Tom Delay's double foot injury & Mya gets 10's on 'Dancing with the Stars'
"Dancing with the Stars" was kind of all over the place tonight - fractured feet, breakthroughs, regressions, and Len returned to wearing a giant pair of grumpy-pants.
As the couples come down the Dreaded Stairs of Doom, there's a whole lot of action going on with some of the outfits. Holy crap Louie Vito looks sooo different - slicked back hair, four buttons open on the shirt, showing a little chest. That kid's built. And Mark Ballas' hair is...voluminous. As always, the scores are listed in Carrie Ann-Len-Bruno order.
1. Mark Dacascos & Lacey
Dance/Song: Rumba/"Don't Lie" a la Black Eyed Peas
Mark's biggest obstacle this week is his speed, which i a much bigger problem than usual since it's a Rumba. Also, the song is just off for the dance. I had to mute it. Mark did a good job controlling his movements - they were definitely the right tempo. His moves are a bit too sharp for the dance but, given the jaunty tune, I can't blame him. He needed something that was undeniably slow-tempo to mellow him out. Also, Lacey did great choreography.
Judges: After acknowledging that the Rumba for celeb men are really tough, Len thought it was a bit too on the rough side. Bruno agrees there was a lack of chemistry because of the sharp movements. Carrie Ann says the quality of movement is great and suggests to stop concentrating on the pictures and really connect the emotions.
Score: 18 (all 6's) - Ok, I think this was a bit underscored
2. Joanna Krupa & Derek
Dance/Song: Samba/A fun little Latin song I've heard before but don't know the name
They start out with Derek bungee-chord swinging onto the stage. That fancy opening doesn't make up for the fact that she looked far more...stiff (and awkward) than in the rehearsal package. The Samba Roll was solid and she has good hip action. Overall I thought it was pretty eh. Honestly, I can't tell if it was really her or if the rehearsal footage made me raise my expectations too high. Either way, they better not score her higher than Mark. Also, not to be
Judges: Bruno thought it was full of excitement and life but pointed out some problems she had. Carrie Ann loves that she's fearless but agrees that her footing was off at times. Len said it had "quality stamped all over it" and slobbered a little.
Score: 23 (7-8-8) - Overscored by the men, as always
3. Mya & Dmitry
Dance/Song: Rumba/"Underneath Your Clothes" a la Shakira
Dmitry was certainly using her flexibility to his advantage - three or four different major moves involving splits or general bendiness. It was really good choreography, had chemistry, and executed extremely well (though Carrie Ann of the Lift Police may make an appearance - for a warning if not actually docking a point). If Joanna got 8's from Len and Bruno, she bloody well better get 10's.
Judges: Carrie Ann had chills and said it was complete fluidity. She also says she was so mesmerized, she couldn't tell if there was actually a lift, much to the delight and relief of the crowd. Len loved the chemistry and romance but there were too many tricks for him. Wha? Bruno said she "put all of America in the mood for love."
Score: 27 (10-7-10) - Effing really Len?
4. Melissa Joan Hart & Mark Dance/Song: Samba/"Turn Me On" a la Kevin Lyttle
The rehearsal package shows that this was a gut check week for Melissa. Mark says he can teach her the steps but he can't teach her to put her heart and soul into it. She agrees in the package but did it translate to the dance floor? Their Samba Rolls were very good and Melissa's technique has improved. Sometimes I could see on her face that she was concentrating but when she smiled or made sassy!face, it totally lit up the floor. Granted, her hip action wasn't as good but I think she did better than Joanna.
Judges: Len said she performed well and had good foot a leg action but she needs a little more rhythm in the hips. Bruno thinks she improved though lost timing a few times. Carrie Ann also sees improvement but gives the advice to totally let go of her fear to improve the performance quality.
Score: 19 (6-6-7) - What is going on tonight?
5. Louie Vito & Chelsie
Dance/Song: Rumba/"Total Eclipse of the Heart" a la Bonnie Tyler
Apparently this is the only Latin dance Louie knew anything about before coming in, which is kind of hilarious. In the footage he says he wants to do nine Rumbas this season. Because he's a boy and Chelsie is hot (my words, not his). He did very well and it was great choreography (including this crazy split thing while she was dipped). His character was perfect but one thing he needs to work on is bridging his arm movements and body rolls more fluidly. He's still my dark horse to win it.
Judges: Bruno loved the performance and chemistry but advises to work on the fluidity. Carrie Ann agrees the chemistry was fab and adds that Louie gives a really good frame. Len thought it was wild, lacked finesse, and that Chelsie put to much syncopation in there.
Score: 21 (8-5-7) - the look Bruno cut Len when he held up his paddle was hilarious
6. Debi Mazar & Maks
Dance/Song: Samba/"Love Is In The Air" a la John Paul Young
Being in the bottom last week bumped up her focus so Maks brings in Mel B. for some inspiration and perspective. I love Debi's outfit but she needs a little more consistent hip action and bounce. She did perform well, it was a cute number, but it seemed a smidge careful. I'm not so sure the judges *coughLENcough* will be appreciative.
Judges: Carrie Ann thought it was cute but also a bit safe, especially in consideration with her fiery nature. Len says she did everything well but "lacked flavor." Bruno agrees it seemed a bit disconnected and tells her she must "work it."
Score: 17 (6-5-6)
7. Donny Osmond & Kym
Dance/Song: Rumba/"Endless Love" a la Lionel Richie & Diana Ross
Kym decided to give Donny a little solo at the beginning. It was good but he got better when they actually paired up. Somewhat like Louie, he needs to smooth out some of his body movements - he's still a little too "Broadway" at times. There was an element of romance for sure though I wouldn't call it hot. It was good, definitely one of the better numbers tonight.
Judges: Len points out his legs were a little too flexed at times but he did a great job overall. Bruno said it was a bit airy at times which lead Donny to go up and dip him a couple times. It was...hilarious. Carrie Ann followed that up by saying, "That was a bit awkward," and had to refer to her notes thanks to being slightly scarred. She gave him a lot of credit for doing a solo and loved the vulnerability, though says he lost his musicality a bit.
Score: 21 (all 7's)
8. Michael Irvin & Anna D.
Dance/Song: Samba/"Hard to Handle" a la Otis Redding
Because they were having a bit of a communication issue, Anna incorporated a goal checklist on a dry erase board which really seemed to help. The song choice certainly helped Michael get into a groove. He had this really cool, smooth energy and quality of movement. The technique wasn't fantastic but it was performed well. And he didn't waggle his tongue a single time.
Judges: Bruno said he's reverted in that the energy was great but the technique was not so much. Carrie Ann finally told him that he's dancing too small, which he totally is. Len says it's a hard dance for a large guy and was disappointed.
Score: 14 (5-4-5)
9. Natalie Coughlin & Alec
Dance/Song: Rumba/"In The Air Tonight" a la Phil Collins
Since Natalie's having some issues, Alec brings in his wife Edyta to help her get her sexy on. It's the eye contact that she's having problems with. Weird song to do a Rumba to but Alex choreographed it well. Her lines are fabulous, her feet have impoved (yay for pointed toes!), and she kept up the eye contact and performance level. It was more smoldering than outright fire, but hot nonetheless.
Judges: Carrie Ann called it gorgeous and loved the drama, Len thought there was chemistry and great leg action, and Bruno called her a "sexy beast."
Score: 26 (9-8-9)
10. Chuck Liddell & Anna T. Dance/Song: Samba/"Mas Que Nada" a la Sergio Mendes
To help get in touch with his feminine side, he went and got a pedicure with his teen-ish daughter. Cute! It certainly helped because Chuck looked a lot more relaxed and smiley on the floor. The technique isn't great but he is stepping it up every week and it's just really fun watching him dance.
Judges: Len congratulated Anna for doing a great job and said Chuck thoroughly entertained him. Bruno said it "looked like a Samba from Zombietown but Zombietown was a hit." Carrie Ann says the attitude and spirit were perfect though the Samba may not be his best dance.
Score: 17 (6-5-6) - Anna was cringing and hiding her eyes somewhat playfully before the scores came up
11. Aaron Carter & Karina
Dance/Song: Rumba/"Spotlight" a la Jennifer Hudson
I'm not sure what's up with Aaron's weird smoking-jacked deal but the dance was good. He had a brief balance issue but the technique was solid. It lacked a little sizzle but was well performed overall. I just don't think he got the romantic concept down perfectly in rehearsals and that translated to the floor.
Judges: Bruno said there was plenty of attack but lacked some fluidity, likening it to Hip Hop. Carrie Ann agrees he moves beautifully but is over-exaggerating the movements like Karina said. Len thinks it lacked musicality because his arms were too straight and sharp.
Score: 21 (8-6-7)
12. Tom Delay & Cheryl
Dance/Song: Samba/"Why Can't We Be Friends" a la War
Tom had a pre-stress fracture last time we checked in with him, it's now been upgraded to a full stress fracture. And now his left foot has decided to be fractured as well. Both the producers and doctors have advised him to quit but he's determined to continue. Tom's counting a lot of the time but still dances well in spite of his injured feet. The hip action was solid but it still creeps me out when he does little shimmies. It was a simple dance with a lot of personality.
Judges: Carrie Ann says he's smooth and gentle but it wasn't that exciting, though relents a bit because of the injury. Len says it was understandably careful. Bruno gives him a lot of credit for going on but acknowledges that the performance suffered.
Score: 15 (6-4-5)
13. Kelly Osbourne & Louis
Dance/Song: Samba/"Love Games" a la Lady Gaga
I'm loving the little red wig she's rocking. The choreography is really good and the Samba Roll was nice. Her legs are really good and she was smiling through the whole number, she looked like she was genuinely having fun. At the end, Louis planted a fake kiss on her chin, she then planted a real one on him quickly. And they laughed. She's just adorable.
Judges: Len says her problem is confidence but he's convinced she's a good dancer. Bruno thinks she's back, that she performed some difficult moves, and advises to get rid of doubt. Carrie Ann agrees and says that, when she does it right, her technique is "beyond" and "ridiculous."
Score: 20 (7-6-7)
Bottom Three: Hmm...it's hard to say because there's a lot of clustering and scores and the couples in the bottom may not actually all be in the bottom. I'm guessing Debi, Michael and Tom. Possibly Chuck, but somehow I doubt it.
Who's Out: It should be Tom just to save him from further injuring himself but it'll probably be Debi. Which makes me sad because I like her.
Do you have any idea what crawled into Len's craw tonight? Agree that the scoring was wonky? Which number was your favorite tonight? Let me know what you thought!

Yes, the scores were wonky tonight. The judges were definitely less than consistent.
Tom should go due to injury and the creepy hip/ass moves we keep getting. (Why Cheryl? Why?) ...But considering how long the fans kept Cloris around, he's probably not going anywhere.
And who knew adorable, cute-as-a-button, little Louie had such a strong, sexy stare in him? Rrowrr! =)
BTW, what was up with that see-through, ladies bathrobe that Aaron was wearing? I was hoping it'd come off in the beginning and we'd be left with a perfectly fine white shirt, but no... WTF wardrobe dept?
Tamara, I'm most interested in the sentence that was cut short in your review of Joanna Krupa's dance. "Also, not to be....." Maybe, Also not to be mean, but that woman has one ugly schnoz for a model? Or, Also not to be critical, but I can't get over what an absolute bitch this piece of work was on The Superstars this summer? Or, Also not to be presumptuous, but she must be blowing Len to get an 8? Or maybe, Also not to be optimistic, but I hope she'll be gone this week? But maybe that's just me.
Did we need 15 minutes, out of the 2 hour broadcast, of Tom rubbing his feet. Every time there was a promo for him they would zoom in on him rubbing his feet. Good grief. Len needs an enema or something.
Oh, my. I've been on vacation and this is the first episode I've seen. We have some real clunkers here, don't we? My money is on Mya and Dimitri. Debi Mazar should go home just because she's so creepy to look at. Who designed that hideous costume that looked like it was made out of leftover fox tails? I mean, I love Maks and all, but she's too much!
I am not a melissa fan at all but i actually felt sorry for her this week...she did better and had some hard moves...they even said it was better but they never give her the scores...
I think they are being inexplicably rough on Mark. 18? Really...? He's not my favorite, but he's certainly deserving of at least a 21 for his performance last night. It seems they just don't like him because, to me, he has been underscored on every performance he has given.
I think if Len wants to be the "tough" judge, that's fine if he is consistent with all the dancers. And that's a big "If".
Best part of the night? Louie Vito's dance -- a FIVE, Len, really? Tom Delay got a four on two broken feet!
Worst part of the night? Aaron Carter's outfit. Including, no less, a big fey satin sash? C'mon!
Anyone ready to go out on a limb and call the 3 who will make it to the finale? I'll say Mya, Donny, and Natalie.
As an aside, couldn't agree more with the comments on Aaron's outfit. I found it so distracting and effeminate that I didn't even really see their dance.
I guess t.v.'s "thing" now, is
to have a cranky Brit on their
show to create controversy...
Piers on "Talent," Gordon on
"Hell's Kitchen," Simon on
"Idol," Len on "Stars," and
Nigel on "So You Think..." I
guess we have another British
invasion on our hands.
Len was awful tonight. He majorly underscored Mya/Dmitry and Louie/Chelsea.
All threee judges underscored Melissa and Mark.
And they overscored Joanna.
