'The Celebrity Apprentice': The one where everyone leaves
Here at Zap2it, we're fond of a good WTF moment. Still, did we really need an entire "Celebrity Apprentice" episode full of them? When Rod Blagojevich went home last week, we figured things would get... well, a little less weird. That was not the case.Trump dished out a healthy helping of hypocrisy tonight. Sharon Osbourne has been ill throughout the season, so she sat out for this challenge. Additionally, Cyndi Lauper had to go to Washington D.C. to meet with President Obama and congratulate him on passing the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Amendment.
Of course, these aren't exactly dog-ate-my-homework excuses. Still, when Michael Johnson had to go home to take care of a personal matter pertaining to his son, Trump told him not to bother coming back. "People will be fired in between," Trump said. "That's not fair to the rest of the team." Uh, people were fired in Sharon's absence, too. On "America's Next Top Model," the girls have to compete whether they're sick or not.
The challenge was to create two commercials -- a 30-second spot and a 10-second spot -- for Right Guard Total Defense deodorant. The women went for a spot targeted at kids who are experiencing their first "funk." They brought Scottie Pippen in to play the "Funky Godfather" -- complete with a jingle that Holly Robinson-Peete described as having a "blaxploitation" feel. We can't get it out of our heads.
As part of the presentation, the women described their first hints of funk. Cyndi called in from the White House to describe her son's time in the locker room and his first experience with "the big P." Puberty, folks. She was talking about puberty. Unfortunately, none of the women were listening to a word she said. When she finished talking, there was radio silence. "Hello? Hello?" she squawked.
Finally, Summer heard her. "Good job, Cyndi! Bye!"
Meanwhile, the men's team was struggling. Bret Michaels was distracted by a devastating phone call. His daughter was being tested for diabetes, which Bret has struggled with for most of his life. We were actually moved when Bret started to cry as he talked about her.
In the board room, the men won despite the fact that their commercial didn't actually seem to make a whole lot of sense. They had a better target audience and they made the effort to make two separate ads instead of just editing their longer one to make their shorter one. It's a good thing, too, because they definitely can't afford to lose anyone else (and we don't want to see Curtis leave)!
Up until now, the women have been relatively diplomatic with each other in the board room. Tensions are mounting, though! Maria's claws came out in the board room tonight - she had an answer for every shot Holly took at her. We're glad trump fired Selita for not being tough enough, because we can't wait for Holly and Maria to go another round next week.

Let me get this straight- Sharon its out, Cyndi sits out, yet when Michael Johnson attempts to sit out The Donald pitches a hissy and won't let him return?? Shouldn't they ALL have been sent home? Another clear-cut example of Trump's omgoing bias in favor of women... especially his golden favorites of Osborne and Lauper/
The way I took it, Trump (and Michael) expected Michael to be gone for awhile and that 3, 4 or maybe more people could be fired before he's back. Sharon, on the other hand, has only missed this one task so far (I know she's been sick for most of the show so far, but I believe this is the only task she completely missed - someone please correct me if I'm wrong on that), so I think Trump is willing to cut her some slack, hoping she'll be back soon. However, I think if she starts missing task after task, he'll fire her too.
what did holly robinson pete mean when she said she was going to have to play the black card
I totally agree that the Men's ad, while kind of raggedy around the edges, was a better spot. It was clear that the product was long lasting and effective --attributes that the Right Guard suits needed to be stressed. And they did follow the rule about the 10-second spot being different from the :30.
I disagree that the women's spot focused on the Mom; she was only in one short scene. But I thought their spot was vague and didn't hit strongly enough on product identification. It made it seem like Scotty Pippen was the product, not the Right Guard.
And that's my Monday morning two cents.
What the sponsor seemed to forget though is in their targeted demographic of 13-18 year old boys - WHO is actually clipping the coupons and buying the deoderant for the family? Mom. The women seemed to understand that fact. Mom is going to buy what she wants regardless of teenage son's like or dislike of a commercial. He will be told - buy your own if you don't like it. BTW - Trump is an ***.
Mary sounds like a mom I wouldn't want to have. What kind of mother would tell her son "Nope, I'm not getting the deodorant you want. I'm buying whatever appeals to ME!" Seriously?
thanks for seeing the trump hypocrisy. i tried to tell that to a friend and he kept saying he was sure there was a discussion btw trump and michael off camera that convinced trump to not let him come back. puh leeze. then show it cause it looked funky.
jason, michael said he would like to come back AND that he would know more about his situation once he landed. since he left right after that, it doesn't take 24 hours to get home and access the situation. cyndy and sharon were both gone 24 hrs. sharon missed a task. michael hadn't. trump should have allowed michael to get back 2 him before he made a decision. and even if michael missed a task before he came back, that is no different that given sharon a 2nd chance.
I didnt know who half of these people were from go - but last night, okay I will give Sharon a pass for one episode if she is really sick but Cindy chose to go to DC - it wasnt a mandatory appearance that she had a prior contract to appear at - she made her choice to absent herself and she should have been thrown off. Its one thing if they have a performance scheduled ahead of time and Donald and their team know ahead of time but she just wanted to be there - well having your picture taken at a bill signing when it could cost your team 20 grand for charity is a pretty dumb, selfish choice.
I enjoyed the part where Cyndi volunteered to overdub Holly's jingle and Holly responded along the lines of "Cyndi doesn't think I can do anything. She doesn't know what I've been doing over the years". Which would be exactly what? While Cyndi has released albums over few years and been a public face for GLBT rights, how many people know Holly other than from "21 Jump Street"? BTW, the Holly/Cyndi rivalry was great when Trump asked Cyndi to sing the jingle in the boardroom. Holly looked mad.
