'NCIS' premiere: Ziva lives or dies?

It has been a long time since the "NCIS" finale last spring, and my one hope was that poor Ziva hadn't had to remain a hostage that whole time (there was no way she was going to be dead). Well, we didn't find out about that immediately. No, instead of being given an instant answer about Ziva, we learned that DiNozzo was being held captive in Somalia.

Some may say it wrong, but I can't fault DiNozzo for telling Saleem about the team - he had, after all, been given truth serum. Of course, what makes the show great is that even with truth serum DiNozzo was still able to be a wiseass.

How did you take the bit where DiNozzo told Saleem he was doing everything he was doing for "vengeance?" I was putting my money on "love." Do you think it was vengeance due to love or that all the implications we got at the end of last season were a load of hooey? The way he was in that haze later in the episode - after they learned about the Damocles going down - to me, spoke of love.

What concerned me tonight though, was the plausibility that the guys figured Ziva was angry enough at them that she had been refusing to talk to them for months on end. I understand why she would have been angry at Gibbs and DiNozzo, but what about McGee and Abby? Surely if those two had dropped her an e-mail she would have responded had she been able. Maybe not. All I know is that I wish we'd gotten more earlier on their explanation for Ziva's silence. I'm just surprised that they all took so long to work out that she was in trouble, or at least to talk about it.

Caf-Pow. The whole thing hinged on Saleem wanting his Caf-Pow, if not for that, they may never have found Ziva alive. The devil, god, someone - in this case Ziva - is always in the details. I would, however, like to learn the details of exactly what happened to the ship. I know - not strictly relevant - I'm just curious.

Speaking of my being curious, while it's great that they went back to the office at the end of the episode for their round of applause, why didn't they clean up a little bit better first? McGee was still wearing a shirt with rip in it during that final scene. But, that's a quibble, the real question I'm left with at the end of the episode is whether Ziva is already officially a part of the team again or if we have to wait till next week for that to happen.

As a side note, I love the interview bit tonight with Claire Connell. McGee and DiNozzo had a bunch of worthless questions after which they passed her on to Gibbs... who made her cry. What were thinking with that "job interview?" Do you think they just had to pass her along because there would have been a lawsuit about they way they were asking the questions otherwise? Becca Hastings however, even if she didn't cry, was definitely not the right fit - I'm happy she disappeared as quickly as she did. Heather Kincaid would have been fine, but she still wasn't Ziva.

Bits and pieces:

  • You know, I think DiNozzo's essence might just be in his voice.
  • Quite honestly, I thought about the "True Lies" truth serum thing too as soon as we were told about the injection. Great scene, both here and in the movie.
  • How did the episode go so long tonight without bringing in Abby - I love all the characters on the show, but Abby most of all.
  • The goat song. Nice. Funny stuff.

I enjoyed the episode until the last scene. It was as though they'd been in a play and came out to take their curtain calls in their costumes and makeup (including a round of applause). Surely there would have been medical treatment, fresh clothing, and a flight taking 20+ hours. Really jarring.

Other than that, good episode.

agree with maureen

really loved the gibbs snipe part

or the scene where gibbs takes out the terrorist and is shown to be a great distance away but then somehow manages to show up to save them from the other terrorist in the hallway...

NCIS, oh how I missed thou! A perfect mix of drama, action, and comedy with a dabble of romance. Loved the episode, I just wish NCIS was two hours every week not just one.

I agree with Josh that someone doesn't go on a big vengeance thing like that unless one really cares for the person that died, but it need not be love in a romantic sense.

That was some shot by Gibbs, well both of them were. But how did they get the timing down so well? It's a show, I know but seems a bit far-fetched. As for Gibbs getting their so fast, they most likely had jeeps etc on standby waiting for his word to move in. And they didn't show how long it took to get out of their bindings, pick up Ziva etc, just bits and pieces.

And I thought that weird too that they were still wearing the same clothes as they were wearing in the Sahara back at the office and still all dirty.

And what's up Tony's formal looking white shirt and dark/shiny suit jacket? Don't have any footage from last year but seems more formal than his usual wear.

And YAY, Ziva is back and as hot/cute as ever! I was kinda worried watching the finale last year until they showed the last little blurb with Ziva being interrogated.

Oh and thanks for not putting any spoilers in the title! Cause I had accidentally clicked on the wrong folder in my RSS reader before watching the show.

Just sighing from happiness, my old friend NCIS is back. Been filling in the time with reruns. I know the ending was a little unnatural, but I still got a little misty-eyed.

Loved it! Missed it all summer! Hope they keep Tony and Ziva as just friends/coworkers...I like the back-and-forth it gives to the dialoge.

Dunno'....sort of corny ending when Gibbs magically appears after being a great distance away. Guess that is why it is fiction....

Ziva and Tony must never, never get together. I agree Tony's actions were based on love - but it is love that will never and can never be fulfilled. Part of NCIS' greatness is not that it is a good drama, it is a well told tragedy. These are tragic figures, doomed like Samuel Beckett characters. Only one of them has ever escaped and that is Mike Franks. He knew the truth and it scared him, and he knew it was time ago, because in that life on that show: no gets out alive. Part of why the chemistry works for the characters is that they are alike, the share the same fate. Their salvation is not body counts in bad guys - it's leaving while they have the option. Some of them can't or won't leave because they cannot imagine what it would be like without that darkness as part of their life.

Well, NCIS is at a naval yard, on an actual military base. It's not like they drove over to Norfolk International and took American Airlines into Somalia. They would've taken military transport. Those bad boys only land on military bases. Which would be why they came to the office first. It was on their way and Ziva prob needed to be immediately debriefed.
I thought ep was great! Ziva looked so broken, tho. :( Hopefully she can get back to her normal self and then kick the ass of whoever got her captured!

I thought this was an absolutely fantastic episode. Tony's ability to remain a lovable pain in the ass, no matter the situation, continues to be my favorite part of this show.

I really enjoyed the repartee between he and Ziva's character. The most heartbreaking moment, for me, were Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo's facial expressions upon seeing one another. The combination of elation on Tony's part and horror on Ziva's was perfect. A wonderful job done by two wonderful actors.

I, personally, love the prospect of Tony/Ziva relationship. There has to be some romance on a show and it makes sense to have two of its characters hook up. A relationship like that doesn't have to be in your face as a viewer, and if handled correctly it adds something to the show.

On another note, I thought the similarity between Gibbs and Tony in this episode was striking. They even went so far as to have them say nearly the exact same words at the exact same time, all while being in separate rooms speaking to different people. Bravo, writers.
