"Life Unexpected" puts its characters on lockdown, as a wicked storm forces them to confront some hard truths.

Cate and Ryan's wedding is back on, and Cate is in planning mode. She even asks Lux to be her maid of honor. When wedding planning and crazy family shenanigans get the better of her, Cate decides she and Ryan should elope -- immediately. On their way out of town, however, a killer storm strands Cate at Baze's (with Abby, Math & Jamie) and Lux with Ryan at the radio station. Yes, this is completely contrived. Just go with it -- it's fun!

While rained in, Baze decides (at Math and Jamie's goading) that he needs to break up with Abby before things get too intense. The reason he gives her? Oh, just that he's in love with Cate. Oh, BAZE. Just be a man and tell the truth for once! Of course, Cate overhears the whole thing and is quite surprised at Baze's "revelation," then completely flips out and does her Cate thing where she neurotically yells at everyone until they tell her to shut it.

Baze admits he was lying to Cate, which only makes everything worse, so he mans up and tells Abby the truth about why he needs to call it quits. Considering the truth is the completely honorable reason of doing it for his daughter, I'm not sure why he just didn't mine that well first. If only Baze could think out the consequences of his actions a bit more and start off when he ends up, because that guy is a pretty good one.

Lux goes to a party with Jones as friends. During a particularly spirited game of Suck & Blow, Jones totally rigs it to kiss Lux. When questioned, Jones admits he likes her, but she insists they can't be together because she has a boyfriend. When she later walks in on him kissing another girl, though, she gets upset and storms out of the party. Jones accuses her of wanting to have it both ways, which: truth. Make up your mind, my dear. While rained in with Ryan, she goes over the history of her foster care (via blurry-lensed flashback). They get the "awww" moment of the episode when Lux tells Ryan she's glad he's marrying Cate and Ryan concurs.

Next week: Road trip! And Peter Horton! (Apparently he is working on cornering the market on playing crappy TV dads.)

Random thoughts:

  • Cate's gradual realization of Baze and Abby's relationship during yoga was hilarious. Predictable, yes, but I'll take predictable any day when it's played so perfectly.
  • Why is no one at the radio station broadcasting during the storm? Is this some kind of crazy radio station that only broadcasts from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.?
  • I wasn't crazy about the flashback device used to show Lux's past. It felt tonally out of place for this show, like all of a sudden we were in "Everwood."
  • So the wedding is in two weeks. Are they going to let Cate and Ryan go through with it? I hope so, because I think it's a much more interesting dramatic choice.

Favorite quotes:

  • "The two of you, it sounded like cats being drowned in more cats." - Math, on Baze and Abby's extracurricular activities
  • "A root canal is not that bad. A Matthew McConaughey movie is not that bad. World hunger is not that bad. You're dating Cate's sister: that's bad." - Math

Great episode tonight.

Life Unexpected was awesome tonight. Baze was acting like a huge nasty douche for getting with Abby! His friends had to convince him to break up with her, because he didn't realize what he was doing.I can't stand the guy sometimes. He just needs a good slapping!!! I am loving Ryan and Cate though! Plus Lux has done a complete 180, and I'm really really starting to like her. Bug and Lux, and Ryan & Cate!!!

Really love this show! Every episode is like a surprise. I agree there were some predictable moments but you have to give them credit how it plays out. I'm on Team Baze and I love where the show is taking the Baze and Cate journey. I choked up in the last scene when Baze gave a toast to Cate and Ryan. Love it. Renewal please!!!!

Baze is such a a-hole!!! I love Cate & Ryan though.

The thing that gives the show its emotional center is the solid connection between Lux and Ryan. I never would have figured that one. The guy's got depth.

I'm in the Baze camp and I didn't really see the problem with him dating Abby (and I mean dating, not hooking up). Sure, it's a little awkward, but if they really like each other, why not. It's not like Baze and Cate seriously dated, they only hooked up once almost 17 years ago and as far as we know, have no romantic feelings for each other now.
On another topic, I don't like the Ryan and Lux relationship. Seems artificial to me. They only bring these two together to resolve some conflict or expose information. There's no normal interaction there.

I really liked this show but it's beginning to get on my nerves. Every week the last 10 minutes all we get is one conversation after another where everyone is soooo understanding and all touchyfeely and everyone forgives everyone and aren't we all happy again and all that with that ANNOYING music in the background. Sorry, but life doesn't work that way.

I love the scenes with Ryan and Lux. They're all so sweet. This was a great episode. I really hope this show is back for a second season -- it's such good TV. My favorite lines of the episode? Abby: This isn't Burger King. You can't always have it your way!

i am really tired of cate freaking out. especially when it comes to baze and her feelings about him. seriously. woman you are engaged. make the choice and committ. otherwise let ryan go. god knows he could do better.

but despite what i said, i do like cate and ryan together a lot and hope they end up together.

and i think - of course, this is me creating things where they probably aren't. but ryan is the only stable adult in that bunch. and lux probably talks to him becuase he is the only sane one who is calm with her and doesn't just treat her like a kid.

i just don't want ryan to go away. sure he's a tad annoying but he's the only clear headed one and the other insanity is starting to annoy me.

but maybe that's normal for new relationships to start out all tantrumy.

LOVE Kate & Ryan!! Please let them get married!
