'Fringe': Tremors in Pennsylvania
Tonight on "Fringe," the monster is under the galdarn ground. Shame they couldn't get Kevin Bacon to cameo.Mystery of the Week
The MO of this week's creepy crawlie reminds me quite a bit of the Grabvoids that terrorized Val, Earl and Reba in Perfection, Oklahoma. Suck people under the ground and eat them. It turns out that a local doctor's wife couldn't carry a child to term because of her severe lupus (dammit Otto, you have LUPUS!). So the doctor decided to inject their fetus with scorpion DNA. As one does. Fast forward 17 years. Scorpion Boy is all grown up and sucking people into the ground so he can eat them.
Earl: Is this a job for an intelligent man?
Val: Well, show me one and I'll ask him.
In swoops our intrepid team. They suss out the mystery and Peter and Olivia end up battling Scorpion Boy in the tunnels where it lives. Olivia is bitten but it does not seem to have any lasting effects. Speaking of Olivia...
Val: You will have long blonde hair, big green eyes, world class breasts, ass that won't quit and legs that go all the way up.
Olivia's Trip
What DID seem to have some lasting effects on Olivia is her little trip to "the other side." She has come back hyper-sensitive, hearing far-off conversations and the buzzing off flies and what not.She still can't remember anything, though, much to the consternation of Charlie.
Earl: No way those things can outrun these horses!
Val: Yeah, well, for all you know, they can fly.
The Shapeshifter/Charlie
Kirk Acevedo gets to really exercise his Eeeeeeevil Looks muscle this week, as he spends what little screentime he has glaring menacingly. He DOES talk to the Other Side via the very cool typewriter that I meant to mention last week and forgot about. Olivia is still the target, she can't remember, she trusts him, he is instructed to HELP her remember and we are left to wonder what kind of eeeeeeeevil things that entails next week.
Odds & Ends
- Agent Jessup was back for like two seconds but she did find a Bible. Last week she was connecting cases to Bible verses. Is she going to be the resident religion tie-in expert? I think so.
- Peter uses his new power from handing the shapeshifter device to the government to commandeer himself a plane. It's kind of a throwaway scene, so hopefully we'll revisit that later.
- Olivia almost shoots Peter in the Hughes house. Is she just jumpy? Or is it some leftover effects from the dimension-jump?
- Nina Sharp sent Olivia to Sam the Bowling Alley man for help in her recovery from her trip to the other world. Just what kind of help? We don't know yet. I hope it's addressed next week because I'm intrigued.
- The local sheriff's fishing lures remind Peter of how much he used to like fishing and how he always wanted to take his dad, so at the end of the episode he invites Walter to go fishing with him. It's a very sweet scene.
- Earl: Damn it, listen to me. I'm older and wiser.
Val: Yeah, well you're half right.

I really like take charge Peter. The end scene with Peter wanting to go fishing with Walter was sweet. Also thought it was interesting Walter mentioning a son's grave but the son isn't in it. A nice parellel to Walter's own life.
If they're gonna replace Kirk Acevedo, at least make the character relevant. They already have one other character that needs more screen time in Astrid, don't add another one.
That being said, very good episode.
I love Tremors, but if you want to refrence a being that sucks people underground and then eats them you might want to look at "The Burrows"--of course its not as good as Tremors and doesn't have Earl and Val!
Yes as soon as saw the ominous looking field and the ground moving, it was a flashback to the good old grabboids.
And I agree they need to give more screen time to that new very delicious looking FBI agent.
Anybody else wonder why Peter needs a C-130 transport plane? Wonder what is so big as to need a C-130.
And why doesn't Peter get some real credentials so he can carry a gun too! I mean if they are always being thrust into these dangerous situations he should be armed with something, even if just a taser or a bean-bag gun.
So far this season is shaping up to better than its first season. Let's hope they keep it up!
hahahaha! Ok, that was one of the funniest recaps in recent memory! I love Tremors!
Hell, I think I liked the recap better than the ep. The ep was kinda "eh" for me. First off, haven't we seen a creature, who lives underground and paralyzes their victims and devors them done already? The X-Files and Buffy The Vampire Slayer both worked those themes over, not to mention plenty of movies, I'm sure.
I did like seeing Uncle Eddie from Grounded for Life in there as Sam Weiss!
Still love Fringe, but this ep didn't "grab me". :)
Anyone else notice how many times they went back and forth between Boston and PA like they were 10 minutes apart? Not to get hung up on transport realism (that's what 24 is for) but c'mon.
Nice recap. While I loved the "tremors" references, I felt a little short-changed on discussion. What about Olivia almost shooting Peter? The ninja-sword reference? Nina's interactions with Olivia? Astrid and the flying frog? I realize that you're hitting the highlights and I do appreciate the humor, but this feels a little abrupt.
Overall another great episode. Like someone else mentioned, I really like Peter's take charge attitude this season, and the fact that he's spending more time in the field than in the lab. If I have one complaint, its that we didn't see Peter approach Olivia about firing her gun on him. You know he saw her shaking hand in the hospital too. So far this season they've done a better job with these two, but I'd still like to see a better relationship develop between them (not necessarily romantic, but at least one where they rely on each other more than they do now).
You know, I was going to wait to discuss Peter wanting that plane and Nina sending Olivia to see Sam the Bowling Alley guy until we had more information, but you're right, I should've at least mentioned them. Recap amended.
Not to nit pick but Termors was set in Perfection,Nevada.
