'How I Met Your Mother': Robin contemplates Canada as Marshall and Ted road trip

cobiesmulders_himym_canada_.jpgOur lovable couples split up tonight on "How I Met Your Mother." Barney and Robin headed to America Junior while Marshall and Ted (and Lily) headed off to Chicago, or, as I like to think of it, the home of Dr. Richard Kimble.

Ted and Marshall were off reliving a college road to get some horrible pizza, the kind of experience that always seems better the further away from it you get (if I were to relive my college road trip days it would be to stay at the Admiral Benbow in Memphis, a place not for the faint of heart). What I wouldn't do is take my wife or allow my best friend to take his wife on such a trip (and not just because the Admiral Benbow always seemed to be the kind of place where you could find companionship ... cheap).

Bringing a third wheel is just asking for trouble -- either there will be a lot of "you should have been here last time," or one of those folks who was there will get wholly ignored. It's a tough balancing act, and Marshall was a disaster at it.

Why would Marshall have thought bringing Lily was a good idea? Why would they have thought that Ted wanted to go to Crumpet Manor, the couple hotel from hell? Why wouldn't they just want to push on as fast and hard as they could to their pizza place, especially after drinking all that Tantrum? That's just not the way you do a road trip.

Sparky kidnapping Marshall was excellent, though. Helen certainly didn't miss him what will all the pampering she was undergoing back at the Crumpet. It's just sad that he spent so much time missing her instead of enjoying the pizza. The moral of the story? Chicago pizza may be delicious, but boy is it unhealthy -- it hurts intestines, it hurts arteries, and it even hurts relationships. Now, if it doesn't kill you, it may make you stronger, but that pizza looked like it could have been deadly, and even if it wasn't, it was artery-clogging.

I'm all for insanity in the show, but what sort of nonsense was this about Robin studying to become a U.S. citizen for a test the next day? Let's ignore the fact that it takes oh-so-much more than just a test and you can't decide to take the test one day before it's being administered. Let's just move on to the fact that the show didn't opt for the usual fake marriage thing.

Wait, strike that -- it was a great thing they didn't go down that well-worn road. Not only would it have turned "HIMYM" into a standard sitcom, but I'd also just have to make a joke about how she ought to have married me instead. Good call, producers (but I would have married Robin had it been necessary).

Robin not being able to fully eliminate the Canadian from herself was probably also a good call ... especially since it led to Barney finding her on the floor of a room in Toronto surrounded by hockey gear the next morning. Barney must love that girl in order to actually follow her to the Great White North. Getting the stuffing kicked out of him, however, was just stupid. He should have known that Canadians can fight; after all, that's what hockey is all about.

Odds and ends:

  • Our quote of the night goes to Barney, "I'm going to drill you and then we're going to study..." either that or "plant my flag in her..." Same theme, different jokes, both funny. Most of Barney's lines tonight were great.
  • I want more Hoser Hut, don't you?
  • Dual citizenship? I'll buy that.
  • Was that really Kenny Rogers? I'm so happy he hasn't folded them yet.

Loved Ted being "Sparky"

But not Lilly as "Helen". There could never be a Stripper Helen!

Loved the Candian content, but the Leafs winning a game, now that is far fetched.

Wasn't loving this ep. Was kinda dumb really. They made Lilly waaaay too annoying, and Marshall waaay too stupid.

To "Eh?" I totally agree.

Chicago-style pizza is actually extraordinary but that pizza they showed was NOT Chicago-style. It was greasy and icky and could've been served anywhere. I didn't get that whole driving to Chicago for that lousy pizza deal. It was really dumb bringing Lily but it was the whole "we" thing so she had to be brought. Her peeing every two minutes was idiotic. The show is hilarious despite all the idiocy.

I've stayed at the Admiral Benbow!!! It was better than the Memphis Econolodge, where I found drugs in my room.

While some of the ep was over the top I thought it was one of the funiest so far this year. I think with this show sometimes it helps to remember that these stories are being told from the perspective of Ted's memory and as such, Lily may have seemed far more annoying to him then she actually was (seriously who pees every five minutes or does it just seem that way sometimes). I thought it was hysterical, her lifting the humungous jug of water right at the beginning. I'm not sure if that is part of the license taken by the writers and is intentional or not, it's just a thought. I mean there's no one as ridiculously over the top as Barney either, but there are people I've known who seem that ridiculous. To me that is part of the fun of the show, it's given the characters free reign to be over the top even beyond ridiculousness. I loved that Ted kidnapped Marshall and he only had a robe on. Although I did not totally buy that Lily would not have noticed Marshall the entire time since they were a we. I expected her to have slept the whole time.

I did think the Robin citizen ship plot was way too far fetched. I don't think you can just decide you want to have duel citizenship. And what was the point of her becoming a citizen anyway. But it validly examined her where her psyche was with being Canadian vs American. As i am half-a-Canuck, I was kind of happy the Canadians beat on Barney. While I've not been there for some time, my take on Canadians that I've known is they have a similar though not as malicious contempt for many things American as Barney was giving back to them, so I'm glad they didn't portray them as not willing to get him back for basically being an *** at their expense.

Tim Horton's coffee, the best in the WORLD!

Id seriously like some Tantrum!
