'Supernatural' Back to the future again
So far, this season of 'Supernatural' has been one downer after another. Is there anything about a dystopian future full of Croatoan infected humans living in a desolate wasteland that could uplifting? You might be surprised!Dean gets a call from Castiel, but begs for a 4 hour reprieve to get some sleep. But then Sam calls Dean to tell him that he's found out the he is Lucifer's vessel and how it's made him rethink his decision on their split. Unfortunately it has not seemed to change Dean's mind about the matter. In fact, he almost seems more determined that they should each pick a hemisphere and stick to it. In his opinion, they are weaker together, so they need to stay far apart. Dean hangs up and goes to sleep, only to awaken in that dystopian future I mentioned.
That trip to 2014 is thanks to Zachariah, who wants him to see how awful the future works out to be if he keeps on the path that he's chosen. And if there's a "President Palin", you know things have gotten beyond bad. Dean heads off to see Bobby but only finds a bullet ridden wheelchair, along with a picture of him and Castiel with a few others at Camp Chitaqua. Dean heads out, but ends up getting punched out by his future self.
Future Dean figures out quickly enough that Past Dean is the real deal and the this is Zachariah's doing. He tells Past Dean that Sam was lost in Detroit but that he wasn't there and hadn't spoken to Dean in over 5 years. He goes off on a mission and leaves Past Dean locked up, but he really should have known that he would break out. And he does, running into Chuck before finding Castiel. Acting like the orgy guru. Cas recognizes that Dean is not "now Dean"
Before Past Dean can make much of a plan, he sees Future Dean shoot one of his own crew, and in the seeing, reveals himself to the survivors. Future Dean tells the crew they will know what they need to know when they need to know it and goes to confront his past. I seems that Sea isn't dead. He said yes to Lucifer. And when all the angels abandoned earth, Castiel became not much more than the average human. And it's been all downhill for everyone since then. As such, Future Dean demands and then begs that Past Dean say yes to Michael to avoid it all.
He decides to show, not tell, and is willing to risk his entire crew, Human-Castiel and himself for Past Dean to watch him kill Lucifer-Sam. I may have just given myself an aneurysm with that sentence. Anyway, Past Dean is about to be the whistle blower when Future Dean knocks him out cold again. Past Dean comes to just in time to see Lucifer-Sam kill Future Dean and then have a pretty chilling heart to heart, where Lucifer tells him this is how it will end, because this is how it always ends, because Dean always says no. It's just enough to strengthen Past Dean's resolve to get the better of the devil.
Thus, when Zachariah pulls Past Dean our of the future, he expects a compliant vessel for Michael, ready prove Lucifer wrong by saying yes. Instead, he gets a "nah". Which about sends him into a fit and he's about to send him into another hell, declaring "I've got you now and never letting you-" when he's suddenly gone. Standing next to Normal-Past-Angel Castiel, who reminds him that they had an appointment. Perfect timing. And it turns out Dean did learn something and make a decision. He calls Sam and invites him to come back. YAY!
The Funny:
Dean: I'm talking to a messenger of God on a cell phone. Isn't that like seeing a Hell's Angel on a moped?
Castiel: This isn't funny Dean. The voice says I'm almost out of minutes!
Future Dean: If you are me, tell me something only I would know.
Past Dean: Rhonda Hurley. We were 19, she made us try on her panties...pink, satiny...and we kinda liked it.
Future Dean: ...touche'.
Past Dean: Oh come on. You don't trust yourself?
Future Dean: Absolutely not.
Past Dean: Dick.
What did you think of the angels using the religious zealots to locate Dean? Did you buy Lucifer-Sam's sympathy for the devil bit, or were you too mesmirzed by Sam in the suit? Was there a Groundhog Day implication to all that?

Am I the only one who's trying to resist the urge to go out and stock up on toilet paper now? LOL
You know what I love? Sam called his brother to tell Dean that he is Lucifer's vessel. Yeah, Sam! No more secrets!! The boy's learning.
I really liked the episode and I LOVE the fact that the boys are back together again! They are stronger together.
loved the episode! totally loved sam as lucifer, love guru cass?? sign me up. lol. nice to see cass in a different outfit, must suck having to wear the same thing over and over and over. brain hurt a little following the dean show, considering the rumor that they were gonna phase out jared made it hard to watch.
I loved this episode I was totally expecting dean to say yes. Leave it to dean to be a smart "Dick" and get the true meaning out of his experience.
I could not believe they would ditch Jared, So extra happy dances were danced after Sam and Dean were in the same scene together again. After the whole stock up on toilet paper mhy b/f calls his dad to make sure that they had some it was too funny. Great episode I want tto see some hope for the boys soon all this depression is getting to me. Remember boys it is not ok to sya yes even if they tell you they need it and it can prove how much you love them...
So I know it was supposed to be a total "holy crap" moment as we soaked up the end game in the future that Dean saw, but as Zachariah zapped him in the forehead all I could think was, "Great, now he's not gonna poop for a week." *tee hee*
Cas settling in to stand patiently on the side of the road for four hours was both funny and sad all at the same time. Love Cas!
The advice to hoard toilet paper? Priceless.
Lucifer-Sam with the creepy half-smile was awesome. Well done by Mr. Padalecki. He even completely abandoned the Sam-scrunchy-forehead, which was reassuring, because that has been his go-to move lately. Although I do suppose Sam has had a lot to worry about this season. =)
Glad the separation only lasted two episodes. The boys work best in tandem.
I was so looking forward to seeing Kripke's vision of the world nearing the 'End' and this episode's revelations kept me on the edge of the sofa throughout!
From Dean's first view of the ravaged street scene to the moment of Castiel's rescue-by-appointment, it was a revealing and disturbing study of a possible future for Dean and Sam. Dean was forced to face how his action, or rather, inaction could affect the outcome of the apocalypse and discover how this experience could change him down to the core.
Considering the long, hard road so far in pursuit of the colt, though, I was baffled by the absence of any other battering on Dean besides to his 'soul'. I expected to SEE more evidence of the last five year's battling on him. Scars or beard or scruffiness or smoking or at LEAST aging! But besides the jacket, I almost lost track of past and future Deans in a couple of scenes.
FutureCastiel seemed much more visually 'appropriate' to the times but I thought his stoner free-spirited-ness was a little over the top. Would he change THAT much from his innocent stoic-ness? I would think he would become quite wise but hardened and angry after the outcome of the angels 'leaving' and his obviously fruitless hunt for God. However, it was heartening to see that he stayed by Dean's side throughout the fight so far.
I was disappointed to not find Bobby in this future and worse, no scene explaining what happened to him. A scene between the Deans addressing this would have added to the power of the story IMO.
Poor Metallicar! What could possibly make Dean just give up on his 'baby'? This also made me ponder future Dean's too-perfect appearance even more. He would get his hair cut perfectly and look after himself well instead of looking after the Impala??
Jared's great portrayal of Lucifer was confident and well understated. Hope we see more of Sam/Lucifer because he could take the character so much further, but I didn't think he showed enough 'relief' upon his reunion with Dean later. I, too, missed a spontaneous hug!
I also was surprised by the downplayed death scene of FutureDean. Needed to SEE the impact of Dean seeing himself dying defeated at Sam/Lucifer's hand to drive home in his mind and the viewers' minds the possible consequences of his choices to come.
Also just thought of another approach Zachariah could have taken with Dean's 'teaching'...he could just as easily have shown him what the world's future would be if Dean DID say 'yes' to Micheal. Might this be more convincing to Dean? This would also be a great story to see. But the story to unfold now with both brothers determined to stay together and 'human' for the battle ahead will be even better!
I’m not enjoying Supernatural this season. It’s just not scary anymore. Give me back episodes like the scarecrow coming to life, or the little girl coming out of the painting to kill people. Those were episodes that caused me to let out a screech or two. I’m sick of demons. They are boring -- oh, look at me, my eyes turn black and I’m strong – BORING! Give us back screech-worthy episodes. Give us back the fun!
I am loving this season. SO - either the end is not going to come down to a brother vs. brother - so Kripke showed us that now so that we would get to see it. OR - as Lucifer said to Dean - this is how it always ends - meaning Kripke just gave us a taste of where we are going - but the interesting part will be the journey to get there. can't decide which is now true
Wow to the reader who doesn't find this show scary any more. End of the world and Lucifer walking the earth is pretty scary to me !
Of course - I am considering that Zacariah showed this vision to Dean - so it is highly suspect. Zac would show Dean whatever he wanted Dean to see to get him to agree to Zac's plan !
Why don't you keep your political views out of your show synopsis. Some of your readers might like Palin.
I really liked this episode, too. Loved Dean's strength. And I so enjoy his interactions with Castiel. Really great. I think this show just gets better and better. I also agree with another poster - I'm not interested in your political viewpoints and it's a good way to annoy at least half of your audience. Completely unnecessary.
