'The Vampire Diaries': The undead don't always rise

paulwesley_iansomerhalder_thevampirediaries_290.jpgI would say the death toll rose yet again on "The Vampire Diaries," but in truth, it would be more accurate to say the undead toll fell.

Vicky is on the loose and the person she decides to seek help from first is Tyler. And by help, I mean she sobs to him that she's hungry and then lunges for his jugular. Stefan stops her and Damon nearly kills Tyler, but glamours him into forgetting the incident instead. Jeremy decides to skip school to organize a search party for Vicky, but by that afternoon she's called Matt to tell him that she's all right and he doesn't need to worry.

Surprisingly, it's Damon who is worried, because the local news doesn't mention anything about Logan being dead. Additionally, he and Stefan know what the watch is and so they know there are those who are looking for them. So, he decides to try and find them first. He overhears Tyler's parents talking about Logan and the missing watch, which is more than enough to catch his interest.

Meanwhile, Elena comes by the Salvatore house to see what's going on with Vicky and Stefan promises he's trying to help her. Vicky just complains about how she wants more blood. The moment Stefan leaves them alone, she tells Elena exactly what she thinks of her and that she'll rip her head off if she thinks she will stand between her and Jeremy.

Bonnie talks to her grandmother about their witchy ancestors. She wants to get down to the business of spellcasting but she's told the craft is serious. And she's going to be late for school. In the halls, Bonnie gets her Halloween costume from Caroline, and it includes the crystal she took from Damon. Also going to the Halloween party are Tyler's parents. But first his mom throws a couple martinis back and Damon decides to try and glamour some answers from her. The vervain bracelet she's wearing stops him in his tracks. And so does the news that his own "Uncle Zach" was the supplier. Not only for her, but for "the council," whoever they are.

Damon gets back to the house and decides it's time to teach Vicky some of the perks to being a vampire. The first one he decides to teach her is their ability to move with superhuman speed. Of course, she uses that knowledge to run away. She goes back home and finds out she can't actually walk inside. At least, not until her brother asks her to come in. Stefan isn't too far behind, but when he arrives Vicky tells Matt not to let him in.

At the party, Nurse Elena runs into Dr. Matt and finds out Vicky is there. Damon is also there and he catches sight of the necklace being worn by Bonnie. But when he tries to take it back, he gets burned for the effort. She runs off to find Jeremy to keep him away from the dangerous Vicky, but he's already been found. She tells him that she's leaving and if he comes with her they can be together forever. I don't think he really understands how literally she means those words. All the same, a kiss becomes a bite and a moment later he's screaming for her to get off him. Elena finds them just in time to draw Vicky's attention. When Stefan sees Elena being munched on by Vicky, he takes the only course of action he can think of. He stakes Vicky.

Back at the house, Jeremy is beyond distraught over the loss of Vicky, which has brought back the loss of his parents. Stefan is waiting outside and Elena comes out to ask him to glamour the memory of the night away for Jeremy because she doesn't think he can live with it. Unfortunately Stefan doesn't think he can accomplish it because he doesn't feed on human blood. Which is when we get the second surprise from Damon as he appears and offers to do it. As he disappears in the house, Elena says she wishes she could forget it all too, and not just this night. She would also like to forget meeting Stefan, finding out he's a vampire and everything that's happened since. Stefan looks crestfallen over the idea until she adds that she can't lose how she feels about him.

Do you believe Damon glamoured away Jeremy's memories, or did he put something far darker in his head? Is he going to be able to convince the mayor and his wife that Zach is just on vacation and that he's their new vervain connection?

Vicky was one of the most interesting characters.... I am sad that they killed her, but I do like it when shows do unexpected things.

"Do you believe Damon glamoured away Jeremy's memories, or did he put something far darker in his head?"

Didn't even think of that...while would definitely up his already high "evil factor" and surely drive Stephan & Elana crazy to know he has a new pet...it almost seems a little TOO evil

If the writers want Damon to have a small redeeming quality so the viewers don't totally turn off, he did make Jeremy forget.

Even though he said he doesn't care anything about what he does, it seems like the writers would want us to like Damon for doing it, not kicking a puppy.

Does that make sense?

Great episode last night. The spoilers were saying that there would be a "shocking" death, but I had predicted it would be Vicky. The writers can't kill off the three lead characters (Elena, Stefan, Damon), and I figured that Bonnie and Jeremy were safe for now. I was a little worried that the writers might have Vicky kill her own brother, Matt if he tried to stop her from feeding on Jeremy or killing Elena. I'm glad that Matt is safe (for now anyways), but it's sad to see Vicky killed off so soon. :-(

I thought that Damon might not have erased Jeremy's memories because he was alone with him, while Stefan and Elena were outside talking. It would make it more interesting if Damon were to make Jeremy do something evil, but I'm not sure if that will happen.

Good episode last nite - good, also 'cause how Damon supposedly did good things, not just being his evil self. And how Stefan called on Damon for help - to get rid of the really dead undead Vicky. But who's Logan..?? Is that the reporter who lusts after Jenna..?? I'm so confused. And Stefan - how come he all of a sudden couldn't erase Jeremy's memories - he had been able to do it to others before - the writers better check their notes for inconsistencies - THAT spells doom for a show if it doesn't make sense. But they had to kill off Vicky - otherwise, the show would take off in another direction, with vampires running around - What I don't understand is why Vicky became a vampire after Damon sucked the daylights out of her - but Caroline didn't..?? After all, Damon fed off her more than off Vicky..?? Again, I'm so confused. At the end of the day, though, this show is still good (except for the inconsistencies) so far. And I like it that Elena now knows Stefan and Damon are vampires - that advances the show in the right direction. Oh, and Bonnie being a witch - awesome...!!

@Shanae - I don't think Stefan has glamored anyone so far, but I could be wrong. As for Vicky, while she was drained Damon fed her his blood and subsequently snapped her neck, completing her transition to the living dead. That is why she turned and Caroline didn't.

@Shanae, rewatch some old episodes...
Logan was the reporter that got killed in the woods while tracking with the watch (and yes, Elena's aunt's ex).
Stefan has "glamoured" before, but he is too week for it to be completely sucessfull. Damon never killed Caroline, nor fed her his blood.

i would be surprised if Damon did anything other than erase Jeremy's memory.

the writers are obviously intending on creating a "love triangle". to do that Damon needs some redeeming qualities for the audience to believe that Elena could ever possibly like him.

Stefan made Vicky forget about being attacked by Damon the first time, so, yeah, he can do it. But he said at the time that he's not as strong at it as Damon because Damon feeds on human blood. Uh-huh.

I don't watch previews so I had no preconceptions about the show or how the plot would go. I thought Vicky was an interesting character and one who would have been a welcome additional vampire presence in the town, but I guess (?) that's not meant to be.

I find Elena's foolish chances with the vampires -- threatening them, hitting them, being alone with them, etc. -- to be annoying and a bit far-fetched. I get it that she's a newbie when it comes to All Things Vamp, but she comes off as super stupid when she knowingly puts herself in danger with creatures she doesn't understand or have the powers (yet) to control.

This is why it was annoying to me that she agreed to let Damon erase her brother's memory *alone* without her there to hear what he said. She tells him what she wants him to say and then, (for some reason as yet unexplained), trusts that this is what he'll do.

Whether Damon did or didn't isn't interesting to me, only that Elena and Stefan (who should know better) trusted that he would!

I love, love, love that they have witch characters on the show and I like Bonnie and her grandmother. I hope they develop them a bit more and that Bonnie learns not to freak out every time she does something magical. She needs to own her powers and respect them.

One thing, though, the picture of Bonnie's ancestor showed her to look exactly like Bonnie -- is it necessary for everyone to have an old-timey twin on this show?

I also like Matt, but they've not done much with him yet. I'm guessing he'll have quite a bit to do and say when he discovers that vampires walk among them and that they killed his sister ... twice.

The show is still predictable, and character motivations aren't always made clear, but the plot has some strong points and I'm interested to see how it all will develop.

For some reason I just really seem to hate Elena. She has no role in this show. All she does is criticize and judge Stephen which is really starting to **** me off. There are other characters who are far more interesting than she is.
