'Harper's Island': Splash
Tonight's episode of "Harper's Island" is a total bloodbath. And should've been titled "Sniffle," as far as I'm concerned.
I'm getting awfully sick of the editing/time on this show. One shot Trish is leaving the Sheriff's house, the next she's finding Henry in the church graveyard. One minute it's night time at the church, next minute it's day time. Good grief.
London Bridge (summary)
Wakefield goes on a rampage. Other than some suspicious Jimmy stuff, it's pretty much just a Wakefield killing spree. They return to the tunnels, there's a creepy bridge and it's all very emotional. Oh, and the sailboat is gone and nobody on the mainland is going to realize they haven't heard from anyone on the island for awhile, though you'd think all the people who left on the boat (when Madison was kidnapped) would, like, alert someone.
Under the Bridge (key players tonight)
Wakefield is the killer, which we basically already knew. There was always the chance it was some kind of "trying to stop the killings" twist and it wasn't Wakefield, but tonight's episode dispelled that theory. Also, turns out Wakefield is Madison's "new friend." He even helped her pick flowers. Creepy.
Take it to the Bridge (who died)
Nikki (meh), Shane (awww), and Cal & Chloe (sob).
Bridge Over Troubled Water (how they died)
Nikki, Shane and Cal were all stabbed with Wakefield's big ol' knife thingy. Chloe goes all Juliet and jumps off the bridge after her man. Now, there is a chance that Chloe survived the fall, but I doubt it.
As soon as Cal asked Chloe to marry him, I figured they were toast and I cried for the next couple minutes. However, why on EARTH did they run across the bridge when Cal knew the gate was locked? They could've run right past it and into the woods. Sure, Wakefield probably would've caught them but it's not certain death like the bridge. I mean, maybe that stupid move gives us the argument that killing C & C was just weeding out some idiots from the gene pool.
We'll Burn That Bridge (gruesome scale)
It's pretty gruesome, especially Cal. 8 out of 10.
Love Can Build a Bridge (I hope you die next)
I was going to go out on a limb and say Wakefield, but I've changed my mind. I know it'll never happen, but I hope Wakefield gets ahold of that little lying brat Madison and effs her up. I don't care if she's a little girl. Slice n dice. When her mom was reassuring her that it's not her fault if Abby dies, I snorted, "Yes it is, you lying little liar."
I have to say, Shane totally redeemed himself this episode. I actually cried a little over the way he sacrificed himself so the girls could escape. It was very brave.
59th Street Bridge Song (favorite lines)
Cal: I just wanna get Chloe off this island.
Sully: I just wanna get Chloe.
Trish: Abby, I'm so sorry about your dad. I was so wrong.
Abby: It's okay. I was too.
Chloe: You can't have me.
Water Under the Bridge (best scare)
When Danny leaned towards the door with the shotgun holes in it, I had to cover my eyes because I was just sure he was going to get the big ol' knife thingy to the face. It was also totally creepy when Wakefield leaned on the bridge rail and looked at Abby and Henry at the end.
Across the Bridge Where Angels Dwell (lead suspects)
Well, I think the Jimmy thing could go either way. I don't trust these writers like I do for, say, Battlestar Galactica or Veronica Mars or Lost, which means the Jimmy stuff could be exactly what it seems and he's helping Wakefield, or it could all be a red herring to set us up for a big twist in the finale. I think it's pretty obvious, though, that Wakefield has help.
Bridge Scene (weekly death roster)
Cousin Ben: this was no boating accident
Uncle Marty: bridge to tear-in-halfia
Reverend Fain: someone should've given him a heads up
Kelly Seaver: you hang in there, buddy
Lucy Daramour: what a little firecracker!
Hunter Jennings: he lost the face-off
Joel Booth: he's got a leg up
Thomas Wellington: what a splitting headache
Richard Allen: you give love a bad name
Malcolm Ross: that money is burning a hole in his pocket
Deputy: nice red shirt you have on
Radio: on the fritz
Cole Harkin: I suspect Geena Davis
JD Dunn: if you hang up on me, I'll gut you like a fish
Beth Barrington: tunnel vision
Katherine Wellington: does the gardener have an alibi?
Male Cop: I pirefer "murder of crows" myself
Female Cop: not too excited to investigate anymore, are ya?
Maggie: this has nothing to do with m--snap
Sheriff Mills: all the theories about him as killer flew right out the window
Nikki: now you can stop being pointless
Shane: he died a hero's death
Deputy: for whom the bell tolls
Cal: Running Bear loves...
Chloe: Little White Dove
I'm still thinking Abby could be Wakefield's daughter. The way Sheriff Mills said "you're my daughter" was more like "I'm the man who raised you, dammit, I'm your real father" than it was "I'm your biological father."

I say probably the best episode yet...I was on the edge of my seat when Wakefield busted into the bar and started killing and was actually upset about Cal & Chloe ( I never would have thought this show would upset me like that!!) So now that we got one 2 hr finale left...who is everyone thinking is the killer (or acomplice)? I'm still thinking it's Shea...I just gotta feeling about her!
Well, my Cal theory just got shot all to hell. Looking at who's left, it's gotta be Henry. His prior actions(including his unwavering support of Abby, preventing Abby from chasing or shooting Wakefield, etc.) make him prime suspect. Plus, it was his idea to come to the island in the first place. Jimmy is too obvious, none of the women make sense. I'm picking Henry. I hope they explain why all these people got killed, especially characters like Maggie, Nikki, the priest, etc. Just killing them because the killers are "evil" is "Friday the 13th" stupid.
I was interested when I saw it on Netflix to view instantly. I have to say after the first episode and I saw Christopher Gorham in it along with Katie C***idy I was hooked. Went through all ten episodes in two days, and saw last nights episode online. I have two say I got a little misty eyed when Chloe told Wakefield she couldn't have her and fell to the river. I think he's accomplice is Jimmy. People are saying it can't be Jimmy because it is too obvious. I think twist is it the most obvious person. I don't think it's Trish, Abby or Henry. I think Sully is first then Shea last episode.
I really loved this episode. Now that Wakefield's not forced to kill from the shadows they can do these more heroic and/or touching death moments.
I am kind of confused about Wakefield's new MO though. Unless Wakefield is either A) some sort of supernatural Jason Vorhees type guy or B) wanting to be killed, his actions in this episode were awfully foolhardy.
There were at least three or four cases where he could have easily been shot and killed and it was only incompetence on the part of his victims that allowed Wakefield to survive.
Oh, and for my money, Jimmy is innocent (though perhaps still Wakefield's son?) and Henry's the one working with Wakefield.
I am so sorry about my grammar in my last post, was thinking too fast to post, I didn't get to proofread it.
I was so so disappointed to see C&C die :( But he music playing during that scene totally ruined it. Made it really really cheesy. A bit too much. The scene didn't need that music for its dramatic effect.
Oh Jimmy... I hope you're a red heron. Because he's been a main suspect during the whole show, so I expect a "twist" for the finale. I mean...there HAS to be a twist....right?
Thanks, great recap as usual!
I was really impressed with Shane in this episode as well, and couldn't believe Cal and Chloe ran that way on the brige either, but I think she was ahead of Cal and may not have realized they couldn't get through that way; so sad, I loved those characters, they were adorable together.
It's funny when you said you couldn't watch Danny in the kitchen, cause I did the same thing, putting my hands over my face, absolutely sure he was going to get a knife stabbed into his! It's really strange, in that same scene, when Sully had his back to Danny and was talking about changing his life, I thought for sure he was going to whip around and kill Danny, saying he was going to stop killing people or something like that!
I think they're doing that whole time/editing thing so people realize everything isn't happening in a totally linear way.
Since this show is being touted as being similiar to One Little Indian or And Then There Were None, I'm ***uming (and hoping, at this point, given those who are left) that Wakefield's helper is someone who we believed to be dead already. I'm thinking Booth, since he accidently shot himself, unlike the others, and something like that would be fairly easy to set-up, and no one's found his body yet, have they? He'd have a pretty good idea that Malcolm would follow him, or perhaps he even subtly encouraged him to. Do we know for sure that he was buried? It seems more in keeping with Malcolm's character to have grabbed the bag and run away, or perhaps put Booth in a shallow grave he could get out of himself.
I'm really hoping it's not any of the remaining characters, although if this is going to be a typical horror show, we'll have only 2 or three survivors at most. And Jimmy seems so obvious, and Henry being the killer seems obvious as well. I hope the finale proves to be not typical or obvious!
The Cal Chloe relationship has always been a distraction, so it's not a surprise to see them eliminated in essentially the penultimate episode to make room for the real conclusion.
At times it felt like I was watching a bad B movie between all the guns having like 1 shot and missing Chloe and Cal embracing at an incredibly stupid time.
My favorite line was when
somebody said something like "we'll be safe here". Uh huh. So after 25 murders in the last couple days you are convinced that there is a safe place to be. Also sealing off all the tunnel entrances seems fairly useless. He doesn't need them. In any case he walks at Zombie speed and still succeeds.
My money is on Henry being the accomplice just because he's the most "obvious" suspect, and the show took a very unoriginal approach in bringing Wakefield back to life.
Shane didn't stay and protect the girls, he stayed because Jimmy was lying there unconscious. He was a true friend. Sucks that he died, I was really getting to like him.
wakefield's really ****ed about not being invited to the wedding.
he just really had his heart set on being a bridesmaid.
