.

Momof2 | Jun 25, 2008 7:32:23 AM | #

i love ruby and i actually think that kristy may be ruby, just in a new meatsuit. there's sides out at nowcasting.com and from what she says, thats what it sounds like to me.

shannon | Jun 25, 2008 8:24:25 AM | #

I think it was a wise decision to let Katie Cassidy go. First because she was a bad actress and made Ruby completely charmless and second because if they had to keep her to the same contract as last year, then they would have to insert Ruby into 12 episodes whether it made sense for the story or not. This way, Kristy, whether she's Ruby or not, can be used when it makes sense for the story.

For the record I really liked Lauren Cohan as Bela and thought the character had great potential. But I think the writers really screwed up by deliberately dumbing the boys down around her and making her too unsympathetic and unredeemable way too early in the story.

I was never a huge fan of Jo or Ellen or Ash for that matter and I think Alona Tal was just miscast for the role.

Castiel is a very, very intriguing character and could just as easily be played by a female I would imagine. Someone mentioned Gina Torres and I think that would kick ass for this role. Hey Nathan Fillion would work too.

All in all, I am very, very excited for next season.

Oh my god, it's Mary Sue Disaster Version 3.0. Have they learned NOTHING at all? Are they crazy.

Sexy, snarky, can adapt to any and every situation? How is this not a Mary Sue? I don't care if she's really Ruby in a meatsuit, Ruby wasn't that great the first time around. And she's going to be there for the 1st five episodes at least? What happened to no Scooby Gangs riding around in the Impala?

Demons should not be able to seek redemption. They are demons.

I really liked Ruby. I was not a fan of Bella, but I though Ruby was a good fit with the guys. She gave alot of insight into their characters without becoming a romantic interest, and I wanted her to stick around.
I'll give these new characters a chance before I make an uninformed opinion.

Melissa | Jun 25, 2008 11:46:54 AM | #

The new characters sound great. You have to mix things up or the same fans who insist that Sam and Dean need to be in every scene would be complaining how boring and stale the show has become. You *must* have recurring characters. Jensen and Jared cannot work 15 hour days indefinitely. That's physically and emotionally exhausting. If those fans had their way, we'd have never had John, Bobby, Meg, or Ellen. "Kristi" is probably Ruby anyway. A local Canadian actress is probably less expensive than Cassidy.

I thought maybe that had learned something from last season's disasters, but judging by Kristy's description, apparently not. I have no problem with recurring strong female characters, but they have to be well written, and so far SN seems to be hit and miss for that.
I'm hoping any recurring characters they have are kept to a minimum. Less is more. Part of my problem with Ruby and Bela, is that it was to much to soon. I want to be eased into new characters, not slapped in the face with them.
Castiel does sound interesting however.

Alex | Jun 25, 2008 12:22:34 PM | #

I like both Ruby and Bela and I hope there will be updates on the 2 of them - is Bela roasting in Hell - is Ruby truly dead, etc. I look forward to the next season and trust the creators will do their best with the characters and scripts. I sure hope Sam and Bobby can rescue Dean from Hell ASAP. I hope we see more of Bobby. It must be hard for the 2 main actors to carry the show and every scene every week - I'll bet they appreciate some more characters to interact with.
