'Life Unexpected': Road trip
"Life Unexpected" takes it on the road as Cate confronts her absentee father and Baze confronts his growing feelings for Cate. After last episode's declaration that the wedding is in two weeks, Cate is frantically preparing for the upcoming nuptials. I guess two weeks really means two weeks! While going through a box of her old things at her mother's house, she finds a stack of birthday cards from her father that her mother apparently never gave to her. Upon questioning, Cate learns the entire story of why her father left was a lie, so she decides to visit him to find the truth. Cate, Baze and Lux end up making it a family road trip to his house in Tahoe, complete with too many bathroom breaks, silly music montages and bad road food.
Cate finally arrives at her father's (Peter Horton) house and he recognizes her immediately, which seems unlikely, but hey! It's TV! Things seem to go well and Cate takes the reins and goes full speed with the relationship right away, inviting him to her wedding and making plans to ask him to walk her down the aisle. Baze warns her to be more cautious, which naturally makes her blow up at him and causes him to leave. Also, naturally, Cate's dad completely flakes and leaves Cate and Lux stranded at their hotel. Cate goes to his house and confronts him, and he says he can't be who she wants him to be because, like, it's too much of a time commitment. Or something like that. Wow, jerky. Have fun fishing alone for the rest of your life! (Also: Now that your children are grown, those excuses just won't cut it. Again: jerky!) Baze saves the day by showing up at his house to help pick up the pieces and take Cate and Lux home.
Baze spends the trip confronting new, actual feelings for Cate after his fake confession of feelings in the last episode. Lux notices these feelings on their road trip and asks Baze how long he's had them. He admits its been a while, but instead of wishing for them to go away he is now embracing them because he loves how they seemed like a family on the trip. Lux agrees and appears to welcome his feelings for Cate. Oh boy. This is going to get complicated!
And now it's time for the "Aww" moment of the week! Lux signs her adoption papers to make Cate and Baze her official, legal parents. They even exchange "I love yous." All together now: awwwwwwwwww.
Random thoughts:
- Cate's mother is played by Cynthia Stevenson, who is not quite old enough to realistically play Shiri Appleby's mother. They're 16 years apart so yes, it is biologically feasible, but not likely.
- The road trip montage was a bit cliche but oh so fun. Not so fun? The BLATANT State Farm product placement. Holy awkward, Batman!
- What is up with Baze's Starship obsession? No one likes "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" that much. Not even my mom, and she loves it like nobody's business.
- What do you guys think of Baze's decision to embrace his feelings for Cate? Do you want him to stop Cate and Ryan's wedding? Or should he just leave it alone?
Favorite quotes:
- "Is it weird to want to smell someone?" - Baze
- "Did you just sniff me?" - Cate

this show can NOT get cancelled!
I want Kate and Baze to get together. I like their chemistry with each other. I am hoping that Lux, Kate and Baze can be a family. Then Lux will have the security that she always wanted. Ryan is too good to be true. They need to fix him up with someone zany like Abby. He's too much like a saint. I can't believe fans of this show have to grovel to E and beg and vote to get this show saved when it's one of the best things on the CW.
I love this show it's amazing, and tonight was one of my favorites!!! Really it was fun and emotional, and it gave me everything I needed. The season final looks epic, and I can't wait to find out what happens. Will she marry Ryan???
Just last episode, Lux is telling Ryan that she is glad that he is marrying Cate. Then this episode, she is encouraging Baze. I mean, I get that she is a teenager, but even she should be able to see that it won't end well...
I really love this show. A cut above the rest of CW shows. It can't get cancelled! I'm really falling in love with Lux, Cate and Baze as a family. I want to root for them because they're all so broken but they want to be there for each other. My favorite episode this season! My awww moment was when Cate cried to Baze after confronting her dad. I had a huge stone in my throat. Love this show!!! Please don't cancel it!
I think Baze is an immature child that does nothing but cause trouble. He would be terrible for Cate. She would never be happy with him and would be in a constant argument with Baze because he knows nothing about relationships and the compromizes that must be reached.
Ryan does not need to be treated poorly. I am not so sure that Cate is even good enough for Ryan, having already cheated on him with that idiot that is Baze.
meh. ryan deserves better than cate. but i don't want him to leave the show! lol.
wow. Peter Horton. I recognised him instantly from a movie (B movie I loved) called Side out from the very early 90s. Hasnt changed much in 20 years.
Great episode. I think this episode is a building episode.
I am not usually this sappy but with this show I have been waiting weeks for those 3 words "I love you" from Lux.
And I think Baze is finally growing as a character and it is his relationship with Lux that I like the most. If I ever become a father, I wanna be like him (you know, occasionally childish but always looking out for the best interests of the child which he does)
I love this show very much. Nobody is perfect with all their problems. But together this people have a unique chemistry. Best show on CW. Please keep it...
