'Heroes': Greatest American Heroes
Really excellent episode of "Heroes" tonight. Believe it or not, I'm walking on air.Claire
Claire is faced with a choice this episode: lesbian or sorority girl. Just do what a lot of college girls did, Claire. Use one to be the other. [hands smacking] Problem solved.
No seriously, Claire is approached by her mom's sorority in the form of Jackie Cook from "Veronica Mars." Gretchen doesn't like it one bit and her obsession with Claire starts to show, complete with many, many websites on her computer about Claire and a possible attempted murder of Claire's new friend at a sorority mixer.
So what does Gretchen do to make it better? Lays a big smooch on Claire. As one does. Just then the sorority girls show up and offer them both bids. I would call BS on Gretchen getting a bid but we had several girls like her in my sorority and I applaud the show not stereotyping the sorority.
Peter & Emma
Peter saves Emma from an on-coming bus and in doing so absorbs her power. So he can see sounds as colors, which I agree with our commenters: what kind of "power" is that? Big whoop.
At the hospital, Peter discovers that he got the power from Emma and that she's deaf during a children's choir performance of the theme from "Greatest American Hero." Snerk. Peter explains to her about the different abilities and she is naturally skeptical but he asks her if it's really any crazier than seeing sounds as colors and they sit down at a piano and play and watch the colors. It's nice. But he manages to insult her by asking her to have lunch, get her out of the file room, which coincidentally her mother (Nurse Ratched!) was bugging her about earlier.
After running from Peter, Emma goes home and plays her cello angrily enough to make the building shake and her wall break. Meanwhile, Hiro teleports into Peter's apartment and promptly faints.
Nathan/Sylar
Sylar crawls out of his grave and finds this fight just doesn't mean a thing, he ain't got that swing. No, just kidding. He crawls out and can't remember who he is, so who's he gonna call? Ghostbusters. Sylar seems to have completely forgotten his past life and is almost experiencing all sensations for the first time.
The cop and a doctor work with his dissociative amnesia to try to bring back his former self but all he can focus on is the ticking of the wall clock and the doctor's watch. When his prints come back as having killed his mother, Sylar is horrified and can't remember a thing.. When Winston the cop gets physical with him, Sylar accidentally sends him crashing through the one-way mirror and escapes.
He tracks down the doctor in the parking lot and asks for her help. He then basically forces her to drive him away but she insists he turn himself in, which he does but the police pump him full of lead anyway. He and the doctor tumble down a hill, the doctor sees him heal and tells him to run for it. Where does he run? TO THE KARN EVIL!
Karn Evil
Samuel vows to "complete their circle" and says he has planted many seeds but they have to wait and see who shows up. So who shows up? Rebecca, the rush chair of Claire's new sorority. Turns out she can become invisible and that's what made all the objects fly around... including ANNIE out the window. Nice, show. Who else shows up? Sylar. Exxxxxcellent.
Thoughts & Tidbits
- I totally didn't see sorority girl as a new evil hero. Gretchen has been such great misdirection by the show that I was actually sucked totally in and loved the reveal of Rebecca.
- Really strong episode, I thought. Even though Eeeeeevil Sylar having amnesia could be a really bad place to go, I will reserve judgment until I see what Zachary Quinto can do with it.

Sounds like a good episode... if I could start watching again with out having to watch last season I totally would. It sucked and I stopped watching in the fall... does it matter or I can I just start watching again?
Only thing you need to know, they made Sylar: Nathan. So Sylar thought he was Nathan for a while and now Sylar has finally emerged. This season has been absolutely fantastic so far.
If you haven't watched the 3rd season, don't. This one is all you need from season 2 and maybe the finale of season 3.
I love what they're doing with this season. In fact, I figured out that Emma's power, if she concentrates hard enough could allow her to see where the sound emanates almost making her have sonar. The attack thing was interesting... I felt like it was a bit forced to make her power look interesting, but good.
Only bad part I've seen was the Claire, Gretchen kiss. Homosexuality is a part of this planet for certain and could be a part of the universe. Which means that it is a living condition for people and it is not right or wrong, but natural. It felt forced by the writers, but from the actress who plays Gretchen... very natural. I loved her work on Californication so I have no qualms with her. She has the range and I've enjoyed it. Hope this continues.
I think the thing I hate the most is the gaying of a hetro character, especially one who is very much so both in previous episodes and in their fan base, big turn off. Gay? fine. Openly gay or bi or coming out of the closet being part of the story? Fine. Making a long time straight character gay for ratings (Grey's An, this, etc), irritating. Hope she politely turns down Gretch, becomes friends and they let that go. She suddenly discovers she is gay, I think it ends the show for me. I'd be equally irritated with hetroing a gay person for ratings. It is just such a drastic, dumb way to trash a persona and lessens the plight of gays by fostering the perception people have the ability to just to turn one way or the other. It also lessens the past relationships they had while straight. Very irritating. Just what this show needs, to lose another viewer.
Don't know what KC is talking about, as he or she is reading more into matters than can reasonably be derived from what has been seen thus far.
As to the Veronica Mars' alum, now that was a plot twist! See the difference?
Also, Sylar's prints did not kill his mother! Rewrite....
Very good episode! Where they are taking the characters is actually INTERESTING for a change. (See Seasons 2 & 3) Now, I could do without the obligatory every-girl-has-a-lesbian-experience-in-college storyline that Hollywood seems to think is the norm, but that has yet to flesh out, so we'll see.
I actually got excited when Sylar's run in the woods ended at the Karn Evil. Good on you, Heroes! It made me sit up off the couch. Nice surprise.
I also liked the Rebecca revisit to show how Samuel had been maneuvering Claire all along. It's like they've got real writers and a plan again. Yay!
For the first time in a long time I am actually psyched to see next week's episode. Awesome. Keeping hope alive has paid off. Woo Hoo! =)
Nice "Once More With Feeling" shout out in your recap.
I thought this was a great episode!!!!! Rebecca's 'flashbacks' wow......the GREAT plot twist as I know ALL of us thought Gretchen had something to do with Claire's roommates 'suicide' as well as the flagpole. I thought at that moment Gretchen wanted to 'out' Claire. I can't wait until next week. I wondering if the healer from the Karn Evil will heal Hiro in future episodes.
Loved It!!! Heroes is just getting better and better this season!!!
I found myself singing the greatest american hero theme song but didn't remember what show it was from so thanks!
This really was a great episode. I also was totally shocked...in a good way...at the evil girl reveal. Never expected that, and loved how they tied it back to the murder, the book falling, and the flag falling. Good job writers.
