'One Tree Hill': Haley gets heartbreaking news

bethany-galeotti-oth-320.jpg"One Tree Hill" scraps the lighthearted fun of the last episode with an installment full of crying and (impending) death. Fun!

The James-Scott clan spends the beginning of the episode dealing with Taylor's pity party after being dumped by David. Seriously, though. Dating your sister's very recent ex and then expecting her to feel sorry for you when he dumps you? Taylor just might be a sociopath.

Everyone ends up at Clay's house in an attempt to avoid Taylor's insanity when Haley's mom (Bess Armstrong) shows up! Considering this is the first time we've seen her since season one (I think?) it's quite the surprise. Also surprising is her showing up at Clay's house, considering there is no actual reason she should know where that is and that he entire family is there. Unfortunately, though, she's not there just to catch up with her daughters. She's there to announce her impending death. Understandably, the James sisters don't take it well, but poor Haley seems to get the worst of the deal when her mother explains she needs to be strong for her sisters, so everyone doesn't fall apart. Sounds like a terrible thing to ask someone to be, honestly.

Julian is busy directing his movie and is spending a lot of time working on getting the best acting out of Alex. Meanwhile, he and Brooke are still navigating their working relationship. They seem to have settled on "friendly, yet with an intensely uncomfortable level of longing involved." The only thing keeping those two apart is Brooke's pride, and Julian's stupidity.

Also in this episode: Millie finally gives in to her recovery and shares at a NA meeting, Alex is still randomly sad/amazing/insecure/confident, and she sleeps with Alexander. (Seriously, I can't figure her character out lately.)

Random thoughts:
  • I don't know why, but I really hate Grubbs, the wise, drink-predicting bartender. Why was he in so many scenes tonight, anyway? And why does it feel like he is this close to having his own storyline?
  • Nathan and Jamie sort of had a conversation about Lucas! And Peyton was mentioned! No word on where the heck they are, though. Figures.
  • OK, so Haley's dad (a.k.a. Huey Lewis) is DEAD? When the heck did that happen, during the five-year leap through time? And is this the first time it's been mentioned? I know Huey probably cost too much money to get him back for this story, but...lame, "OTH." Really lame.
  • Also, if Huey Lewis is dead, what has Haley's mom been doing all of these years? Traveling in the R.V. by herself?

Favorite quotes:
  • "Oh, hey, nine across: superficial bitch. T-A-Y-L-O-R!" - Quinn
  • "Another guy, hypnotized by Alex. She's like a freaking siren." - Brooke
  • "You know, working on the ex-boyfriend's movie in the ex-ex-boyfriend's house is kind of weird, but I'm managing." - Brooke

We last saw Lydia and Jimmy in early season 2. Last mentioned at the end of season 3. Beyond frustrated that we didn't know about Jimmy's death (or see how it affected Haley) but are supposed to instantly understand how much Haley relies on Lydia when there's been no mention of their relationship all these years.

You're right about the Leyton comment, too. Nice to be mentioned but still no details and it makes it seem like Nathan and co. don't even keep in touch with them. Unrealistic and frustrating.

Those are just some of my complaints for this episode! Argh!

Oh, and if it seems like Grubbs is getting his own storyline, it's because he is. Interview with him on my site.

I have noticed several times they have mentioned Lucas -- last year when Skills was moving away but said he would visit and Jamie said something about how Lucas never did. And I've questioned how Lucas left his house empty but completely furnished, but not rented. Where the heck did he and Peyton go?? And what did they take with them?

Haley's mom kinda irritated me. She didn't tell the girls when she first got diagnosed (I'm assuming, although maybe it was already that bad when she found out), and then just expects them to understand that she is not going to get any treatment. Then she scolded Quinn and Haley for crying about it, but defended Taylor for leaving, saying everyone has to grieve in their own way -- yeah, lady, so let your daughters cry if they want to! Grr. Just don't like this story line, seems like manufactured drama. We haven't seen H's parents in ages, and they rarely get a mention, yet now we found out her dad died and her mother is dying.

Ready for Julian and Brooke to get back together -- and new Alex is supposed to be a roadblock, he is horrible. Not cute, not charming, can't act. Blech.

See...I though they were in Haley and Nathans (Dans) beach house. Didn't really look like Clays to me.

I like Grubbs, glad he is finally getting a story line. Even if it does involve the ANNOYING record exec.

If Taylor storming off in a hissy fit is the way they choose to get rid of her, I'm on board. Yeah she brings drama to the show but like you said, she's might just be a sociopath and who needs one of those around?

Umm... why did they make a set of Lucas' house for Alex and Julian's movie? They are no longer filming Lucas' book, they're filming Alex's script and she's never met Lucas. So why build a set to look exactly like Lucas' except to give dialogue to Jamie and Nathan about Lucas?

Is this just so that the producers of OTH can save money on another set? Seems very dumb.

I stand corrected: Haley's parents were last mentioned at the end of season 4 (in addition to the end of season 3) but it's still just as bad.

Oh, and they were at Clay's house for breakfast. It appeared to me that after Quinn and Haley left home, Lydia showed up. Taylor obviously was able to guess where they went or took a chance, so she took Lydia to Clay's.

The Lucas stuff--from the (lack of) mentions to using the house, etc--is incredibly frustrating. It's like they're trying to throw the audience a bone but they're doing it all wrong.

Is Alex the only actor in the whole movie? Is the movie a monologue? Shouldn't her leading man be a part of the storyline somehow. This has been annoying me.
