'October Road's' Josh Appelbaum Paves The Way For a Finale
Although we've come to the end of the Road, Josh Appelbaum, his writing partners, the viewers (me, included), we just can't let it go. Despite the team behind October Road already scoring a new gig -- running ABC's remake of the BBC's Life on Mars -- they have not forgotten their promise to give OR's dedicated fans the resolution we desire.
"We got the call that the show was cancelled on Tuesday at 9:45 in the morning," Appelbaum told me today, "And by 10 o'clock at night, me and [co-executive producers] Scott [Rosenberg] and Dre [Nemec] were writing the finale. It's sort of like therapy for us, but the most important thing is that it means closure for the fans."
Apparently, everyone in the cast, from Bryan Greenberg to Penny Johnson feels the same. "I called each one of them and they were all just unbelievably gracious," Appelbaum shared. "I went down the list and said, you know, we're planning on doing this thing, and every person said, just tell me when and where and I'll be there."
The details? It will likely be in three parts, run about 15 minutes long and pick up where the show left off, answering the question of who Sam's father is and what the fate of each relationship will be. "Separate from even knowing who Sam's father is, we've always known how we wanted to end the series," said Appelbaum. "Whether the show went two years or seven years, there's always been a particular moment and peice of closure that we wanted and we're going to be able to get to that intended end."
Appelbaum promises that all the other storylines will be tied up as well -- from Janet and Eddie to the Commander's health, from Aubrey and Ronnie to Physical Phil's great fears -- because the fans deserve that: "The nice thing about this whole experience is that this show about friendship has created an environment of friendship and community among the cast. And when we look at the message boards, we feel like that's sort of extended to our viewership too. We're happy to do this for them."
Whether the 15-minute finale will air on YouTube, be sold on DVD or dropped from the sky by carrier pigeons has not yet been decided. But one way or another, Roadies, take heart. You will get to hang out in Knight's Ridge once last time.
You rock Korbi! Thanks for taking care of this for us!
Tracey | May 14, 2008 5:13:34 PM | #WOOOHOOO!! even though this is NOT what we wanted for the show, or how to get our "closure," this sort of makes the pain a little less painful. i just hope it is not too far down the road for us fans...
Jackie | May 14, 2008 6:01:55 PM | #Thank you, once again, Korbi for your continuous support of October Road AND for keeping us in touch with the plans to give us the conclusion, the answers, we so desire. We're not done fighting. But it's nice to know that if we don't succeed, we are so lucky to have a creative team behind October Road that cares about the fans enough to give us our answers. Thank you again Korbi and thank you to the wonderful cast, crew and creative team at October Road. We are so glad to have had the chance to enjoy this one of a kind wonderful tv show!
DreamerRoad | May 14, 2008 6:04:05 PM | #Thank you so much for the update Korbi! As always, you rock. Please keep us posted!
Ashley (id4_girl) | May 14, 2008 6:05:36 PM | #Thanks for the report. I was thinking of a 2 or 4 hour finale...but I'll take 15 minutes..if that's what we get. Bummer, great, great show....
Betty | May 14, 2008 6:06:02 PM | #Thanks for the information. As sad and disapointed I am that ABC decided to drop October Road I look forward to getting this closure.
Amy | May 14, 2008 6:11:48 PM | #Thanks for this post Korbi. The writers, cast and crew are just awesome to know they couldn't leave us hanging. They also know we are not giving up on this show. We are working harder than ever to bring it back so it can be played out in the way intended. The Pay October Road Forward campaign still runs strong and donations are still happening. New fans are coming aboard. So, just to let anyone else out there know, the fight is not done. Join in the campaign. You can find everything you need to help at the following link:

Hoodehoo Roadies!
Deb (avongal) | May 14, 2008 6:12:17 PM | #Korbi,
Thank you so much for keeping all of us diehard Roadies in the loop. Sadly, we were hoping for a Season Three, but if this is all we get than I'm okay with that! I'm just so glad that we will find out the answers to all of our burning questions. Thanks Again!
Amy | May 14, 2008 6:16:46 PM | #Whoop!
Should have known they wouldn't let us down. We think OR is in our blood but these guys have LIVED it for years. Can't wait to see what they have in store. Glad all the cast is on board!
Sure wish we could have a weekly installment but we may have to settle for this. OR would fit in nicely with the CW, Lifetime, Oxygen, etc. & we haven't given up hope.
Roadie29 | May 14, 2008 6:18:47 PM | #Thank you Korbi, still can't believe they would cancel show like this. But there is hope once again on the OR message board that we will bring our show back.I just purchased another October Road DVD and will donate it to our library tomorrow. And there is lot more going on to bring OR back.So if someone want's to check OR Message board at ABC you are more than velcome to join us!We are not ready to let go of OR and ABC will hear from us.Thank you again and stay tune Marta
Marta | May 14, 2008 6:20:46 PM | #While I am happy that you are somehow, someway chosing to "end" the show properly I am SO SAD that the show has ended! I loved the plot, the characters, it was honestly one of my favorites shows on TV....It saddens me how quickly shows are taken off the air now...this is a fantastic show that should have be able to continue to shine. OR had so much life left in it and will truely be missed by all us roadies
Randi | May 14, 2008 6:27:19 PM | #Thank you for the information Korbi. You have been on top of the October Road saga better than anyone else and trust me I have checked all of the sites.
Thank you so much to the writers/producers and cast of October Road you brought us a wonderful gem of a show and it will live on, somehow. Thank you for bringing us the closure and resolution we need. It will be bittersweet but it is greatly appreciated. I don't know how to accept the season 2 finale as the series finale???
In my opinion ABC should help you out with a finale but I now have a better understand of how they operate and how they view their fans. Maybe MTV will pick it up like they did with "My So Called Life" and make this show the hit I know it could be.
Forever a loyal October Road Fan,
Bella
Thank you so much for this! While it's not another season, it is the closure all of the Roadies want.
Tiffany | May 14, 2008 6:35:35 PM | #This is good to hear, sad but good. If I could make a couple suggestions, wait a little while to put out the closure because we are still trying to get the show back on the air. Second, if we could get it put out on dvd that would be great, maybe even on the season 2 dvd, just so we can watch it over and over if we have to. Anyway thanks to everyone who worked on this show, it is truly amazing!
Amanda | May 14, 2008 6:39:42 PM | #I am glad that the people involved in the show are keeping us fans in mind. I am very disappointed that the network couln't find the heart to do so. I will take more October Road any way I can get it.
tbfor18 | May 14, 2008 7:48:38 PM | #Wow. The executive producers, writers, and cast all seem like such amazing people. They respect their fans so much. This show means a lot to me, and I am so glad we will get some closure, all though it's a poor substitute for the continuation of the show itself. I can't wait to see it though. My eyes misted up just trying to guess what the ending will be. I've loved this show and I've loved being a "Roadie." Thank you all.
Alison | May 14, 2008 8:17:14 PM | #Korbi,as always, thanks for thinking enough of the fans to keep us in the loop, it is greatly appreciated. I do however feel that this news is bitter-sweet, as all of the Roadies have fought long and hard for Season 3, it seems a little pathetic to reduce this show to a clip on YouTube. Shame on ABC for letting down the fans who have fought so hard for this brilliant little show. I really don't want them to profit off of any closure shows! Many thanks to the writers/producers and of course the wonderful actors who put their hearts and souls into this show, at least we had two good seasons! Being a part of the fight to save this show has been amazing, what a wonderful bunch of folks out there, Long Live October Road, and Long Live the Roadies!
Jane(Csaamom) | May 14, 2008 8:45:40 PM | #Thank you Korbi for such a fine article. I am happy that they want to give us closure, but I am not ready to give up on October Road coming back on for another season. I will not back down and I know a whole slew of us that are not ready to!! So we hope all others will jump on the bandwagon with us and fight for this show to come back, call other networks and abc and tell them you need October Road back on the air.
Thanks. Donna (one of the many Roadies!!)
donna | May 14, 2008 8:52:49 PM | #Thanks for doing this. But what can we do to get this show back on the air, or is it too late? I mean come they did it with Jericho why can't we do it with OR?
Jaimie | May 14, 2008 9:02:48 PM | #Thanks for the update Korbi...I will be checking back to see when and where those pigeons will be dropping the finale! ;)
Thank you to all involved in the show for giving us an ending...though we fans are all so sad that the ending has had to come so soon and like this!
Thank you especially for giving us closure for all of the characters...though it is important to find out who Sam's father is, all of the people of Knight's Ridge are important and us Roadies love and care about each and every one of them. So thanks for focusing on Ronnie, Physical Phil, Pizza Girl, and Owen too...and please, please, PLEASE let Janet and Eddie find their way happily back to each other! (with maybe a sweet girl in the wings for Rooster too?!)
Remembering always "what goes on" and thank you for all that did go on on this fantastic television show!
Kath (canakaty) | May 14, 2008 9:15:40 PM | #This show was one of my favorites. I loved the town, the leaves, the bar. It just gave me a warm cozy feeling. This show was messed up by abc from the beginning with the airtimes, running half seasons and all that. With all the crap on tv, this good show gets the boot. I thank the writers for working on a ending for us. But this still sucks...........

Kris | May 14, 2008 10:07:17 PM | #Thanks for the update Korbi. I was hoping for an actual hour long episode, but hey if we get a resolution, then I really can't complain. Even thought its only 15 minutes that is better than nothing at all.
Shannon | May 15, 2008 6:14:49 AM | #Thanks for the update Korbi. So sad it's come to this, but glad to hear we'll get resolution. Wonderful that the creators aren't just leaving us out on a lurch!
Melissa | May 15, 2008 7:33:07 AM | #Korbi, thanks for the update. I'm really looking forward to some closure. I'm a little confused about the time though. Are each of the three installments 15 minutes? Or is the whole thing 15 minutes? Seems like a lot of material to cover in 15 minutes...
