Thrilla From Wasilla: Lisa Kelly on 'IRT: Deadliest Roads'

Today's cuppa: "donut-shop-blend" coffee (no, it's not Dunkin' Donuts blend, which isn't the same unless you buy fresh-brewed it at the drive-thru, which I can't do in L.A. *sniff*)

irt-deadliest-roads-rick-yemm-bio.jpgOn Sunday, Dec. 5, History airs the season-one finale of "IRT: Deadliest Roads," which pit three North American truckers (actually four, since Canadian Alex Debogorski quit after a day) against the traffic, weather and precipitous roads of the Himalayas in northern India.

The remaining drivers are Canadian Rick Yemm (left), who's also been featured on History's "Ice Road Truckers," Alabama driver and TV newcomer Dave Redmon (right), and Lisa Kelly (below, left), who joined "Ice Road Truckers" when it shiftedirt-deadliest-roads-dave-redmon.jpg location from Canada to the Dalton Highway of Alaska.

Kelly is possibly the most famous resident of Wasilla, Alaska, not named Palin -- Kelly has said she's not acquainted with the city's former mayor, and the state's former governor, Sarah Palin, who has a TLC show of her own -- and the diminutive trucker has earned points for her toughness, tenacity and ability to work around her lack of physical size and big muscles when it comes to fixing her truck or getting herself out of scrapes.

With her blond-streaked hair, Kelly has attracted a lot of attention on the roads of India over the run of the series. She's learned some hard lessons in overcoming her fears and asserting herself, not only in a male-dominated profession but also in a very different society.

IRT_Deadliest_Roads_Lisa_Kelly_2.jpgIt hasn't been easy for any of the North American truckers, as they struggled with cultural and language barriers, rickety bridges, wood-framed trucks, horrendous traffic, dangerous storms, mudslides, rockslides, lack of pavement, lack of passing room, and the ever-present danger of getting a few inches too close to the edge and plunging down steep cliffs to their deaths (as frequently irt-deadliest-roads_small_150x100.jpgdepicted in the Thom Beers Graphics of Doom).

Kelly was kind enough to answer a few email questions from HCTV about her experiences (no word yet on whether there'll be another season of "IRT: Deadliest Roads." but never count out executive producer Thom Beers -- he's always thinking).

Without further ado, Lisa Kelly ...

Q: Knowing what you know now, would you do this again?

A: I would go to India again, if I knew what I do now. I knew I was in for an education of a lifetime, and that it was something that shouldn't be passed up.

Q: Which moment were you most afraid?

A: I was most afraid when a dump truck went off the cliff an hour before I got there (and the person inside had died), and then I had to move over at the same exact spot to let another dump truck by.

Q: What did you learn from this experience?

A: I learned how most of the world lives, (so) I learned how lucky I am, and how spoiled weThumbnail image for IRT_Deadliest_Roads_Lisa_Kelly_3.jpg can be and act.

Q: What were your best and worst decisions?

A: I feel life is a series of decisions and I honestly made the best choice with the information I was given. I would most likely make all the same choices over again. I didn't regret anything.

Q: How happy were you to be driving in North America again?

A: I was very appreciative to be in the U.S. again. I had a harder time adjusting to the right-hand driving again, but I loved how quiet the roads were, and how I could just crank my tunes while driving alone. I have a much higher tolerance now for drivers here.

Lisa, My husband and I started watching you on Ice Road Truckers and then followed you on the History channel when you went to India. We were so worried about you but it looks like we had nothing to worry about. You did a great job.

We were just wondering if you were able to bring the little puppy home to the states with you.

We can't wait for Ice Road Truckers to start back up again. We look forword to watching your adventures.

Nancy Crites

What happened her dog?

yes . . . how is the dog doing?

yes! what happened to the puppy????

Yes, Lisa, I too have been wondering if you were able to bring that adorable puppy back home to the USA? He would really love being with you and the family of animals you have at your place. Please keep up updated on that little pup. He is so cute and loving.

Lisa posted on her site that the puppy has a good home in warm and sunny Southern California, Hollywood to be exact. The puppy, now a young dog will have a very happy life.

Lisa , you have earned the repect on many. Your determination and drive are above and beyond. Not to mention your great driving skills both on the Ice Road and in the Himilaya's
Over the years I have had many truck drivers work for me with a few female drivers.

The female drivers are by far better than most male drivers. The female drivers are more careful , pay attention to the surroundings and don't break things.

Keep up the good work and we look forward to seeing the next season of I.R.T.

Lisa:
Your decision to deliver all that fuel on the finale of the first (?) season of IRT: Deadliest Roads was one of the gutsiest things on TV and shows the courage, determination and goodheartedness which make you one of the most interesting people to watch. If you can stand it, it is possible that you will be a role model for girls who presently can only think of being "princesses" and waiting for Prince Charming!
My husband and I don't miss IRT if possible and can't wait to see what you do next. And our thanks to the producers who really hit a home run when they selected you for both series.

Lisa I am following your progress on IRT TV series, I admire you, If I will go back on time I will choose your work, As a trucker you see mother nature and will life wherever you go, as a Alaskan you are very familiar with mother natura, I am from Mexico plase make comments related to will lifew you see, love you Rafaek

Dear Lisa.

I was imprssed how calm and positive you were in each situation compared to your co drivers. Thank you for the ride and thank you for bringing the pup with you. It is so nice to see a positive TV show instead of the usual sex and violence trash. I don't think India is on my next travel schedule

I just got my Commercial License renewed after 33 years of CDL licenses. There's no way in hell I would do what you have done. You have my respect. I also don't mind saying you are beautiful as hell and I like to look at you! When you get to be an old fart, you can say stuff like that.

I wish to compliment Lisa for taking the high road (no pun intended) in India (the guy's vocabulary made them look like the Ugly Americans!) Like everyone else, I also wonder if she was able to bring the puppy home. I would hate to think it had to stay in India without her.

brave people in the world

Lisa, I just think you are totally amazing! Rock on!

Great Job Lisa! My mom died in 1987, and drove trucks. I think your mom and dad must have been great! You are a great inspiration for all women everywhere
! I want my Ivy League daughter to see your accomplishment in India. My wife and I watched all day IRC in India biting our nails. To see you by pass the bridge and just fly through that river to provide helicopter fuel was not only inspiring but damn beautiful. Kathy and I are so proud of you! You are the Guru of trucking, We both bow to you and your abilities.

Hey folks! I live in Canada but I was born in India. Part of my family comes from the area where these series was shot. I never grew up there but still spent enough time in india to fully relate to the experience IRT team had in so many ways. :) I feel sad things are still so tough for people there as they were almost 20 yrs ago. I am disappointed how the traffic and people take so many risks and how they made things difficult for Dave, Rick and Lisa. I am glad they all made it back alive including their crew. An awesome reality show. I can't wait for the DVD to come out. Is there any plans for IRT DR hats/merchandise coming out? :)

I see they have a new women on the new season of Ice Road truckers. Wonder if she will make it pretty does not make a truckers but a trucker can be pretty

It's a great girl.I want like she goes ahead with the show Deadliest roads or Ice road truckers.

I like the show since the first time I watch it

Dave Redmon is a *****.
If you really want to prove yourself try running loads in Iraq, Afghanistan, or Pakistan.
He talks a lot of BS but is a lot of blow...IRT is a nice fit...lots of DRAMA...Dave Readmon=Drama Queen.
All too fake!!!

I 'd say she's the greatest- women driver- of the world .really she ' s amezing driver when I watch him on t.v, she had driving on ,off road , that s was unbelivable..nice. lisa ..I seen every time when u had drive the Indan truck ..!!!
