'American Idol': Michael Lynche saved!
"American Idol" had a surprising bottom two and an even more surprising lowest vote-getter -- and because of that, the judges played their one-time-only save card. The low man on the totem pole this week was Michael Lynche, who put an R&B spin on the Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby" Tuesday night. He was joined in the bottom two by Andrew Garcia, whose "Can't Buy Me Love" didn't impress the judges that much -- or the voters, as it turned out.
Their presence in the bottom Wednesday (April 7) two made for the first really suspenseful elimination since the top 12 started. Michael did "This Woman's Work" as his sing-for-your-life performance, after which Simon Cowell revealed his fate: "We all wish you'd done something like that yesterday. This is why you're in the position you're in now. ... It's unanimous, if that's any comfort to you. We've decided -- we'll see you next week."
The judges' use of the save -- two weeks earlier than they used it on Matt Giraud last season -- means two people will be sent home next week. Had the judges declined to use it, Michael would have been the first male in the "Idol" top 12 to go home. For one more week, though, it will still be six guys and three girls.
The rest of Wednesday's results show included the return of Season 7 runner-up David Archuleta, who sang John Lennon's "Imagine" (as he did in the semifinals of his season), as well as performances from Rihanna -- who debuted her new single, "Rockstar 101" -- and Jason Derulo, a protege of Kara DioGuardi.
Matt Giraud lasted only two weeks after being saved. Do you think Michael will last longer?

whoa! didn't see that coming.. oh well, as long as siobhan is safe.. :)
A bad save. Judges and critics own fault for hyping the phony and cheesy "Big Mike" up as some wildly popular guy throughout America, almost like Crystal in singing ablility.
All the while, the fan boards lambasted his fake persona and sheer singing suckitude. Next week he will be safe. Sympathy vote. No more saves for others. What if Lee has a really bad night?
Bye-bye!
And think of Top 5 elimimination week possibly being 3 women dividing the vote and Casey and Tim. Katie inherits all Aaron, Andrew, and Tims tweener votes, Magnus finally has her moment, blowing the roof off the place. While Crystal sick, stumbles in her heels, drops a whole verse, and picks up in the wrong key. Sounds hoarse and awful throughout. Simon huddles in a ball, weeping for his fave pet.
Bottom two are robot Katie with her army of tweeners and Crystal. Katie slightly edges her with the old Tim fans. Rescue Crystal from a one-of-a-kind horrific performance?
Sorry, that save was wasted on the Giant Cheeseball. Bye bye!
Kara and Ellen also curl up in sobbing balls. Momasox fans rend their hair.
Well, Chris Ford, that was . . . bizarre.
No way should they have used that save for anyone other than Crystal, Lee, or Siobahn. Maybe Casey. Everyone I gave spoken to who flows the show doesn't care much for Michael Lynche. That sentiment was echoed by the nation's voters.
For Tim Urban to still be on this show reveals the flaw in this voting system.
I don't know what fans the rest of you are talking to, but I've been a big fan of Michael Lynche pretty much since day one. And from the way the audience reacted tonight, I'm gonna go out on a limb and assume I'm not the only one. Granted that Michael wouldn't have been in trouble if they had been more vocal, I think it's safe to say that he has a strong fan base.
Now, me, personally, I can do without Lee, for example, despite the love he seems to engender in other people. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.
@E to the Rick: That flaw in the voting system is, 11-year-old girls control most of the votes.
Michael's performance was the WORST last night which is why he got the lowest number of votes. Plain and simple. He may have been good the past weeks but in a contest like AI, you are only as good as your last performance. And Aaron's and Andrew's performances were better and more tolerable. Voters apparently preferred Katie and Tim's endearing performances of "Let it Be" and "All my Loving" which is why they were unsurprisingly NOT in the bottom 3. Surely, I would take their wonderful performances anytime over "Eleanor Rigby" which was over-rated. I really don't know what the 3 judges heard from him and why they favor this Michael so much and using their one-time save on him.
my top 3 are crystal, katie, and big mike. i love how katie do her let it be
What a waste. I have a bad feeling they will regret that.
I totally believe they use the save too early in the show. It should be used when they get down to maybe 5 or 6. Lee, Siobahn,Crystal and Casey are the only ones worthy of the save. So if they have a bad night now it's over for them. Michael will be on the chopping block again soon. What a waste!
What are you poeple smiokin! Michael has been one of the most consistent contestants on A.I. He has one off night (not bad night) and he's out! It's a bunch of bull! There are people who have no business still being there and you know who they are, people who are still trying to find themselves as a musician, people who need advice week after week. Some of the poeple who didn't make it through are better than these people. And Simon feeling the need to tell him why he was voted off added insult to injury. He had absolutly no business in the bottom three...period!
