'Life Unexpected': Can't get it right today
"Life Unexpected" explores Lux and Ryan's relationship, and Baze causes more trouble for Cate.
The main story of the night is Cate and Ryan dealing with the aftermath of their breakup. Their split has especially unfortunate timing, considering the station's new advertising campaign revolving around their now-defunct wedding. Whoops! Of course, they are forced to lie and pretend they're still together, which gets especially awkward when they have to host a wedding expo together.
Just when you thought things couldn't get any more uncomfortable, Baze shows up, determined to harangue Ryan about his relationship with Lux. I sense a pattern each week, where either Cate or Baze gets uncomfortable with Lux's relationship with another adult in her life and literally acts like an insane person about it. I understand why they are both insecure in their relationship with Lux, but they seriously need to chill.
The wedding expo ends with a big blowup between Ryan, Cate and Baze where Ryan realizes what we've all sort of known all along: Even though he's handled the aftermath terribly, Baze isn't the bad guy here. Cate made the mistake, and Cate needs to figure out why she did it before Cate and Ryan even have a shot again. After this episode, I admit I'm rooting for Cate and Ryan again! I'm such a flip-flopper!
Meanwhile, Lux has been in a funk since Bug split town. Baze is desperate to get her out of it (and to get her a real friend), so he bribes Jones into asking Lux out on a date. Baze has good intentions here, but you just know this is going to end badly, right? Jones picks a seriously killer first date, though, surprising Lux by driving her the three hours to see Tash. Well played, son. They have a lovely time until Jones goes bonkers and confesses about how the entire thing was a setup. Teenage boys are dumb.
In the end, Ryan shows up at Baze's bar and they have a fantastic conversation and almost sort of, kind of, maybe, make up. It's a miracle! Baze even lets go of his ego enough to ask Ryan for help in talking to Lux. Awww. They have surprisingly great talk, and both admit to missing Cate. Awww, again.

Random thoughts:
- Loved Joe Purdy's "Can't Get it Right Today" as the opening track. He's one of my favorite artists. Check him out! (Also: Schuyler Fisk at the end! Good stuff.)
- Were those bands on Jones' iPod real? If so, I am REALLY old because I haven't heard of a one of them.
- This was the first time I realized Math's name is actually Matthew. Did we already know this?
- One of my favorite things about this show is how each adult character has a different yet wonderful relationship with Lux. Baze is the fun dad who is great at making her feel better, Ryan is the "cool" guy she can talk with about cars and boys, and Cate is the mom who uses her own life experiences to dole out advice. They're building great things here, character-wise.
Favorite quotes:
- "I gotta admit, I was psyched about having Lux stay with us, but she's so depressing. How long can she cry over a guy with a web on his neck?" - Baze
- "Right. I made my bed, now I have to lie about it." - Cate
- "Don't bother trying to fix us, Cate. Just fix yourself." - Ryan

I really thought this episode was great. I'm really having a hard time liking Baze though. He always comes across as very arrogant or cocky. Going through his daughter's phone. He just seems very whiny! Ryan & Cate are just awesome!
Great episode.
I love Baze and Lux's relationship. They are one of my favorite tv dad/daughter duos. I love that Baze isn't fighting Ryan over Cate but Lux. Baze is awesome.
I loved Baze pointing out he isn't the bad guy and to stop coming between him and Lux. Nice Ryan and Baze scene at the bar.
I understand Lux being upset and these little issues with Baze and Cate always bring up her underlying issues with them. So I hope they explore the family dynamic and issues more.
Also love Jones. Don't miss Bug even though he was hot. And poor Math. Also come on, if he's Cate's biggest fan, he should have one the competition.
I loved Baze and Ryan in this episode. Why not drop Cate and have a 'My Two Dads' redux?! They were awesome last night. And Kelly, I agree, the only weak part of the ep for me was that Math should have won the contest. Great episode!
Ugg, Baze, getting over your territorial dad thing. Or actually, don't get over it, but handle it in more mature manner than showing up at Ryan and Cate's work and screwing things up! He is really irritating me about that.
Shiri Appleby is really fantastic in the role of "Cate". She has made this character, who would have been made unbelievable by most shows, a real person. I think they cast this show quite well. People should have realized that Brittany Robertson was going to break out from her brief role in "Swingtown".
Really hope that this show doesn't get canceled -- seing as how they have already renewed what can only be described as garbage with a pathetic and weak cast "90210"; it seems like a quality show with an exceptionally talented cast should get renewed. If not, than they should just cancel this whole trite network.
wenmac its like you read my mind during the Ryan and Baze scene at the bar, I totally went AW Lux has two Dads! They could completely carry the show on their own. And although I don’t dislike the character of Kate I think she is definitely the weakest link.
Honestly I didn't see a special relationship between Lux and Ryan until this episode (maybe the interaction in the second episode counts). Although as a fan of Baze's and Lux relationship I hope the show won't go too far with it in the future (i.e. Lux saying "I wish Ryan was my dad").
Couldn't stand Baze! He's such an immature jerk!
Wow. It's interesting to see polar opposite camps of the boys. I'm firmly in the Baze camp but this episode was the first one since the pilot that I actually liked Ryan. I was wondering what Ryan's purpose was other than Cate's love interest. I was pleasantly surprised to see that he's bonded with Lux and is going to stand by her.
And I loved Baze and Ryan coming to an understanding and Ryan telling Cate she's the one who needs to change. I don't relate to Cate but I do feel bad for her and understand how easy life falls apart.
Also, I thought it was a realistic touch to have Math not get any of the questions right. I had a stalker in high school and I can tell you he didn't really know me. Though I know he thought he did. There is only so much you can glean from the outside.
I felt bad for Cate when she got the wedding dress, she is a miserable mess.
I think Baze is hot!
