'Brothers & Sisters': Kitty has cancer
Tonight on "Brothers & Sisters," Kitty breaks the cancer news to her family and Kevin & Scotty decide to have a baby.Kitty
Her scene where she asks Nora to go to the doctor with her is just excellent, Calista Flockhart does a nice job. She doesn't outright cry, but her eyes and cheeks just get wet. And the way Sally Field runs off to get ready to go. Very nice.
At the doctor, Kitty is diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma. She is obviously in shock and has a bittersweet and partially hilarious conversation with Nora about losing her hair and facing the truth. They are great together.
She steels herself to tell Robert and the way he just blows her off... oof. Crying again. That's horrible. She eventually tells him in a fit of anger and he is stunned. They make up the next day and he vows to fight this and win this. She worries that he's only there for her because she has cancer. It's more good work by Calista Flockhart.
Robert
The Governor of California is threatening to release the news that he really had a heart attack last year. He fires back with the fact that she's having an affair. I'm distracted by the fact that the actress is Michele Greene, who starred in two of my favorite made-for-TV movies: "I Posed for Playboy" and "She Woke up Pregnant." Excellent.
Meanwhile, after the governor leaks the heart attack story, Robert says no about the affair news, but Kevin goes behind his back and gives it to the press.
Justin & Rebecca & Ryan
Ryan and Rebecca are competing at work to solve a glut of wine problem. Ryan's proposal is to break even, Rebecca's proposal is to ferment "inexpensive wine" and sell it. When Ryan's proposal is denied, he gives it to a competitor. They try to make it look semi-innocent but it's not. Ryan knows he was being a shady punk.
Kevin & Scotty
They make a leap of faith to have a child. Kevin assures Scotty they he won't be an absent father and he'll try so hard to make this work. Hmmmm. So it's baby time for my favorite B&S couple! YAY!
Nora & Saul
At the very end of the episode, Nora tells Saul about Kitty. Another excellent scene, oh the waterworks. That's why we all love Sally Field.
Thoughts & Tidbits
- I thought Calista Flockhart, Rob Lowe and Sally Field all were excellent this episode. The ending monologue by Rob Lowe juxtaposed with Kitty's doctor visit was excellent.
- I was totally bored by Ryan, Rebecca and Justin but am intrigued to see where this Ryan giving company secrets out goes
- Kevin: All I'm saying is you're great with kids.
Scott: Well that's because I live with one.

Thanks for sharing this information.
I find it very interesting both heading are very cool and excellent.
I think it sucks that you would put spoilers in your headings!! Jeez!!
Did I miss something? I don't think K&S have decided one way or the other. Scotty merely wanted to make sure they were on the same page when they did make that leap. Nothing in his comments implied to me he was now on board with having a kid.
Ryan is a pointless character and should not be wasting any more screen time.
WHAT IS GOING ON??
-Did I miss something? Was the car crash at the end of last episode even mentioned??
-I may remember this wrong- but I though Ryan packed up and left at the end of last season?
-Holly's rant about her missing file was unconvincing and came out of nowhere.
I love this show- but these first two episodes have seemed scattered and disconnected. It feels like there is a new writer or director or something that quite can't fit the pieces together as usual. Thoughts anyone?
ALSO
-I too did not see that Scotty and Keven decided to have a baby? I thought they were still just discussing it. On this note, the show has to be very careful to get 'preachy' with gay rights. They have depicted the couple with great normalcy so far, but when Saul came out in the second season I heard many people complain that the show was starting to seem if it had an agenda- the show should strive for entertainment and not political ideals from a producer or network. ABC should protect this show (as it is one of the few with gay characters depicted in such a positive manner) from being the center of a heated debate.
Love Sally Field and Calista Flockhart scenes together.
To Ryan,
the car accident from last episode never happened. They swerved just in time.
Can't stand the Ryan character. Please make him go away. All he does is cause trouble and they gave him a % in the family business. How stupid. However, is it just me or wasn't what he handed to the man in the diner, a copy of the list of clients that Rebecca had assembled. I thought that was the reason that Holly couldn't find it because Ryan took it, made copies and then hid it in a pile on her desk. It could have been his proposal that he handed over however everything they said made me think that it was Rebecca's proposal with names that he handed over. Anyone else think that?
Also, I never got the impression that the baby issue between Kevin and Scotty was settled. I think you are mistaken there.
Ryan has mostly been a pain in the butt since he came on the show. He seems to be out to get any Walker at anytime. Somebody needs to kick his butt back to his other DAD and quit giving him another chance. He's a rotten kid.
I kind of agree that B&S is a little bit disjointed so far this season. There's some really good work being done but I'm having a hard time putting my finger on why some things aren't clicking with me.
I think it has to do with a kind of phoniness I'm feeling with some plots. Like the Justin/Rebecca scene where he's trying to study and she's making noise and needs work to do. And also the sudden winery problems and Rebecca and Ryan's instantaneous solutions to them. Also Holly's missing report (that there's no other copy of... Really?) did come out of nowhere and was clearly just a set up to show 'wicked' Ryan. So basically, it's the Rebecca/Holly/Justin/Ryan stuff that's not working - it all seems to be telegraphed a mile away...
And with no Sarah (and no Tommy), things are little anemic story wise on B&S.
And even though I'm really enjoying Kitty, Robert and Nora, I have to say I kinda hate illness plots because I really doubt the show is killing off this character. The last time I wondered about the fate of a sick character was with Izzie on Grey's Anatomy. And that was solely because the behind the scenes shenanigans of Katherine Heigl made it a very valid question of whether she would be continuing with the show.
I love Kevin and Scotty together - yeah sorry, Scotty did *not* commit to having a kid - they aren't just the best couple; they are two of the most interesting characters on the show to me.
Because Scotty is a secondary character, the show is still revealing things about him and Kevin is very multi-faceted. Lovable one minute and despicable the next. Funny then annoying...
I still adore this show and I know they'll get all the plots cooking soon (maybe not Ryan's because he's a waste of space).
And this may sound kind of bitchy, but all the recaps seem to get shorter and shorter. And since there are so few on the site now anyway, I'm starting to wonder if Zap2it should just stop doing them altogether...
I just watched this episode again on Hulu--or at least the Ryan scene in the diner and the Holly" I can't find the proposal scenes and again--all indications are that the information Ryan handed to the man were copies of Rebecca's report with client names, account numbers, and financial reports. It is never stated that he is handing over his proposal. JUst a friendly criticism--when summarizing an episode, please be factual as this summary is very misleading when it comes to the Ryan-Holly-Rebecca thread. Just my two cents--well in this economy-1 cent.
