'The Secret Life of the American Teenager': Secrets and lies and foolishness

Shailenewoodley"The Secret Life of the American Teenager" has more secrets running around than you can shake a stick at, and they don't all revolve around the American teenager. At some point they're going to need to start issuing a scorecard and program with the show. It's just great, isn't it?

I can't imagine what world Amy lives in that she really thinks that she can go to Italy. That whole thing about "exposing" John to other cultures almost sounded like she believed... almost. Plus, Ricky was right, Amy can't take John out of the country without Ricky's permission. She could lie to Passport Control and say that Ben was the father, and that seems like the kind of thing she would do, but breaking a federal law like that may be a worse idea than her quitting her daycare job to go to Italy. And that, friends, is a terrible idea.

I think though that I'm beginning to understand where Anne is coming from a little bit more when she tries to do things like get Amy to make her eggs. Anne definitely comes across a little harsh and whiny from time to time, but it seems as though she's just doing it to make Amy hear what she, Amy, sounds like. Or, it could be that Anne's just as irresponsible as Ricky's foster mom thinks she is.

Ummm... I don't know how to ask this, but is Betty still a "woman of the night?" Does she still work in the "oldest profession?" Is she still "sleeping with men who leave cash on the nightstand and who tip her based on her performance in that piece of furniture that generally sits next to the nightstand?" I'm only asking because when Ben asked Betty about her arrival time in court she flubbed the answer and then there was that conversation later with Tom. Obviously she's not a court reporter, but that doesn't necessarily mean that she's still getting paid to do what they can teach you all about in Bologna. Can you imagine what the conversation between Leo and Ben is going to be once Ben finds out about Betty's job (whether it's current or not)?

Ricky. He wants to be legally emancipated and thinks that his being a 16-year-old father shows that he's all grown up? Call me kooky, but it's kind of odd to use teenage pregnancy as an explanation of just how responsible you are. Yes, it's great that he's trying to work more over the summer and Leo's getting him an apartment is nice (especially such a huge place), but that doesn't mean that he ought to be emancipated.

Why did Grace tell everyone that George lied about the vasectomy? George helped her when she was feeling horrific, gave her a shoulder to cry on, and that's how she repays him? That girl is going to completely mess up my plans for George and Anne getting back together, and that's not the sort of thing I can accept. I don't know what I'm going to do about it, but it's not going to be pretty.

Ben telling Amy about the vasectomy was wholly predictable, as was -- sadly -- the fact that he'd do it in awkward, horrible fashion. Far less predictable was the fact that Ashley would back her father's vasectomy lie to Amy. There's going to be a reckoning in that household awfully soon.

Odds and ends:

  • I love that Alice and Henry both agreed that Henry should go to Bologna to get "trained." You know you loved it too. Those two are still my favorite characters (save Reverend Stone) on the show.
  • What is up with Adrian's need for the house next to Amy so that she can be with Ricky? Holy mackerel, that girl has a one track mind and it's definitely on the wrong track.
  • I can't even touch on the idiocy of David's idea of ditching Amy and John and moving out of town. Idiocy. Complete idiocy.

I agree with all of your points. The show was great the first season. Both Amy and Anne had my sympathy, and I loved the comedic interaction between George and Ashley. Ben was the knight in shining armor. And Ricky was the one we all hoped would mature.

This season, Amy really gets on my nerves. I think she whines way too much and is utterly selfish in more than one way. Thus far this season, I'm pretty every scene with her in it has focused on her being angry or self-centered. Not fun to watch.

Anne is too confused to do anything. The Ashley-George combo has lost its timing and punch. Ben has no chutzpah.

The development of the Ricky character has been the most rewarding aspect of the show this season. He puts the other characters to shame.

I love Ricky this season! When ben's dad gave him the apartment & he started tearing up Loved it.Am i the only one that thought that was hot? lol. Im confused about Amy. Didnt in one eposide she said she didnt want to take John to the movies (or some place) because she wanted to wait to he was three months old because he would be able to fight germs better? But yet she wants to talk him out of the country! What is she thinking? I get her still be a teen & wanting to have fun but come on girl that is not going to happen! And why did they make Anne pregnant this season? I know Molly Ringward was (congrats on her twins!) but i wonder how that is going to play out for the rest of the season. How can David expect her to leave her family & just move away with him? Her daughter just had a baby. Yea she has George but im sure she wants her mom too. Cant wait to see how this all works out.

Amy is way, way , annoying! I was hoping that they would use Amy's child as a wy to show that even with help having a kid in high school is a very bad idea. Amy doesn't want to take John to Italy, but they made it clear a few episodes ago that she wasn't going to leave him. I hope they do something to make Amy grow up and quit being such a whinny *****!

amy and ricky were just meant for eachother.

a. he will help her through and her personality woulod improve (i hope)

b. dun like adrian that much (too dramatic or whatever)

c. made for one another!!!

I support Ricky in his want to move out simply for the fact that he would like privacy and a place to bring his son. It is HIS son as well as Amy's. Amy needs to learn that John's needs come before her wants, and John does not need to go to Italy. He needs to have financial stability from his parents and if she quits her daycare job, then that goes out the window. And I have to say, Ben needs to grow a pair. He needs to stand up to Amy and say "I want to go on my own, it's only for 2 months." And where does Amy get off saying that Ben will take care of her and John's ticket to Italy and where they are going to live? Shouldn't that be her responsibility since Ben's father has been making him work to show Ben that not everything is just handed to him? Come on Ben! I love the Ricky character this season, especially now we have the background and drama of his father left behind in the last season. Adrian and Ricky are good for each other if they commit to one another, however it can never be a successful relationship. They are both to focused on sex and mind games.

OMG i am fed up with ben and amy together i couldnt stand it in the begging and i really just want amy and ricky together i mean come one just think amy ricky and their son john....How cute!!!!

i love ricky in the seasons since john has been born! he has really grown up and maned up! i think he is being very responsible and being a great father! amy has grown up alot as well in some ways! i see where she comes from on alot of things since i became a mother at 18 and im now 21. she has stepped up as a mother but she still yerns for a normal life! just because you have a child at an early age doesnt mean your life stops it jus means things just go in a different direction! you can still have your life and do things. you just cant take off and do as you please with out any worries! you have a responability! she will learn as the years go by! as for adrian, she should have known better than to have sex without a condom exp for revenge! she has made her bed now she has to lye in it! she will grow up more in time as well! ben needs to man up period! hes being dumb and irresponisble! i love the show but is every season going to start and end with someone getting pregnant and giving birth????? is any one ever going to learn from each others mistakes and the others around them???? no pregnancies at all before amy's and now its happening to everyone! im really starting to think somethings in the water theyre all drinking lol but if the pattern continues who is next???? jack jus moved in with grace so will a reconsiliation be in the future? will they have a baby??? or will ashley be hard headed and give in will she be next to complete the jergin family pregnancys???? who knows on the seasons to come will tell!
