'Fringe': Crystallized people bombs

fringe.jpgLast Thursday on "Fringe," we had Iraq vets exploding and more bowling alley antics.

I apologize for the tardiness of this recap (for all 10 of you who will read it now that it's so late). Some cross-country move car trouble prevented me from seeing the episode on Thursday night, but as Cheech says in Ghostbusters II, "Better late than never."

Mystery of the Week
This week the mystery involves human bombs. There are Iraq veterans who were exposed to cyanogen chloride and the treatment to combat this neurotoxin was to inject themselves with a crystallizing serum. Except the serum can be made to explode via radio waves. So an eeeeevil Colonel sends these vets on suicide bomb missions and uses the radio frequency 331.6 to blow them up.

Our intrepid team figures it out and manages to save the second unbeknownst suicide-bomber from exploding, but the audience finds out right at the end that the briefcases the bomb targets were carrying contain data and photographs and one of the photos is of Walter Bishop. DUN DUN DUN. Apparently, there is a war coming and we don't know who the other side is but what they want is to exterminate us.

Olivia & Sam Weiss
Olivia goes to see Sam Weiss several more times. Apparently he helped Nina Sharp dip a french fry in ketchup, which is a lot harder than it sounds when you're sporting a robotic arm. He helps Olivia tie her shoes, he needles her, he eggs her on and when she finally gets fed up with his runaround, she stalks over to him and cocks her gun with nary an arm/hand tremble nor the use of her cane. Nobody effs with the Sam Weiss and Olivia abides.

Thoughts & Tidbits
  • Sam Weiss predicts that Olivia will get headaches, which she does. He says this is her brain waking up and that her memory is returning, which is very exciting.

  • Are we to assume this coming "war" is between the dimensions, rather than an alien race wanting to exterminate humans? That was what I took from it, that the "they" means people from another dimension wanting to exterminate "us" in this dimension.

  • No Kirk Acevedo this week. He was such a big part of the premiere but has been quite a let-down since then.

  • This episode was 100x better than the Tremors episode preceding it.

  • Peter: I need my own bedroom. I woke up this morning to him singing an aria from Pagliacci.
    Astrid
: Your father has a wonderful voice.
Peter: Not when he's doing jumping jacks. And did I mention he was naked?
Walter: A good morning sets the tone for the day.

Thankyou for posting a recap of the episode! As you say, better late than never. I was beginning to worry that Fringe was going to go the way of shows not getting the luxury of a recap.

It was much better than last weeks episode, for sure, but I've still been rather disappointed with this young season. According to Abrams and company, they've found their stride this year and 'know who they are now.' If the first three episodes are any indication, I'd say that the move from NY to Vancouver really screwed them up. However, I'm not giving up just yet! Here's hoping they find the stride that they were able to do in the latter half of last season.

No mention of the guy looking at Walter's photo being The Observer? Biggest thing I took away from this episode.

Love everything about this show. Have this ep DVRd. Did Nimoy show up?

Just wanted to let you know I was one of them peeps that read your review :) Just one of the benefits of getting the reviews via RSS.

And yes this episode was much better. And this year's eps are much better and were getting better as the series went along last year.

Oh and no mention of Olivia and Peter going to Iraq and Peter's refusal to talk about his past of only looking out for himself? I suspect that his past will cause some issue in the future. But from what I got from it is that suddenly he cares about others showing just how much he has changed over the last year.

And feariam - they moved to Vancouver? Really? Oh I hadn't noticed, I shall have to keep an eye out for local landmarks(I live in Vancouver) from now on.

So much better than last week's ep! Loved the whole exchange between Walter, Peter and the COW! (moooo!)
Seeing Stephen McHattie as the eeeeeeevil Colonel was neat. I swear, that guy's in EVERYTHING! And while perusing his resume on imdb, I stumbled upon Happy Town, Amy Acker's new show. I hope that show gets aired b/c I love her!
(man, I totally went off topic, there, didn't I?)
Anywho! Still love your recaps, Andrea, even if they are a bit tardy. :)

Thanks you for re-capping even if it's late. I was upset last week that the Fringe re-cap might be a thing of the past.
Wasn't Kirk Acevedo in the last part of the episode? maybe I'm thinking last week or the week before....I'm totally screwed up with the week lag.
I loved Olivia and peter's interactions in Iraq. Peter's got a past to tell us about. I can't wait to hear more about it. Last season they hinted that Peter was from the other dimension, stolen, in fact by Walter who had lost him in his own dimension. This coming war should play out fabulously.

in another universe this review was early

"Nobody effs with the Sam Weiss and Olivia abides." -- Dude, best line in the review!

I'm one of your 10 recap readers!! And I didn't watch this till last night, so I'm just catching up, too.

I thought her pointing the gun at Sam Weiss was out of character. I understand the frustration but it had not reached a level where she pointed and threatened a gun at a non-villian. Her training and professionalism just was thrown out the window. The one fascinating character aspect and inner turmoil is that SHE has to be the one in charge, she trusts no one, she must know and must be the voice who make the decisions. It just wasn't there for that scene and for that character.

Is or was Anna Torv pregnant? She looks bigger than in season 1, and I think I read something like that somewhere. Nothing wrong with that, just wondering.
